4. Introduction to reproduction in animals and plants

5. Use of microorganisms in industries

6. Relationship of organisms with one another and with the environment

Most biological studies are built on foundations of five
universally recognized truths.
ACTIVITY 1
Find information about the seven main characteristics of living
organisms and suggest an interesting activity that you can plan to
teach those characteristics to 6th grade students.
Animal Cell
and Plant Cell
Animal Cell
Inside Animal Cells
A B
Look at the image, can you guess
in pairs where each of these are?
A. A place where the cell’s activities are
controlled.
B. A place where chemical reactions
happen.
C. A place where substances can pass
in and out of the cell.
D. A place where energy is released for
the cell.

C D
Sub-Cellular Structure Definitions

nucleus: Controls the activities of the cell. Contains genetic

material (DNA), which is packaged into structures called
chromosomes.
cell membrane: Controls the movement of substances into and
out of the cell.
cytoplasm: A jelly-like substance that fills the cell, where most
chemical reactions happen.
mitochondria: Contains the enzymes needed for aerobic
respiration, which releases energy for the cell.
Take Notes
Make sure these are written down correctly
and check your spelling.
Plant Cell
Sub-Cellular Structure Definitions
chloroplasts: Contain the pigment chlorophyll
which absorbs light to provide energy for
photosynthesis.
cell wall: A rigid structure that helps to strengthen
the cell and provides support for the plant
permanent vacuole: Filled with cell sap to keep
the cell rigid to support the plant.

Take Notes
Make sure these are written down correctly
and check your spelling.
ACTIVITY 2

Prepare 2 tables to list down all the cell organelles which

are visible in a typical animal cell and a plant cell
separately with their functions.
