ASSSMBLIMG TH3 TUVISPORHER

This transfomier is shipped with the intamal body being enclosed and

assembled within the tank filled with nitrogen gas.

Assembly of the intemal body of the transí'shoúld not be carried

out on a rainy day and a aunny day should be selected. Sven on a olear day,

if there is a strong dusty wind, some means should be taken to prevent the

dust sticking to the intemal body. Also, do nct step on the intemal body,

or handle it with dirty han’s. The hands shouli be carefully washed with
*
insulating oil before working. (xReinwater and dust sticking to the trans-

former will contaminate the oil and lower the voltage resistarice of it ;

sticking to the coil, especially, will cause Ínsulation breakdo-.T.),

The number of tools should be counted before working, and thi: nunber

should be check after conpletion of the assembly, in order to certain

that no tool has been left forgotten on the core or core ti^tening metal

of the transformer and these parts assembled together with the tool. Also,

the greatest care should bé taken not to drop the terminal attaching bolts

of the lead wire inte the coil during the assembling process.

As the time during which the intemal body and insulating material

will be left exposed vri.ll also be a problem, before starting assembly of

the intemal body, the various parts, such as the lead wires, lead wire

wooden supports, etc., should be kept in readiness, so that the work will

proceed smoothly as soon as the shipping cover is detached. The exposure

time limit for the intemal body of the transformen and the insulating ma

terial is about 8 hours, and if work time should exceed this limit, work

should be stopped temporarily, and oil inserted.

There is no need to remove the upper tank and to suspend the intemal

body when assembling this transformen.

drain valve while exhausting the shipping gas through a manhole @ or the

filter valve opening as shown in next drawing.

CAUTION - Before removing a manhole cover, shipping píate, or other device,

vent the transfonner to atmospheric pressure. Do not enter the

transformer until the gas space has been replaced with fresh air

or a suitable oxygen supply is available. It is recoromendable

that oxygen content be measured before entering the transfonner

to assure that than 16^ of oxygen content are obtained.

HYCAR CORK

Hycar Cork is a type of material made of gynthetia> rubber

and Cork fragmenta. Since it differa greatly from the conven-
tional varnish treated gaaket material, the following instructioas
should be followed closely in its application.

(1) Storage

Hycar-Cork gasket material should not be stored tightly

ríjlled or folded, for it will become too diatorted for use.
Be sure it is stored in as stress-free c'ondition as possi-
ble.

(2) Application
(a) Use Hycar cement for joining gasket segments.

(b) Paint Hycar cement uniformly on the gasket üide all

surfac© and the gasket rLaapre.
(c) Join the sections 4 to 5 minutes after application of

the cement, when a rubber-like film has formed,

(d) Vith conventional vamish treated oork gasketa, it ia

the usual practico te compresa them to 30-40^ of the

original thickness. It is recommended that flycar-cork
gaekets are oompressed to 5O-’6O% of their original
thickness', i.e. a I/4" thick gasket should be corapressed
to 5/32-1/8" .

(5) Cautiona
(a) Gaskets marked "H^Cg" are supplied.
(b) In the case the gaaket flange is dirty with oil, olean

it with gasoline or Móthyl Alcohol. Do npt use gaskets

which are dirty with oil. Use a new one.
(c) When using Hycar cement, dilute it with Methyl Xatone

such tnat it drops from brush as a fine thread. Take

care to keep the Methyl Ketone away from fire.
Paint the Hycar cement so that it formo a thin aiv¿
unifono film.

transformer for a long time with a -high iegree of dielectric atren^h, ■
it is necessary to naintain the properties of the insulating oil as
good aa original when it was raanufactured. For this purpose, cara,
ahould be taken to prevent thé oil from deteriorating and gases dlssolv^
in the oil nuat be occasionally checked.
The major cause of oil deterioration lies in oxidation phenomenon.
This raeans that the oil may be oiidized as it contacts air. Such oxida-*

the inclusión of auch-petal &a oepper and iron, and/or the effluence of
insulating vamieh.
Protection of the insylating oil against deterioration is a very
üiportant problem for the maintenance of the txansformer. The Air Seal' ^7

7 The leak tests for the tank and the rubber cell are carried out
Vstrictly_by_a freon gas leakage detector, and aifficient inspections
are nade for the rubber cell setting condition, change of the rubher
cell due to oil change and painting finisb condition during asaembly
of the conservator. However, the following two points may be kept
in ffilnd when the conservator is installed to a transformer.

í*' 1 Inspection after Transportation

í When the coneervator has been transportad or shipped, looseness

of bolts should be carefully inspected and the bolts should be securely

Take off the manhole cover, and the air vent plug on the top of
the rubber cell should be securely tightened, then Introduce the
pressure balance olí of specifled volume through the manhole or drain
valve.
At this time, transformer oil should be uaed as the pressure balanoe
oil and extreme care must be taken so as not to ezceed * 5 percent
of the Bpecified Volume. It should be also checked that oil level
gauge of the conservator indícate "0**.

Fig. 1 PHot Relay (PC-175R)

FOREWORD
The Hitachi Pitot Relay is a protective type relay haviiig
two functioiis. The first step is to discover gas producad
ihrough an internal abnormality in a transformer, detect-
ing it while ihe trouble is still slight, The second step is to
discover oil flow due to a sudden pressure rise during s
heavy fault, detecting it in a minimum amount of lime.
By utilizing features of the conventional Buchholtz relay
and through the addition of several excellent operationa
properties, this relay is constructed to avoid erroneou*
actuations caused by vibratlons.
By adopting the Hitachi Pitot Relay, reliabílity of a trans
former is increased, permitting its functions to be fully ex
hibited.

FEATURES
(1) Possibilities of Detecting Minor Troubles and Early
Discovery of Faults
The first step contact actuales by collecting decomposed
gases of oil and ínsulators produced by an internal abnor-
mality of Ihe iransformer.
Monitoring and detection of ihe gas being produced can be
easily accomplished by an oil gauge and gas extraction
valve. In this manner, imperfect connections and pardal
heating of conductors are checked, which are electrically
difficult to detect, making it possible to prevent the ex
pansión of a fault in advance.
(2) Secure Protective Actuations are Performed
The second step contact is actuated by the Pitot tube
pressure. It is not influenced by oil level variation in the
conservator or by pressure variation of internally sealed
gas. assuring secure protective actuation.
(3) No Érroneous Actuation Due to Vibrations
(Unit: mm) The construction is vibrationproof to prevent erroneous
actuations caused by earthquakes or by self-vibration of a
transformer. The first step contact is of special float

The contad is sealed in a glass tube, actuated by a magnet.
and is separated from oil outside of the case. For this
reason, no corrosión or changes occur due to time passage,
and no erroneous actuation takes place due to vibration or
oil leakage from the terminal sealing section.

PRINCIPIES OF CONSTRUCTION AND

ACTUATION
The Pitot relay is installed at an intermedíate position (
a connecting pipe between the transformer tank and IF
conservator. The installation method ¡s similar to that fe
the Hitachi Buchhóitz relay, permitting these two devici
to be interchanged.
(1) First Step Contact
Gas generated by an abnormality inside the transformi
passes throLigh the connecting tube ÚJ (shown in Fig, I
and is collocted in the gas chamber (Sj. As the gas reach'
a rated amount (400 500cc). it is led into a vibrationpro»
cover by the conduit (7) . The float lowers as the gi
enters the vibrationprooí cover, and the contact
actuated by a magnet. Tberefore, since there is no chani
in level of the float when the gas volume is less than tf
rated amount, no erroneous actuation is caused by vibr
tion. The gas being produced can be easity monitort
and detected by the oil gauge and the gas extractic
valve (6) set in the gas chamber.
(2) Second Contact
Oil flow produced in the connecting tube (T)' (shown
Fig. 5), caused by a sudden pressure rise at the time <
an accident, gives rise to a pressure difference inside ar
outside of the bellows , through the Pitot tu bes (
and (Q> • The difference in level oí the bellows is trar
mitted to the magnet , actuating the contact
There is no pressure difference inside and outside of ti
bellows during normal conditions; consequently, i
erroneous actuation is caused by conservator oil lev
variation or by pressure change in the internally seali
gas.
The second contact is connected to the trip Circuit wh¡>
generaíly cuts off thé transformer from the line.

(3) Accessories SPECIFICATIONS AND PERFORMANCE

Hitachi can manufacture Pitot relays with the following According to the actuation sensitivity of the second step

(a) Special Gas Extraction Valve accessories are not attached to the standard type. The
In construction where inner pressure becomes relay is used according to capacity and type of the trans
negative, such as in a sealed type transformer, air former tank, referring to Table 1 as a standard. Since a
is sucked in by opening a gas extraction valve Pitot tobe is applied to the second step contact, the lowest
when this pressure becomes negative. actuation oil flow rate is accuralely determined, resulting
in negligible individual irregularities.
In this case, Hitachi can supply on request a 2-
step gas extraction valve for discharging gas into
the conservator.
Gas Extraction Valve for Ground Operation
By laying pipes for gas extraction in the lower
part of a transformer, gas is discharged by op
ening and closing the valve from the ground.

Structure Free From Vibrations

The conventional dial thermometer, even though precisely
assenibled from fine parts, experiences most of its troubles
from vibi ation causes.
Hitachi has made ingenióos improvements on theii dial
thermometers by supporting thcm with six shockpioof
rubbers. The conduit tube coming from the bulb is made of
fine pipe protected by a corrugated tube; moreover. the lead
protection tube side is protected from external vibrations by
a flexible coupling of bellows-type structure (Refer to Fig.
2).

Hermeticalty Sealed Construction

The complettíly sealed structure has.passed severe airtight
tests. Air humidity remaining in tKe case is completely
assimilated by moisture absorbing silicagel provided inside
the case (Refer to Fig. 2).

Double pointer Type Dial Thermometer

The double-pointer type dial thermometer allows an overloat
when the ambient temperature ¡s low; at the same time, th<
thermometer protects from overheating. Constructíon con
sists of two sets of temperature indication mechanisms ir
which the main pointer indicares oil temperature and the
subpointer indicates ambient temperature. Range of indica
tion is 0-100"C for the main pointer and 0-40’ for the
subpointer. Graduations for both pointers are arranged on a
concentric circle, maintaining certain relations with each
other to transmit an alarm when both pointers meet. Thal is,
the oil temperature which transmits the alarm is automatical-
ly adjusted.
Since transforméis alloW for overloading within a safe range,
a main graduation of 85°C to subgraduation of 4O'^C, and
main graduation of 60 C to subgraduation of 0 C respective-
ly correspond. In other words, when the ambient tempera-
ture is 0 C. an overload is allowed up to the oil temperature
of 60°C (Refer to Fig, 3).
Fig. 3 Double Poi^ter Type Dial Thermometer

Dial Thermometer with Máximum Readíng Pointer

A thermometer having a pointer which indicates máximum
readíng is called a dial thermometer with máximum reading
pointer, The máximum reading pointer, placed on the same
concentric circle as the main pointer, is moved by a boss on
the main pointer to the point of máximum temperature.
Even when temperature of the transformar lowers and the
main pointer returns, the máximum reading pointer still
remains iti that position. When resetting the máximum
reading pointer to the normal temperature, the magnet
attached to the thermometer is placed onto the tip of the
pointer through the acryl window, and returned to normal
temperature (Refer to Fig. 2).

Installation of Direct Type and Indirect Type

The direct type is used for measuring the oil temperature of
open tanks in which there is no fear of rain entering due to
their indoor installation. The indirect type is used for
outdoor tanks, herrneticalty sealed tanks, and tanks with
conservators. When replacing the thermometer, the bulb is
immersed into oil; however, Hitachi modeis are constructed
for easy assembly or disassembly without removing oil in the
main tank. Since oil is not used in the bulb inserted in the
Unit. fflm case, the bulb is casily removed; moreover, temperature
errors normally generating in the indirect type have been
nearly eliminated by Hitachi's diligent research activities

Relattve Position of Bulb Section and Indication

Section
In dial thermometers installed on transformers, the bulb
section is usually installed higher than the indication section.
When changing this difference (H), it affects indication of the
low temperature of a saturated vapor tensión type ther-
mometer. Consequently, when ordering oniy the ther-
mometer, desígnate the type and L, H dimensions according
to Table 1.

TEMPERATURE RELAYS t;

Oil Temperature Relay and Winding

Temperature Relay
There are two classifications of transformer temperature
relays. One is an oti temperature relay and the other is a
winding temperature relay, the ditference between them
lying oniy in their ihermal sensers.
The thermal senser of the oil temperature relay is a
thermal sensing bulb in a well located a top the trans
former oil. The winding temperature relay has a thermal
sensing bulb similar to the oil temperature relay, whereas
the well for the bulb contains a heating coil to be
connected to a bushing current transformer of the
transformer.
Heat produced by the heating coil is proportionai to the
S(|uare of the heating coil current which is aiso propor
tional to the transformer winding current, so that the
winding temperature relay indirectly measures the temper
ature of .the transformer winding. Fig. 1 is the oil
temperature relay antl Fig. 2 is the winding temperature

Only conductiue Hit^zol 0L-2!4 (condensed coloid of black load) ia

allowed to use. Since there are several kinds of Hitazol, make

sure that it is Hitazol 0L-2K. If Hitazol other than 0L-2M;

non-conductivé Hitazol for example, is applied the part would -got

overheated and cause unexpected troubles.
