May 8th discussion

Medicare is Canada’s publicly funded healthcare system, that provides access for all Canadian
citizens and permanent residents to medically necessary hospital and physician services without
having to pay out of pocket (Government of Canada, 2023). The advantages to this system are
that it is a universal system meaning that it covers all residents of Canada (Government of
Canada, 2023). The financial burden is reduced for residents as this system is publicly funded
and most services are covered so patients do not have to pay out of pocket (Government of
Canada, 2023). Healthcare must provide all residents with access to medically necessary services
based on need and not ability to pay (Government of Canada, 2023).

Some disadvantages to this system include long wait times due to the high demand of services
and limited resources (Effective Public Healthcare Panacea Project, n.d.) This can lead to the
worsening of medical conditions and frustration of patients (The Agenda | TVO Today, 2017).
The long wait times are directly impacted by the shortage of providers within the healthcare
system, this in the long run can impact the quality of patient care (The Agenda | TVO Today,
2017).

Week 3 – May 28th discussion

I think that nurses on Instagram are portrayed in both positive and negative lights. From my
experience I would say that I have been more exposed to the positive side of nurses on
Instagram, I have seen a lot of content from working nurses that are used to educate and motivate
current and future nurses. Many nurses use Instagram to share their stories of resilience,
compassion, and dedication. While others use it to post educational resources about health topics,
managing conditions and clinical skills (Kerr et al., 2020). Nurses on Instagram may also use
their platforms to advocate for nursing issues such as pay gap or other issues that affect the
healthcare community. But with everything especially on social media there is a negative side, I
personally have seen disrespectful patient interactions and sometimes inappropriate or
unprofessional behaviour (Kerr et al., 2020). The risk that comes with the nursing and Instagram
worlds colliding in terms of influencing is the chance of violating patient privacy and breaching
confidentiality rules (Kerr et al., 2020).

Why do people stereotype?

a) A stereotype is an often unfair and untrue belief that many people have about all people
or things with a particular characteristic Britannica Dictionary (2023). They are used to
simplify the social world around us to reduce the level of processing required when being
introduced to new people or things (Prince, 2020). We classify people under a
preconceived notion based on the similar attributes, or features or attitudes (Prince,
2020).
b) There aren’t many positive benefits of stereotypes but a few includes having a predictive
value that allow us to use this previous knowledge in certain situations to help anticipate
the characteristics, they essentially help us to prepare for an interaction (Harvind, 2020).
c) One of the dangers of stereotyping include constantly ignoring the differences between
individuals and we begin to make generalizations, which are things that may not be true.
Stereotypes are over generalizations and they sometimes use unfair judgements and
discriminations which can lead to negative attitudes/prejudice towards a certain social
group (Harvind, 2020).
d) In my opinion the most dangerous nursing stereotype is the undermining of the nursing
profession, many people think things such as “nurses are people who couldn’t get into to
medical school” or that all they do is listen to doctors (Regis College Online, 2019). By
perpetuating the belief that nurses are subordinates, it undervalues the knowledge, skills,
and autonomy of nurses (Summers & Broome, 2019). Nursing is a distinct profession
with its own body of knowledge and expertise, and portraying nurses as less capable or
less important can devalue their contributions to patient care (Summers & Broome,
2019).
e) I think that an important way to help eliminate dangerous stereotypes is to promote
education and awareness about stereotypes, their harmful effects, and the importance of
combating them. This includes providing accurate information about diverse groups and
challenging misconceptions through formal education, workshops, discussions, and
public awareness campaigns (Hope College, 2023). Another way to eliminate dangerous
stereotypes is to have personal interactions with members of other groups as a way to
personally educate yourself (Harvind, 2020).

June 5th

(a) The most attractive things about the job for me would be that it is in a nursing area that I
find interesting. The NICU is the area I hope to work in sometime in the future after
graduation. I have had clinical experience at the hospital in this ad and it was a good
experience so I would love to work there again. Working in the NICU seems exciting to
me because it would give me the opportunity to improve the lives infants and babies at
the beginning of their lives, to me this would be very rewarding. This job is also a
permanent position which I also really like.
(b) I think the drawbacks of this position would be that this unit would be the challenges of
working with small babies and seeing them in this difficult position. I think it would be
difficult emotionally and mentally. Working on this unit requires additional training
which may also be difficult to obtain while also working on the unit. This unit is probably
a high stress unit due to the unpredictability of working with young infants.
