Introduction
Globalization has transformed the way businesses operate, creating new opportunities

for growth and expansion, and presenting a range of challenges for companies operating in a

global context (Luo and Tung, 2007). As businesses expand their operations across borders,

they must navigate a complex landscape of cultural, social, and economic differences, which

can have a significant impact on management practices. Globalization has also led to the

emergence of new technologies, global supply chains, and diverse workforces, which require

companies to adopt new management practices to remain competitive (Gereffi and

Fernandez-Stark, 2016). Effective management practices in a global context require the

ability to navigate cultural differences, coordinate effectively across different locations, and

take into account the social and environmental impacts of operations.

At the same time, according to Boström et al. (2015), globalization presents a range of

challenges for management practices, including communication challenges, cultural

differences, and the complexity of the global supply chain. Effective management in a global

context requires an understanding of these challenges and the ability to adapt to changing

circumstances. This study aims to explore the impacts of globalization on management

practices at Tata Steel UK. Specifically, the study will investigate the challenges and

opportunities of operating in a global context, including communication challenges, cultural

differences, and the complexity of the global supply chain. The study will also explore

strategies for adapting to the changing global environment, including cost-cutting measures,

investment in new technologies, and promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

In order to gather qualitative data for this project, Tata Steel UK personnel will be the

subjects of focus groups and interviews. To find significant themes and patterns relating to

globalization and management practices at Tata Steel UK, the collected data will be analysed

using thematic analysis. This study is important because it provides perceptions into the
5

impacts of globalization on management practices in the steel industry, which has significant

economic, social, and environmental implications. Understanding the challenges and

opportunities of operating in a global context can inform future research and practice in the

field of global management, helping companies to optimize their business outcomes while

also considering social and environmental impacts.

Literature review
Globalization has been a key driving force behind the changes in management

practices observed at Tata Steel UK. The literature on globalization and management

suggests that globalization has led to greater competition, cultural diversity, technological

change, and supply chain complexity, as well as a greater focus on corporate social

responsibility (Gereffi, 2005). Global competition is one of the primary impacts of

globalization on management practices. According to Lund and Tyson (2018), globalization

has led to increased competition from other countries, particularly in industries such as

manufacturing. This has led to a greater emphasis on cost-cutting measures and efficiency in

management practices, as companies strive to remain competitive.

Cultural diversity is another key impact of globalization on management practices. As

companies expand their operations into new markets, they encounter a more diverse

workforce, with employees from different cultural backgrounds. This has led to a greater

focus on cultural sensitivity and understanding within management practices, as well as the

need for effective communication strategies to bridge cultural differences (Matthews and

Thakkar, 2012). In addition, technological change is important impact of globalization on

management practices. Globalization has led to greater access to technology and innovation

from around the world, which has led to increased productivity and efficiency in management

practices. However, as noted by Nylén and Holmström (2015) the rapid pace of technological

change has also presented challenges for management practices, as companies must keep up
6

with new developments to remain competitive. The complexity of the global supply chain is

another important impact of globalization on management practices. As companies source

materials and components from around the world, they encounter a more complex supply

chain, with greater logistical challenges and quality control issues. This has led to a greater

emphasis on supply chain management and the need for effective coordination across

different locations (Golini and Kalchschmidt, 2010)

Finally, corporate social responsibility is another important impact of globalization on

management practices. Globalization has led to greater awareness of the need for corporate

social responsibility, particularly in relation to environmental sustainability and labour

practices. As noted by Camilleri (2019), Companies now need to think about how their

operations will effect society and the environment and take action to address these problems,

both to meet regulatory requirements and to maintain their reputation in the global market.

Generally, the literature suggests that globalization has had a significant impact on

management practices, including at Tata Steel UK. The company has had to adapt to a more

competitive global environment, while also managing a more diverse workforce and keeping

up with the rapid pace of technological change. The complexity of the global supply chain

has also presented challenges, as has the need to be more socially responsible. These findings

highlight the importance of effective management practices in a globalized world and the

need for companies to adapt to these changes.

Research question

Data Analysis:
Thematic analysis, which includes finding patterns and themes in the data, was used

to examine the interview data. The analysis will be done in stages, including familiarizing

yourself with the data, coding, categorization, and interpretation

Analysis of the data with thematic analysis.

According to Castleberry and Nolen (2018), thematic analysis is a qualitative research

technique used to find and examine patterns and themes in qualitative data. It involves

several stages, including data familiarization, coding, categorization, and interpretation. The

above data was examined using thematic analysis in the manner described below:

Data familiarization, which entailed using the information obtained from interviews to

comprehend the context of the responses, it was easier to identify common topics and issue

raised by the participants. Coding was the next process in this analysis which involved

assigning labels to segment of the data to represent similar topics or ideas. We generating the

codes thought inductive coding by deductive coding based on the pre-existing theories and

concepts. To continue with this analysis Categorization was the next step which involved

grouping codes into their broader themes based on their similarity to the research question.

This stage helps to organize the data into meaningful patterns and themes that can be

analysed. Finally, Interpretation of the analysis which involved analysing the themes

identified in the data and drawing conclusions based on the research question. This stage

involved making connections between the data and the research question and developing a

narrative that explains the findings.

Present Themes
Therefore, based on the data collected from the senior managers, mid-level managers,

employees, and customers of Tata Steel UK, the following themes were identified:
12

increased competition as a major impact of globalization on management practices at Tata

Steel UK. Participants noted that the company has responded to this competition by

implementing cost-cutting measures, such as streamlining operations and reducing staff.

Cultural diversity and communication challenges: Participants identified the increasing

cultural diversity of the workforce as a challenge for management practices. Participants

noted that effective communication strategies are needed to bridge cultural differences and

that promoting diversity and inclusion is important for the success of the company.

Technological change and productivity: Participants identified the role of technology in

increasing productivity and efficiency in management practices. Participants noted that

technology has changed rapidly over time and that the company has had to adapt to new

developments to remain competitive.

Supply chain complexity and coordination: Participants identified the complexity of the

global supply chain as a challenge for management practices. Participants noted that effective

coordination across different locations is important for the success of the company and that

supply chain management is a key priority.

Corporate social responsibility and sustainability: Participants identified the increasing

importance of corporate social responsibility and sustainability in management practices.

Participants noted that the company has taken steps to address social and environmental

issues in its operations and that this is important for maintaining the company's reputation

and brand.
