Court dimensions
The badminton court is 13.4m long and 6.1m wide. For singles the court is marked
5.18m wide.
The lines marking out the court are easily distinguishable and coloured white or yellow.
The lines are 40mm wide.
A court may be marked out for singles only. The back boundary lines also become the
long service lines and the posts or the strips of material representing them are placed
on the side lines.
Posts
The posts are 1.55m high from the surface of the court and remain vertical when the net
is strained.
The posts are placed on the double side lines irrespective of whether singles or doubles
is played. The posts or supports must not extend into the court beyond the side lines.
Where it is not practicable to have posts on the side lines, some method can be used to
indicate the position of the side lines where they pass under the net, eg by the use of
thin posts or strips of material 40mm wide, fixed to the side lines and rising vertically to
the net cord.
Net
The top of the net from the surface of the court is 1.524m at the centre of the court and
1.55m over the side lines for doubles.
There must be no gaps between the ends of the net and the posts. If necessary, the full
depth of the net at the ends is tied to the posts.
First, let’s look at the outer line measurement
The length of a badminton court is 44 feet(13.41 m) and the breath of the court is 20 feet
(6.1 m)
These are the outer most line of a badminton court, from this we can also know how
much area will a badminton court take
Area of a badminton court is 81.801 sq.m but some space should also be left along with
the court so that players racket will not hit anything outside the court
Over 1 m should be left from both sides (vertical line) whereas 1.5 m should be left from
both bottom side (horizontal line)
These sidelines are drawn for singles play(click here to know rules), any shuttle landing
outside these line in singles is not valid, one more thing in doubles these lines (vertical to
44 feet line ) are considered as IN both during service and rally.
Whereas the lines which are drawn horizontal to net in both side of the court is service
line and any shuttle in both singles and doubles if land before this line is considered as
OUT
To start your journey in badminton this badminton set (Amazon India / USA) will be
perfect for your at justified price
These horizontal lines to the 20 feet lines is drawn for doubles service meaning that any
shuttle which lands outside this line is OUT in doubles during service
Fourth phase
After the back service line for doubles now let’s look at the measurement of front service
line the distance between net and front service line is 6.5 feet (1.98 m) as shown in the
picture
Fifth phase
You can see in the picture that both side of court is divided further in two half and the
distance between them is 8.5 feet (2.59 m) excluding the sidelines
Both courtside is divided in two half because in badminton service is done diagonally
Sixth phase
In the previous phase, we discussed the breath of those two halves now the length of the
half-court is 13 feet (3.96m). look at the picture for more clarification
The net posts are placed over the doubles sidelines, even when singles are played.
Badminton nets in badminton are made of various materials such as nylon, polyethylene,
and vinyl.
When you are selecting a net go for a dark color because it will provide better visibility
during gameplay
The nets are lined with white tape on the upper side, that has a cord or cable within it so
that the net can be stretched over each of the net posts on either side of the badminton
court.
Height of ceiling
The BWF’s Laws of Badminton and Regulations Handbook states that the ceiling height
for major tournaments must be 39 feet above the floor of the court. The same height
requirement is prescribed for international badminton tournaments, as well.
The main purpose of a high ceiling is that the shuttle should not hit the ceiling when a
player plays aggressive lob or clear.
The purpose to maintain a proper net height is to make the game more
interesting and challenging. There are certain official rules governed
by BWF (Badminton World Federation) to maintain the height of a net.
For tensioning cables, materials like nylon, polyester, and steel are the most
common. Nylon and polyester cables are easier to handle than steel cables but
in terms of precision and durability, steel is the best among the three materials.
What are the Types of Badminton Nets?
In general, there are three types of badminton nets according to the playing
conditions.
1. Indoor
2. Outdoor
3. Portable
As the name suggests, indoor nets are for indoor courts where there is less effect
of wind. The posts used for indoor nets are not planted into the ground, rather a
weighted T-bar mechanism is used for the stability of indoor nets and
adjustments depending on the level of the surface. Also, the use of GI wire and
other accessories which are essential for fixing the outdoor nets, are not needed
for indoor nets.
The outdoor nets have to survive against the weather. For this, the material used
for this type of net should be weather-resistant and sturdy. The outdoor nets are
fixed against stakes which are inserted into the ground vertically.
Portable nets are used for recreational activities. They are inexpensive and
portable enough to be carried anywhere. These nets include two posts that can
be easily uprooted from the ground. To keep the net in proper tension, weights or
anchors are included with this type of net.
