normal curve
▪ I can analyze how normal distribution be
used in solving real-life problems
▪ I can solve problems involving normal
distribution
ACTIVITY NO. 1 FIGURE IT OUT

Situation: Upon receiving the grade for the First Grading, Rex is happy
to see his quarterly mark of 93 in English. However, he became
sad when he see his quarterly grade of 87 in research. He then
concluded that he performed better in English than in Research.

1. Was his conclusion correct?

2. Is there an enough evidence to support the claim?
3. How many of his classmates surpass his grade in English and
Research?
4. How many of his classmates did he surpass for both subjects in the
class?
Finding the Probabilities under the Normal Curve

✓ Finding the areas under the normal curve is the same as

finding the probability.

Example

1. Find the probability that z is greater than or equal to zero but

less than or equal to 1.35.

In symbols, P (0 ≤ Z ≤ 1.35)
Finding the Probabilities under the Normal Curve
Step 1: Shade the region

Step 2: Find the area using the table

Area = 0.4115;
the probability the (0 ≤ Z ≥ 1.35) is 41.15%.
Finding the Probabilities under the Normal Curve
Example

2. Find the probability that z is greater than or equal to -2.0 but

less than or equal to 2.5.

In symbols, P (-2.0 ≤ z ≤ 2.5)

Finding the Probabilities under the Normal Curve
Step 1: Shade the region

Step 2: Find the area

using the table
Area of z = 2.0 is equal to 0.4772
Area of z = 2.5 is equal to 0.4938

Total Area = 0.4772 + 0.4938 = 0.9710

Therefore, the probability of (-2.0 ≤ z ≤ 2.5) is 97.10%

Finding the Probabilities under the Normal Curve
Example

3. Find the probability the z is greater or equal to -1.5.

In symbols, P (z ≥ -1.5)
Finding the Probabilities under the Normal Curve
Step 1: Shade the region

Step 2: Find the area using the table

Area = 0.4332 + 0.5000 = 0.9332

Therefore, the probability the z is greater than or equal to -1.5

is 93.32%

Solving Problems on Standard Normal Distribution
Example

1. The grades of Juan in two subjects namely Algebra and

English are 85 and 82 respectively. In what subject do you
think this particular student performed better?

Algebra English
Population SD 5 5
Population Mean 80 75
Solving Problems on Standard Normal Distribution
Solution

a. Find the z-score for each subject.

Z Algebra = (Grade – Mean) / SD = (85 -80) / 5 = 1.0; z-score

Z English = (Grade – Mean) / SD = (82-75) / 5 = 1.4; z-score

Solving Problems on Standard Normal Distribution
Solution

b. Plot the z-scores on the normal curve

Based on the normal

curve, Juan performed
better in English
Solving Problems on Standard Normal Distribution
If there are 60 students in class, how many of his classmates
surpass his grade in Algebra? English?

Solution

Find the area from the normal curve that is z ≥ 1.0 (Algebra)
and z ≥ 1.4 (English)

Area of z ≥ 1.0 = 0.5000 – 0.3413 = 0.1587 (Algebra)

Area of z ≥ 1.4 = 0.5000 – 0.4192 = 0.0808 (English)

Solving Problems on Standard Normal Distribution
Solution

To get the number of classmates, multiply the area by the

number of students:

Algebra = (0.1587) (60 students) = 9.522 or

approximately 10 students from the class surpass Juan

English = (0.0808) (60 students) = 4.848 or

approximately 5 students from the class.
