Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Students are encouraged to pursue one of three paths after graduation: work,

furthering one's education, or starting one's own business by equipping students with the

necessary skills and knowledge to launch and manage businesses, entrepreneurship

education should foster entrepreneurial mindsets and goals. Senior high schools were

established by the Department of Education to prepare secondary students for

employment, entrepreneurship, and further education (Amper, 2022).

Business Enterprise Simulation is a core subject of Grade 12 Accountancy

Business and Management (ABM) strand. Business Enterprise Simulation crystallizes the

fundamental ideas and procedures of accounting, business, and management by

incorporating all the learning outcomes from various ABM courses. It contains practical

exercises that teach students how to follow the business cycle, such as finding business,

putting it into operation, controlling it, winding it down, and providing pertinent

management reporting in the context of moral principles and the corresponding social

responsibility (Cuaresma, n.d).

Additionally, Business Enterprise Simulation is an interactive learning experience

in which participants develop their individual industry-related skills while experiencing

real-world business simulation and systems. Most people who take these classes are just

starting out in their careers and want to improve their professional development.

Participants can enhance their conceptual understanding and put their comprehension of
practical information to the test rather than focusing on theoretical business concepts.

Participants are encouraged to increase their engagement with a course by experiencing

situations that might occur in their current or future jobs by participating in business

simulations, which replicate market factors and conditions that occur in the real world.

Individuals who complete a business reproduction might foster different abilities (indeed,

2023).

Educators from all over the world have always wanted to experiment with novel

pedagogical approaches, teaching strategies, and technology. Educators have also begun

to use simulators to better prepare students with the advent of digital technology.

Simulators allow students to experiment and experience the real-world workplace in a

controlled setting before entering the real world. According to Thanasi-Boce (2020) of

Kuwait, students can learn entrepreneurial skills and be encouraged to participate in

entrepreneurial activities by learning entrepreneurial skills in a simulation setting. As a

result of the simulation experience, students were able to face challenges, overcome

limitations, enhance their analytical abilities, and broaden their business knowledge.

Likewise, according to Zulfiqar et al. (2018) from China, understudies must

develop their skills and aptitudes if they want to thrive in business. While in Africa,

Betáková et al. (2020) claimed that a strong educational system may foster

entrepreneurial attitudes and help launch new enterprises. Many institutions are

emphasizing entrepreneurship education in their courses to entice students to choose

entrepreneurship as a feasible career path. Unfortunately, a number of research have

indicated that students' opinions of the value of entrepreneurship education may be one

way in which entrepreneurship education serves as a motivator. These studies have

demonstrated that college students are ill-equipped to capitalize on business possibilities

and have no immediate plans to launch a company.

In addition, according to the findings of Yan (2018), personality traits and college

students' plans to become entrepreneurs in the long run are strongly linked. Sustainable

entrepreneurship has the potential to benefit both the economy and the environment at the

same time. For improving college students' long-term entrepreneurial intentions and

promoting long-term economic, social, and environmental development, a correct

understanding of the relationship between personality traits and long-term entrepreneurial

intentions, as well as the mediating role of entrepreneurial alertness and opportunity

recognition in this relationship is essential.

In the Philippines, the Curriculum Guide for Business Enterprise Simulation from

the Department of Education incorporates all of the fundamental concepts and procedures

of accounting, business, and management (ABM) as they are utilized in practical business

activities that follow the business cycle. These activities include finding business

opportunities, creating products and services, organizing a company, putting controls in

place, winding down operations, and providing pertinent management reporting in the

context of morality and social responsibility. A business uses technology as needed.

Additionally, an entrepreneur's skills are built on research skills, strategic skills,

marketing skills, operating skills, and financial skills. For starting and running a business,

this combination is essential (Pespeñan, 2023).

The business enterprise simulations can benefit students who want to work in the

field of business. Business enterprise simulations can prepare students for success in their

future occupations by fostering collaboration and teamwork, improving real-world

business skills, stimulating critical thinking and problem-solving, creating a safe learning

environment, and boosting confidence.

On the other hand, the academic strand of Accountancy Business and

Management (ABM) begins in the 2021–2022 school year at Caluluan National High

School. In CNHS, the pioneers of ABM were the first to engage in work immersion

through the Business Enterprise Simulation. The objective of this fundamental subject is

to prepare students for careers in the business sector in the future.

In this study, the researchers want to know the impact of the core subject Business

Enterprise Simulation to Grade 12 ABM students of CNHS who wants to be businessmen

in the future.

Statement of the Problem

The researchers want to know the impact of taking Business Enterprise

Simulation core subject to Grade 12 ABM students who aspire to be in the business

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

The following journal papers and resources—both international and local—serve

as a base for supporting the assertion of the current study. The resources were gathered by

the researchers from online publications. The following summary research papers and

studies were used to further the current study:

According to What is a Business Simulation? 7 Types and Benefits, 2023, a

business simulation is an interactive learning experience in which participants develop

their individual industry-related skills while experiencing real-world business situations

and systems. Most people who take these classes are just starting out in their careers and

want to improve their professional development. Participants can enhance their

conceptual understanding and put their comprehension of practical information to the test

rather than focusing on theoretical business concepts.

In addition, Business Enterprise Simulation is a teaching method that simulates a

business environment for students to learn about various aspects of running a business.

The center subjects of a business undertaking reenactment change contingent upon the

particular program or course, yet regularly incorporate business methodology and

arranging, showcasing and deals, monetary administration, tasks the board, and human

asset the executives. The objective of a business undertaking reenactment is to furnish

understudies with a sensible and commonsense growth opportunity that sets them up for

professions in business and business.

In Business Enterprise Simulation, there are a lot of skills that you can enhance,

according to Knowledge Matters, business simulations teach hard and soft skills tailored

to their individual real-life counterparts. They fall into three categories: Executive

Simulations, Departmental Simulations, and Concept Simulations. Different business

simulations are tailored to address the challenges unique to each role. Along with the hard

skills that business simulations teach, students learn a variety of soft skills such as critical

thinking, decision-making, teamwork, communication, and self-motivated learning. Post-

graduation, students can draw on these skills to enter the job market several strides ahead

of the rest.

Furthermore, in this core subject you can enhance a lot of skills that you can use

in business someday. The skills that you can enhance in this core subject are the thinking

outside the box or the critical thinking. You can be more productive in life and also you

can enhance you decision-making skills.

On the other hand, according to What is a Business Simulation? 7 Types and

Benefits, 2023, there are a lot of advantages you can gain in having a Business Enterprise

Simulation. Business simulations provide several advantages, including the ability to

reduce risk, promote hands-on learning, and keep participants interested. They may foster

experiential learning, establish a risk-free atmosphere, and leave a lasting effect on

participants. Participants who learn through experiential learning tend to retain the

material better than those who study through more conventional classroom approaches.

To keep participants interested and help them learn from their choices, business

simulations provide them with feedback from their teacher or supervisor. They replicate

actual situations, promote cooperation and teamwork, boost learning effectiveness, and
give an understanding of how an organization runs. This enables participants to get a

deeper understanding of ideas and methods in a short amount of time, which is

advantageous to both them and their companies.

Business enterprise simulation is a core subject that is important for several

reasons: realistic experience, critical thinking, collaboration, risk management, and

financial management. It provides students with a realistic experience of running a

business, allowing them to develop practical skills and knowledge that can be applied in

real-world situations. Critical thinking helps students develop problem-solving skills,

collaboration helps students develop collaboration and communication skills, risk

management helps students learn about risk management, and financial management

helps students learn about budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis. These skills are

essential for any business owner or manager.

Additionally, according to Stratx Simulation, 2023, business simulations offer

students and participants the immediate opportunity to learn skills as if they were actually

positioned in a company. This is incredibly effective and is proven to quickly alter

attitudes and behaviors. They teach students to operate well under pressure and time

constraints, and teamwork skills, such as resolving conflict, considering differences of

opinion, and listening to alternative perspectives. The introduction of competition creates

another level of learning engagement that creates even better results. Professor Lewis

Lim, Nanyang Business School, has seen an amazing transformation in his students into

highly analytical, confident, and finance-savvy marketing decision-makers.

Lastly, Business Enterprise Simulation helps the students who wants to be in the

business industry by enhancing the skills of the students. The skills that the students that
they can develop are the, critical-thinking skills, teamwork skills etc. By enhancing the

skills of the students, the students will not have difficulty in actual business.

According to Isoraite, 2020, this paper presents the results of a survey to students

of Business Simulation I course of the Accounting and Administration graduation at Porto

Accounting and Business School - Polytechnic of Porto from the first semester of the

academic year 2018/19. The evidence collected showed that students consider the

business simulation environment as an education methodology fundamental for their

preparation for the job market, even those with previous professional experience.

Business Simulation courses have a very hands-on approach, enabling students to put in

practice some of the theoretical concepts they learn in other courses. During these

courses, students perform diversified and complex activities, which are in line that what

is done in real-world businesses. A great majority of students prefer Business Simulation

courses instead of the internship in a real company that is compulsory for accessing to the

accountant profession. Simulated companies are from different market areas and a group

of 3 or 4 students are supposed to manage them according to some previous planned

activities prepared by teachers.

Both studies have similarities to each other. The first similarity that the researcher

notice is that, they both about Business Enterprise Simulation. And their respondents or

subject are also the same which are the Grade 12 ABM students. On the other hand,

despite of the similarities of the two studies they also have differences to each other, the
first differences that the researcher found is that, the method use in the study of Isoraite is

quantitative which they are using survey to gather data. While in the current study, the

method they used is qualitative which means the researcher will interview the subject to

get the outcome to their study. Lastly, the researcher also noticed that both studies have

different purpose, the study of Isoraite its purpose is to investigate the conditions and

potentials for entrepreneurship education among students taking part in the operations of

business simulation businesses in Lithuanian higher education institutions. While the

current study, its goal is to know the impact of Business Enterprise Simulation to the

students who wants to be a businessman someday.

According to the study of Guizairy, 2018, a business plan is a crucial document

for businesses to use as a management tool. Business plans can help entrepreneurs

strategize their companies and control future expansion. The Malaysian government has

encouraged all higher education providers to make entrepreneurship education a required

subject because of this. The ability to draft an effective business plan is one of the

learning outcomes of entrepreneurship education. This study employed a business plan

simulation to focus on improving students' understanding of entrepreneurship. This study

also takes into account the elements that make it easiest for students to create successful

company plans during their business simulations. This study's methodology included a

pre- and post-research design using a quantitative approach. 114 students participate in

the business simulation as respondents and reply to the quantitative survey's pre-question.

The similarities of both studies, they are both about business, Business Simulation

and how Business Simulation helps the students to improve their skills when it comes in

the business. On the other hand, despite of the similarities of the studies they also have
differences. The first differences that the researcher found is that in the study of Guizairy

she used quantitative method to get the data and get the result of her study. While the

current study used qualitative method and the researcher will interview their subject to

get the outcome of their study.

According to Silva, 2019, globally, educators have always yearned to experiment

with fresh pedagogical theories, instructional strategies, and technological advancements.

With the advent of digitization, educators have begun to employ simulators to better

prepare the students since they let the student explore and feel a true working atmosphere

in a controlled setting, prior to joining the real world. We specifically want to mention the

business simulations among the simulators. These focus on the (re)creation of a corporate

environment in which students complete all of the duties that they would normally

complete in the actual world. Students may acquire and enhance their talents, particularly

soft skills like critical thinking, in these commercial situations.

Otherwise, the similarities of the study of Silva and the current study, they are

both about business, and how Business Enterprise Simulation help the students to

enhance their skills. While the differences of both studies are the study of Silva is about

the Business Simulation course. While the current study is about the Business Enterprise

Simulation or the core subject of the Grade 12 ABM student.

According to the study of Amper, 2022, work immersion is a subject taught in

senior high school to prepare students for careers, entrepreneurship, and postsecondary
education. This qualitative research study focuses on the experiences of senior high

school students during pandemics when they participated in business simulations. The

primary objectives of this study are to identify the various elements that contribute to

entrepreneurial sustainability through business simulation in work immersion classes, to

evaluate the long-term consequences of the entrepreneurial desire to start small

businesses during the Covid-19 pandemic, and to provide the proposed intervention is not

limited to the school. The community has a significant impact on the data gathered from

the students. For students' business simulations to be successful, they need help from the

community in the form of showcasing, support, and monetary help to energize hopeful

business visionaries like the students to keep their private companies running.

On the other hand, the similarities of both studies, the present study and the study

of Amper, is they are both about work immersion. And also, the research design of both

studies is the same which is the qualitative research. Therefore, both studies have also

differences from each other, the present study is aimed to know what is the impact of

Business Enterprise Simulation on the ABM students who aspire to be in the business

industry someday. While the purpose of the study of Amper, is to determine the different

components that contribute to Entrepreneurial sustainability through business simulation

in work immersion subjects and to assess the long-term implications of the

entrepreneurial desire of learners to engage in small businesses for senior high school

students in time of Covid-19 pandemic and aims to provide Intervention Program to

increase the entrepreneurial engagement of learners even after graduation.

According to Cababat, et al, 2023, Entrepreneurship is the ability to recognize the

kinds of products and services that are needed and should be offered to the right audience
at the right time and at the right price. The goal of the study was to ascertain the degree to

which Grade 12 Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM) students personally

mastered the prerequisite skills in the business enterprise simulation. 110 students

responded to a survey using Slovin's formula in this study, which used a descriptive-

survey research design. A weighted mean is used in this study's analysis of the collected

responses. The results showed that the students classified their personal mastery level in

terms of research skills, strategic skills, marketing skills, operating skills, and financial

skills as least mastered, which obviates that these skills are not yet fully developed.

The similarities of both studies are they are the same topic which is about the core

subject, Business Enterprise Simulation of Grade 12 ABM students. And the respondents

of both studies are the same which is the Grade12 ABM students. Besides of having

similarities, both studies also have differences from each other. The first one is the study

of Cababat focuses on the prerequisite skills of the students while the current study

focuses on the Impact of Business Enterprise Simulation on the students who aspire to be

in the business industry someday. Furthermore, both studies used different type of

research. The study of Cababat used, quantitative while the current study used qualitative.

Lastly, according to Rodriguez, 2019, in the field of education, the quality and

perfection of learning are of the highest significance. The K–12 Basic Education Program

aims to help students develop the skills, work ethics, and values necessary for continuing

their education or entering the workforce. Work Immersion has been included as a

requirement in order to better align the curriculum's core subjects with the country's

development goals. This course will give students the chance to practice using their skills

in their areas of specialty and applicable topics in real-world job settings, as well as to get
familiar with the workplace. Students are exposed to and familiarized with the workplace

environment linked to their area of specialty through work immersion.

Otherwise, both studies have similarities with each other. The first similarity that

the researcher notice is that the study of Rodriguez, is about working immersion and the

impact of working immersion to the students. Similarly, to the current study, the current

study focuses on the impact of Business Enterprise Simulation (this is the working

immersion of grade 12 ABM students) on the students. Also, both studies have the same

respondents which are the Grade 12 ABM students. And the differences of the two studies

is, the study of Rodriguez used questionnaire as the main instrument of her study. While

the current study the researcher main instrument is interview.

Chapter 4

ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

In this chapter you can see the finding and the results of the research. The

analyzing, and interpretation of the data that the researcher got from their subject. The

said data were going to be the basis of the research gap.

Profile of the Research Subject

ABM01 is an 18-year-old who lives in Sto.rosario Concepcion Tarlac. He is

Grade 12 ABM students at Caluluan High School. According to his responses. There is

something like I said that will help us when we come to college like we will be given a

broader idea about how to put a business? And how to manage a business and how to

innovate to keep up with the changing needs of people. That's when we have a subject

like our subject, which is business enterprise simulation, they teach the basic principles of

business, what are the processes of businesses, how to run the business, the members, the

management, they discuss, so our goals are like there are they like simulation have

extensive knowledge. They were helped or helped by the subject of Yun to be more

prepared when coming to collage Because college is once a step to adults held, and they

help you to be prepared how to when you step in there to adult hold.

ABM02 is an 18-year-old who lives in Parulu ng, Concepcion Tarlac. She is Grade 12

ABM students at Caluluan High School. According to her responses. I think there are

advantages. Core subjects, most of the time, are important and need to be learned

thoroughly. Again, knowledge and strength are power. As a student going through the
