BRIEF HISTORY of

NURSING INFORMATICS
The science and practice that
integrates nursing , its
NURSING information and knowledge,
INFORMATICS with management of
IN THE information and communication
PHILIPPINES technologies to promote the
health of people, families and
communities worldwide.

INFORMATICS
MODEL
History of Nursing
Informatics in the
Philippines
The Phil. Medical Informatics Society(PMIS)
and its founder had a strong influence in
the development of health informatics in
the Philippines

Headed by Dr. Alvin Marcelo, PMIS was

officially registered under the SEC in 1996
by its board composed of 11 physician
By the year 2003, a Master of Science in
Health Informatics was proposed to be
offered by UP – Manila College of
Medicine (major in Medical Informatics)
and the College of Arts and
Science(major in bioinformatics) and was
later approved to offered starting
academic year 2005-2006
In 2008 – NI course in the undergraduate
curriculum was defined by CHED MO 5
series of 2008 but was later revised and
included as Health Informatics course in
CHED MO 14 series of 2009.
The inclusion of the NI as an integral part
of the undergraduate curriculum has
been one of the most influential factors for
the increased awareness and interest in
the field of nursing.

However, the contents of the curriculum

was adapted from international materials
which does not match the local needs.
Current Issues and
Problems
Nursing

people)
Future Vision of Nursing Informatics
Healthcare organization can do much to
support the evolving role of the NI. Among the
recommendations from nursing leadership
organization:

1. Advance NI education through partnership

with colleges of nursing
2. Encourage hospital executives to ensure all
practicing nurses adopt and adhere to all policies
and principles of the TIGER (technology informatics
guiding education reform) foundation initiative

3. Develop nurses potential to fulfill emerging

informatics management roles
4. Build a culture that supports NI through
programs organized around reward and
recognition, professional development,
mentoring, performance planning and
assessment, and career path development.

Computer Information System
ADVANTAGES
• Data maintenance
• Low maintenance cost
• Volume of data is not an issue
• No paper is required
• No problem with interpretation/ transcription
• Data can be converted easily to information
• Readiness of the information and data
• Accessibility to any healthcare personnel and
accessibility to any healthcare institution
• Data cannot be corrupted easily (with proper back
up)
• Can integrate with the other system such as
laboratory,
pharmacy, accounting, management etc.
• data handling is easy
• Data integrity is preserved
• Data communication is possible
• Statistical information system can be provided
• Migration to other system is easy
• Can be expanded
• Easy data profiling
Computer Information System
DISADVANTAGES
• Implementation requires severe justification
• High starting cost (requires training for nursing and health
caregiver)
• Requires additional effort to implement
• Additional manpower is necessary
• Special storage is necessary
• Data communication system will have an additional cost
• Data can be easily corrupted (if no back- up is provided)
• Readiness of data and information is possible when
software is provided in the healthcare information
system
• Requires extensive planning, designing and
commercial implementation
• Information management is essential.
