Particle)Boards)

A!particle!board!is!an!engineered!panel!product!consisting!of!cellulosic!particles!of!

various!sizes!that!are!bonded!together!with!a!synthetic!resin!or!binder!under!heat!

and!pressure.!!

In!a!typical!3!layer!particle!board,!a!layer!of!large!particles!is!sandwiched!between!

fine!layers!of!particles!on!the!face!sides!that!provide!a!smooth!finish.!

By!varying!the!particle!source,!geometry,!board!density,!resin!levels,!and!other!

manufacturing!processes,!particle!boards!can!be!produced!for!specific!applications.!!

Various!kinds!of!raw!material!particles!are!used!for!particle!board!manufacture!such!

as!wood!and!wood!wastes,!or!agricultural!wastes!such!as!bagasse,!rice!husk,!hemp,!

cotton!stalk!etc.!!

History)

Initial!development!of!particle!board!took!place!during!the!Second!World!War!in!

Germany!when!its!timber!supplies!were!cut!off.!Post!war,!particle!board!plants!were!

set!up!in!Germany,!US!and!Europe.!In!India!the!first!particle!board!plant!was!set!up!in!

Sitapur!in!the!fifties.!

Meanwhile,!in!1934,!an!engineer!in!Sweden!had!developed!the!defibrator!process!or!

the!thermo!mechanical!pulping!process,!which!hastened!the!development!of!the!

modern!medium!density!fibre!board!industry.!The!first!MDF!plant!was!set!up!in!the!

USA!in!1966.!In!India!the!first!MDF!plant!was!set!up!by!Mangalam!Timber!in!the!late!

80s.!

Particle!boards!were!developed!as!a!substitute!for!constructional!wood!and!have!

Fibre)Boards)

Fibre!boards!are!reconstituted!panels!manufactured!by!defibrizing!!ligno!cellulosic!

material!and!bonding!with!resins!under!pressure.!Hard!boards!and!high!density!fibre!

boards!require!little!or!no!resins!for!bonding!when!manufactured!by!the!wet!process.!

MDFs!can!be!manufactured!with!a!variety!of!physical!properties!and!dimensions!and!

specific!types!can!be!made!keeping!the!end!product!in!mind.!

The!surface!of!MDF!is!flat,!smooth,!uniform,!dense!and!free!of!knots!and!grains.!Its!

homogeneous!density,!stability!and!strength!allow!for!intricate!and!precise!

machining!and!finishing!techniques!and!it!can!be!machined!into!complex!patterns!

that!require!fine!tolerances.!

Fibre!Boards!may!be!classified!into!two!types!depending!upon!thickness!of!the!board.!!

MDF!boards!from!1.9mm!to!35mm!thicknesses!are!commonly!available!in!the!Indian!

Thicknesses!upto!5.5mm!may!be!classified!as!Thin!MDF!.!These!have!applications!in!a!

applications!where!the!warp!resistance,!torsional!stability,!screw!holding!strength!

and!edge!finishing!!characteristics!are!important.!It!can!be!used!for!:!
