RATIONALE: Students will journey across the globe, exploring artists and artworks from different places.
Using what they know and what they don’t in order to create work that connects to culture and embraces
artistic history in expressive new ways. Students will have the opportunity to find new ways of creating that
are broader than within the places they call home. Challenging the way they see art, and share art with one
another and their peers. Rediscovering how cultured art, impacts, changes, and guides the work they are
creating each and every day. Students have their entire lives to travel, and make discoveries. However, by
taking the time to learn early on can allow students to build connections and an understanding for
community that can continue evolving as they grow.
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:
- How does exploring help build/expand communities?
- Why is it important to embrace exploration of art from around the world?
- How can exploring create meaning?
- How does exploring new art impact/change the art I am creating?
UNIT OBJECTIVES:
- Students will learn about art from places around the world, and create work of their own.
- Students will explore connections between their own art and art from other cultures.
- Students will develop an understanding about history of art.
- Students will explore new materials and techniques that correlate to regions of the world.
Part 3: ASSESSMENT
Evidence: Students will end the semester with an artist statement about their final project and overall
thoughts on the unit. Along with that students will partake in an exhibition where families and friends can
also get a chance explore by taking a trip around the world through student work.
Exemplary: Students fully participated in all projects and assignments during unit, and have begun building
an understanding about exploration in art. Student is completely prepared for final exhibition and gave
each project their all.
Essential: Students fully participated in all projects, but haven’t quite build all connections to the purpose
of the work. However, have a completed body of work for the final exhibition.
Partial: Students have participated in a portion of the work, but not formed any connections to the purpose
behind the work. They have incomplete work for the final exhibition.
Lesson 1:
What will students do? Students will work collaboratively to create street art murals.
What will students learn from this? Students will gain insight on art found within the streets of places such
as Portugal, learn about Portugal’s history, and have a look into their culture. Portugal has been known for
using their street art as a way of centering creative expression and now students will have the opportunity
to do the same, while working collaboratively with their peers they will create a mural about their own
exploration within their community.
Lesson 2:
What will students do? Students will create calligraphy styled abstract painting tiles.
What will students learn from this? Students will use materials that they are experienced with in new ways
to explore the beauty of calligraphy. Calligraphy is a huge part of China’s artistic Heritage and culture.
Calligraphy artwork found within China can be seen as expressive, and offers harmonious rhythms of
patterns, lines, and shapes. Students will have the opportunity to use this idea to create abstract paintings
that use similar techniques.
Lesson 3:
What will students do? Students will use collage to create impressionistic landscapes.
What will students learn from this? Students will create work that embodies traditional impressionistic
styles found within France, but explore new ways to achieve a similar outcome. The impressionism
movement within France was lifechanging in that it rebelled against the classical subject matter and
embraced modern art. Students will be able to work in a similar. Given the opportunity to create
landscapes with a focus on color and texture in a whole new way.
Lesson 4:
What will students do? Students will use embroidery to create a collaborative woven quilt.
What will students learn from this? Students will work independently to create an embroidered patch,
using patterns and designs that embody themselves as a person. Once completed the students will work
together to connect all the pieces into one collaborative piece. Within places such as Mexico, embroidery
and quilting connects to their backgrounds within their everyday life along with within their artwork.
