Italy’s relationship with its colonial past (Eritrea, Libya, Somalia, and Ethiopia) has a troublesome
history. After a long period of ‘repression, censorship and nostalgia’ (Labanca), since the 1980s Italian
historians have made available an extensive documentation on the deeds and misdeeds of our colonial
history. Yet Italy is still far from coming to terms with its colonial history; its colonial memory is still
‘scattered and weak’, affected by ‘confusion, regeneration, self-absolution’ (Labanca) or ‘aphasia’ (De
Cesari). A kind of tacit embargo, fueled by public opinion, the media and the political sphere, seems
active against addressing and disseminating critical historical research on the period. A deep-rooted
myth of italiani brava gente is still perpetuated and held against researchers who delve into the dark
pages of Italian colonial history. In spite of a fast-growing literature on Italian colonialism, the legend
of Italian colonialism as different, more tolerant and more human than others is generally accepted.
My aim with the presentation is, on one hand, to highlight some implications of this denial in the
current situation where Italian society is experiencing substantial migration from ex-colonies and other
African countries. On the other hand, I intend to connect this displaced, repressed memory of Italian
colonialism in Africa with the equally repressed discourse of internal colonialism of Southern Italy
during the Risorgimento and Italians’ labor and settler migration in the Mediterranean and elsewhere.
Some samples of lieux de la memoire (or better of no-memory) will be presented.
Come
cambiano attraverso il tempo? Possono essere trasmesse da generazione a generazione? E in che
modo?
in Norvegia negli anni 2000.

- Marco Antonio Cristalli Fratelli
I “fratelli d’Italia”
Retziou:

In particolare tramite l’analisi
coscienza postcoloniale in Italia.
Come è stato messo in luce dalla studiosa Aleida Assmann, ‘over the last two decades, history has
received a potent rival or partner in its claim to access, reconstruct, and represent the past, namely
memory’ (262).
I riferimenti
Rick Crownshaw, Yael Zerubavel, Aleida Assmann, Judith Keilbach, Marianne Hirsch.
This paper argues that research on the relation between memory and migration must engage with the
deconstruction of the very figure of the migrant. Each year thousands of people from former European
colonies are drowning in the Mediterranean Sea or enslaved in their attempt to cross Europe’s borders.
After centuries of colonial exploitation and slave trade, Europe used nationalism as a way to seal itself
off from those violated areas of the Global South. The nation state became the locus of democratic
rights, while selective remembering was used to mythologize “home”, giving priority to the principle
of stasis vis a vis mobility (Nail). The social sciences are responsible for the naturalization of the
distinction between citizens and migrants as the most significant distinction of identity construction
(Bhambra), and political theory has conceived of the question of foreignness as a threat to stability and
identity of established regimes (Honig). The hegemony of this distinction is the result of colonialism,
racial exclusion and selective remembering (Bhambra, Balibar), reproduced in contemporary
institution’s rhetoric of cosmopolitanism and Human Rights. This means that the blind spot or
constitutive outside of contemporary transnational memory processes is the colonial relation (Rigney
and de Cesari), or what Mignolo would call the “colonial wound”. The distinction between citizens
and migrants is thus imbued with asymmetrical power relations, and the paper argues that any intent to
engage with the memory of migration has to examine the memory processes through which the very
notion of the “migrant” has been created.

llamada posmemoria.
The academic prominence of memory in the past twenty years is, in no small measure, attributable to
the salience of counter-memory, the memory of the repressed, (Foucault 1980: 36) within a new
ethical global “cosmopolitan” memory culture, based on the memory of the Holocaust (Levy and
Sznaider 2002). As Eva Hoffmann comments, “there has been a swing of the cultural pendulum”,
which has resulted in the ennoblement, even sanctification, of victimhood (56). Correspondingly, there
has been a contestation of the dominant memory, and a reinstatement of counter-memory. The
exaltation of victimhood is buoyed by an unshakeable belief in the moral traction of counter-memory,

in effect, its capacity to generate the type of critical self-reflexivity that leads to
individual and national atonement for past wrongdoings. In this article, I argue that this
belief is overly optimistic, and that counter-memory is limited in two principal ways: the primarily
national and limited nature of empathy, which problematizes its extension to coteries outside of our
immediate circle and national frontiers; and the neutralization of the authentically subversive elements
of counter-memory which inevitably occurs upon the dominant memory´s appropriation of it.
Therefore, the counter-memory transmitted to the public frequently constitutes a diluted and
exclusionary-memory, which compels the public to ask; what is the counter-memory of the counter-
memory? The main contention of this paper is that the authentic memory of the repressed can be
distorted or by ostensibly ethical efforts to incorporate it into national memory. Prior to embarking on
this critique, I will firstly outline a genealogy and definition of counter-memory, followed by an
examination of the nature of empathy, and the neutralization of counter-memory through the prism of
three case studies: the influence of the memory of the French Resistance on the Indignados Movement
in Spain; the trajectory of Malcolm X’s memory; and the 2007 Ley de la Memoria Histórica (Law of
Historical Memory) in Spain.
Making “Separation and Exile Narratives” ( liuli xushi) Part of Cultural Memory- Irmy
Schweiger
Rather unnoticed by world history, Taiwan has undergone a successful democratic transition, triggered
by the lifting of martial law in 1987. The end of the Chinese Civil War (1927-1949) caused the “great
exodus”, where Chinese nationalists took refuge in Taiwan and disrupted the island’s decolonization
process after Japan was defended in 1945. This complex post-colonial multi-ethnic social
conglomeration of indigenous “Taiwanese” inhabitants and Han immigrants (“Mainlanders”) has put
national identity discourse on the official and public agenda ever since the late 1980s. The 1990s,
however, saw the emergence of previously suppressed social memories of local Taiwanese as driving
force of building an indigenous identity based on the recognition of victimhood under Chiang Kai-
sheks authoritarian regime.
This paper will look into two examples of “separation and exile narratives”, both published in 2009 –
one cosmic cycle after the “Great Divide” – that in a way subvert this indigenization process. Both
texts are written by second-generation civil war exiles, so-called “Mainlanders”, dealing with the
trauma of their parent generation’s displacement. First, I will demonstrate that these narratives register
a sense of crises, so that earlier genres of nostalgic and self-affirmative heimatliteratur pointing to
Mainland China are no longer plausible. Second, I will ask to what extent those stories help construct
a collective memory of the “Great Divide” striving to integrate the trauma of separation and
displacement into cultural memory. Employing the concept of “cosmopolitan memory” (Levy &
Sznaider, Beck), this paper investigates how the two text examples reframe national and vernacular
identity from a cosmopolitan perspective by promoting mutual understanding and acknowledgment of
the history of the ‘Other’ in order to reconcile different versions of a “Chinese past”.

Beppe Fenoglio’s I ventitre giorni della città di Alba – personal memory and
reflections of civil war – Christoph Söding
The Repubblica di Salò period, from September 1943 to April 1945, has been a traumatic experience
for a large part of the Italian post-war society. It is widely known that after 1945 there was little or no
recognition of the fact that what had happened in those one-and-a-half years was in fact a civil war on
northern Italian territory. While there is quite a sizable literary and cinematic production in the late 40s
and 50s about the resistenza, only few of the mostly neorealistic works explicitly deal with the period
as one of a civil war. Beppe Fenoglio, in his short stories, which were published for the first time in
1952, gives a detailed account of his own days with the resistenza and at the same time transfers his
personal memory into an interpretation of the recent Italian past as a civil war. Within the socio-
political climate in post-war Italy, this was not only an uncommon, but also a suppressed position.
This paper argues that Fenoglio’s strategies of narrating the past serve to illustrate an at the time
unspoken truth and thus was instrumental in reconciling parts of the Italian society with its own past.
Departing from a postcolonial perspective, this study adopts the notions of travelling theories (Said,
1994), to trace Fanon´s thinking as enacted in political discourses of the Senegalese Leopold
Senghor´s (Roynette, 2005; Vivaldi, 2007) and the first Mozambican president, Samora Machel.
According to Said (Said, 1993), it is precisely the geographical dispersion which allows for the
renewed revolutionary potential of travelling theories and we will explore this claim through what we
call the tracing of Fanon´s African connections focusing on selected political discourses from the 60s
and 70s, but also providing examples of traces of Fanon´s legacy in contemporary Senegal and
Mozambique. We will contextualize these with examples of Fanonian practices from other social and
political movements in contemporary Africa, such as South Africa, (Gibson, 2011).
Based on analyses of a sample of political discourses, newspaper articles, memoires and secondary
literature, the study discusses the Fanonian traces in these African connections and includes a
discussion of acknowledged or unconscious influences, creative borrowing and the wholesale
appropriation of Fanon´s thinking and relate these to his main works: Black Skin, White Masks
(Fanon, 2008 , [1952]), The Wretched of the Earth (Fanon, 2004, [1961]) and Towards the African
Revolution (1964). The hypothesis is that the Fanonian discourse works as a travelling memory for
many African leaders since the independence.
Preliminary results attest to the continued relevance of the Fanonian dual emphasis on the individual
(subjective) and the social and, as his comment to Sartre, the specificity of the Fanonian perspective
on the racial relationship entrenched in a colonial setting. As a preliminary reflection we claim that
the emphasis on the individual (subjective) was disregarded in the discursive superseding of the racial
relationship, particularly identified among liberation movements that adopted (the most purist)
socialist/marxist ideologies. We trace what we consider the erasure and invisibilization of the
everyday racism and provide examples of more recent resurgences of Fanonian discourses and
practices in contemporary social and political movements. We identify a renewed interest for the dual

emphasis on the individual and the social and recognition of a reproduction of the
colonial alienation and segregation in globalized late modernity.
vezes referida e tampouco estudada, resvalou no esquecimento pós-colonial.
cuja estrutura hierárquica coloca as literaturas latino-americanas numa posição menor.
distribuição do capital simbólico no campo literário ?

‘Em Nambuangongo a gente lembra, a gente esquece’: struggles for the memory of liberation in
Angola- Vasco Martins
The paper looks at the ways the violent past between Angolan liberation movements, who fought
between themselves and against Portuguese colonialism, was at the genesis of the politics of memory
of the victor, the MPLA – Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola. The post-independence
capture of the state apparatus by the MPLA, particularly its centres of knowledge and signification
production, permitted the edification of an official state memory based upon this group’s politics of
memory, gradually developing a script that follows specific mnemonic rules. To demonstrate this
progression, the paper brings forth several products and practices of memory (autobiographies, books
of memories, testimonies and discourses), produced by individuals who integrate this disposition of
power and cross these interchangeably with counter-mnemonic products of those who lost the war,
particularly the MPLA’s most direct competitor, the FNLA – National Liberation Front of Angola.
This contrasting of materials has the advantage of highlighting the boundaries of official memory in
Angola. I conclude that the encounter between these mnemonic products, although not sufficient to
alter the content of the official script, did produce a compromise between opposing interpretations that
sponsored the coexistence of different vectors in Angolan official memory. The paper then explores
how this compromise between official and counter-memories was prone to oscillations throughout the
different political phases of the country, but became more visible after a process of post-war
reconciliation that began in 2002, even though it remains largely unfinished.

«Nha Bandera, Nha Terra» or: Politics of memory, liberation struggle and nation-building in Cape
Verde – Inês Nascimento Rodrigues
Amílcar Cabral used to say that nobody fights merely for an anthem or a flag, but if this is
undoubtedly accurate, it is also possible to claim that these national signs are continually under
dispute, mostly in relation to memory. In this sense, my proposal is to think about the 1990s process of
replacing the national symbols in Cape Verde. This process occurred in the background of growing

and global political and memory flows, as the result of the contention between two
singular mnemonic systems that, emerging in specific socioeconomic and party-
political contexts, represent two different liberation-struggle remembrance paradigms and nation-
building projects. These are constructed on the basis of two opposing referents: Africa and Europe. To
illustrate my argument, I suggest analyzing these two sets of memory, as performed by the African
Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde/ African Party for the Independence of Cape
Verde (PAIGC/CV) and by the Movement for Democracy (MpD) through the selection of certain
national symbols that, in my opinion, are particularly expressive of the questions under discussion –
the flag, the anthem, the holiday calendar and the currency in Cape Verde.

entendimento do passado colonial.
colonial branca e negra.
(Hirsch 2008).
A alegoria é

A reconstrução

Transnational memories and the experience of migration in Persepolis of Marjan Satrapi- Amirpasha
Tavakkoli.
As a young girl, Marjan starts to live in Europe during the period of war between Iran and Iraq. Her
new life in Europe is quite different in comparison to her childhood in revolutionary Iran and she
believed seriously that Vienna will be a sort of Utopia, which helps her to forget the dark years of
revolution. The experience of mobility opens a new chapter in her life, in which her national identity
as an Iranian young girl disappeared temporarily but after a couple of years, her Persian cultural
memory returns and ruined her middle class teenager dreams and ideals. Theoretically, the question of
cultural memory is Persepolis is not separated from that of mobility and in the whole book, Marjan’s
identity is in perpetual reconstruction between her modern new life in Europe and her childhood in
Iran and she tries hardly to find a balance between these two different manners of life. Is it possible
emotionally to go beyond the domination of local cultural memory by choosing to live somewhere
else, or to say it differently, can human being modify or sublime his or her original-local memories by

living new forms of mobility? What are the emotional effects of remembering past cultural memories
in a very new context of life ? We will try to answer these questions by analyzing Marjan’s experience
of mobility in Europe of eighties, with a main focus on her Iranian cultural memory in a comparative
perspective.
The Role of Translation in Narrative Construction: Silence and Morality in Lolita- Michele Teixeira
Passini
The objective of this study is to discuss the role of translation in the way a narrative is constructed,
that is, as a mechanism that corroborates the emphasis of certain aspects and the silence of others.
Considering that translation consists of a set of operations involving both source and the target
cultures, it cannot be considered as a neutral process, since it is determined by sociocultural and
political elements. Originally published in 1955, Vladimir Nabokov’s book Lolita has three different
translations in Brazilian Portuguese. In this paper, the first one, published by Editora Civilização
Brasileira in 1959, is analyzed and compared to a later translation published by Biblioteca Folha, in
2003. The main claim is that by comparing the three texts – original in English and two translations in
Brazilian Portuguese – important differences can be observed in the way the narrative is told affecting,
therefore, how the protagonist’s memory is constructed by the reader. Attention is given especially to
the way the word rape is translated in the 1959 version as rapto instead of estupro. By the correlation
between the effects of translation and the analysis of paratextual elements present in the book, it is
possible to conclude that, in the first translation of Lolita to Brazilian Portuguese certain resources are
used in order to produce a more morally accepted version of the narrative, in accordance with social
values of the society back then.
The forgotten ones: Transnational writers from (Post)Communist Romania. Study-case: Catalin
Dorian Florescu and Andrei Codrescu- Matus Adrian
While comparative literature debates, as postcolonial studies largely explain the case of writers from
the Middle Eastern, Indian and German diaspora, there is a lack of analysis concerning the Eastern and
Central European writers (as Romanian ones) who migrated to Western Europe after the fall of Eastern
Communist political regimes. More specifically, an aspect that needs clarification is the Eastern
European transnational writers’ relationship with national and linguistic identities. Stephen Kellman’s
main argument from Switching Languages/ Translingual Imagination is that migrant writers cannot
escape their translingual and transcultural conditions. In order to tackle the problem effectively, the
following question guide my research: to what extent the multilingual writers can propose a new
poetics in another language?
I aim to fill this gap in the secondary literature, but also wish to limit my story to two representative
Romanian writers, who due to social or political reasons, moved to Western world and write in
English or German. My analysis will focus on comparing the poems of Andrei Codrescu, a Romanian
poet who decided in 1960s to move to New York and become a part of Beatnik Movement, and
Cătălin Dorian Florescu, a Romanian-born novelist who moved to Zürich. Both write about their
nomadic identity, adaptation and living in the new society, as well as about pendular mobilities. My
aim is to understand to what extent these two authors can surpass their original linguistic and cultural
identities and write about their experiences from the former Romania.

In this paper I look at three contemporary Italian ‘fictions of generational memory’ (Erll, 2017) on
mass migration phenomena, namely Polenta e Goanna (2000) by Emilio Gabbrielli, Vita (2003) by
Melania Mazzucco, and Il Piatto dell’angelo (2013) by Laura Pariani.
Drawing on Nünning’s ‘cultural and historical narratology’ and his taxonomical model for the analysis
of metanarrative commentaries (Nünning, 2004; 2009), this paper argues that narratological
investigations can provide valuable insights into the selected literature’s cultural and historical
functions. Firstly, I will illustrate how in these novels autobiographical accounts, bequeathed family
memories, fact-based fictional passages, and metanarrative commentaries coalesce and alternate to
belatedly produce coherent accounts of a long silenced migratory past. Secondly, I contend that in
such ‘revisionist postmodern historical fictions’ (McHale, 1987) the multi-layered and multi-
perspectival structure serves to produce narratives that are of and about memory. These works, in fact,
concurrently compose a plot and reflect on individual mechanisms of mnemonic recall,
transgenerational transmission of memories and postmemorial inheritances that have engendered and
informed the textual ‘emplotment’. In addition, I will argue that metanarrative commentaries carry
among others a ‘distance-reducing’ function aimed at ‘multidirectionally’ awakening the reader’s
empathy for the fate of both past and present economic migrants. Finally, citing recent scholarship that
addresses the interrelations between oral history and memory studies (Fulbrook, 2014), I will explore
how such agents of narrativization turn into agents of memorialization. Given the oral historians and
authors’ analogous role as intermediaries (‘communities of connection’) between ‘communities of
experience’ (migrants) and ‘communities of identification’ (readers), the paper stresses the pivotal role
of narratives within contemporary mnemonic dynamics.

Memory studies revolve around the premise of a tense but confident relationship between literary
writing and historic memory: fiction shelters and illuminates memory, and memory, in its turn,
nourishes but also disrupts literature. It is this premise that this paper attempts to expand, deepen and
sharpen, firstly by looking into the theoretical framework provided by Paul Ricoeur’s major work

Memory, History Forgetting. With particular reference to Ricoeur’s postulate that memory comprises
of a static part (that of the trace, the image) and of a dynamic part (that of recollection), I will show
how the visualising function of imagination and fiction is primarily involved in the memory process
itself. I will then unfold the memory of the Vichy regime in postwar France: drawing on how Renais’
film ‘Nuit et Brouillard’ in 1956 reshaped France’s reception and remembrance of its past, I will
demonstrate how the same events are differently memorized at different periods of time. At last, in an
attempt to discern how the fictive character of literature does not contradict memory but serves it
better, I will refer to Jorge Semprun, a writer haunted by his experience in the Buchenwald camp.
More specifically, I will explore Semprun’s autobiographical work Literature of Life, in which new
narrative forms are employed in order to address the subject of traumatic memory. This paper, via
Semprun and Ricoeur, calls for a reconfiguration of the central to many debates concept of memory
and builds up the figure of memory as mobile, in motion, rather than as immovable and fixed.
Embodied memory and digital media in the global protests against the ‘War on Drugs’ in Mexico-
Katia Olalde
!
In the course of the last decade the ‘War on Drugs’ in Mexico has resulted in at least 235,000 killings
and 32,200 enforced disappearances. Over these years and in response to the increasing violence and
impunity, civil society groups have developed collaborative projects to commemorate the victims and
to denounce the damages caused by the loss of human life. These projects have involved a variety of
strategies and media ranging from collecting reports of killings published in newspapers, performing
public space interventions and organizing open embroidery days, to producing podcasts, creating GIFs
or Internet photo albums. Digital media have enabled these groups to establish long distance
collaboration and remote participation schemes, which do not require volunteers to be present
simultaneously in the same place. Still the objects and images produced remotely by these participants
have been travelling around the world to “meet with their fellows” in public space interventions
and global protests.
In this paper I will focus on five of these collaborative projects: 72 Migrantes (2010-11), Menos Días
Aquí (2010- ongoing), Sobre Vacío (2011), Iniciativa Bordando por la Paz y la Memoria: Una víctima,
un pañuelo (2011- ongoing) and #IlustradoresConAyotzinapa (2014-15). I will analyse the types of
corporeality that the actions performed by participants in situ, remotely and online entail and, drawing
on that analysis, I will reflect on the impact electronic devices and mobile Apps have in the ways we
embody and share cultural memory of the violence perpetrated by state and non state actors in contexts
of impunity.
Exile and homeland trauma: constructing memories In Rithy Panh’s The Missing Picture- Guglielmo
Scafirimuto
Migrant’s identity is a transnational and multiple process, a constantly negotiated work of memory and
narration. Especially in the exile post-traumatic condition, individual identity needs to construct his
meaning in a larger frame of belongings and narratives. Many exiled artists retrospectively look at

homeland memories and images to represent the fragments of their personal histories
inscribed in the official History of the nation.
Rithy Panh, born in Cambodia and exiled in France since his childhood in order to escape the Khmer
Rouge’s genocide of 1975, realizes that there are no images of this historical period (until 1979) in the
archives and decides, in his documentary The Missing Picture (2013), to fabricate new images (clay
figurines) for a mise en scène of the event. The film medium can help the reactivation and the
transmission of the individual and collective memory of a removed past, due to a lack of justice and
recognition. The re-appropriation of History can start from subjective and creative images.
My intervention will focus on the question of representing traumatic and missing memories for an
exiled artist. Through the analysis of this documentary, I will discuss about the relationship between
memory and imagination, the risk of forgetting and the attempt to create a new picture of a repressed
past. My theoretical approach will be nourished by Paul Ricoeur’s reflections5 about memory
responsibility (“devoir de mémoire”), manipulated memory (“mémoire manipulée”) and Aristotele’s
concept of anamnesis.
Memory and the Migratory Aesthetics of Photo-Fiction in Aleksandar Hemon’s The Lazarus Project
and W. G. Sebald’s The Emigrants- Sharon Zelnick
The question of how memories of migration and of migrants are manifested, materialized, and
mobilized in the photo-fiction form is a salient, but as of yet underdeveloped topic. Given the number
of migrant authors who embed photographs into their prose that focus on memory (Ronit Matalon,
Teju Cole, Vladimir Nabokov, Michal Govrin, Michael Ondaatje, Orhan Pamuk, Aleksandar Hemon,
W. G. Sebald) this is striking. These works raise the question of whether there is a parallel that exists
between memory and migration that demands the presence of two mediums? Are memories always
partial and controversial, thereby making the clash between these two mediums the best form to
express this multiple, and at times imaginative act, that the narrators do to ‘remember’ moments of
those who migrated? Using Sebald’s The Emigrants (1996) and Hemon’s The Lazarus Project (2008)
as case studies, I will explore these questions. Through my analysis, I seek to show how the photo-
fiction form that Sebald and Hemon employ challenges conventional notions about the relationship
between photography and memory (as established by Roland Barthes and Sigmund Krakauer). Beyond
calling for a re-conceptualization of this relationship, I hope to show that it is precisely the fractured
and at times fluctuating, hybrid form of photo-fiction that enables an active (inter)mediation of
memories of an experience as complex as migration.

A growing number of artworks in recent decades address violence as a phenomenon linked to history
and politics around the world. This violence has to do, in most cases, with past political and social
conflicts that have marked the development of contemporary nation-states. Nonetheless, especially in
comparison with some Latin American countries, Spain has not yet developed a significant response to
its massive past violence from within the art world. Yet my point of departure is that some
contemporary artistic and audiovisual practices in Spain challenge and contest the officially sanctioned
invisibilization of war and repression.
This paper will examine how certain contemporary artistic practices in Spain seek to boost processes
of both reparations and remembrance, which allow dissonant narratives and alternate constructions of
history and memory. Works by artists such as Pedro G. Romero, Rogelio López Cuenca, Francesc
Torres or Ana Teresa Ortega will be studied in order to present an overview of whats is being done in
this regard within the Spanish contemporary art scene. This project is part of the research group
“Contested Amnesia and Dissonant Narratives: Postconflict, Literature, Art and Archives” at the
University of Zurich.
Memories of trials, disputes and stability of the longest and most vital women’s revolutionary
organization in the world are penned both through plume and pistol by the current women cadres and
guerillas in the revolutionary and cultural field of the National-Democratic Movement. Vigorous
history of national-democratic struggle and protracted peoples’ war remains a complex reality in
Philippine society. Behind these struggles and wars are diverse social movements ranging from basic
mass organizations to the most stalwart nationalist and revolutionary movements. Among those
noteworthy were formed during the late 1960’s to the early years of 1970’s were political turmoil in
the country had its peak. The Women’s Liberation Movement that spans almost half a century had its
formation during those decades.
This paper aims to deliberate the revolutionary consciousness and rhetorical contributions of women
belonging to the organized forces of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) by
interrogating the production of radical literary texts within its sociopolitical contexts. Histories and
memories of struggle under fascism, dictatorship and Martial Law play a fundamental role in the
literary production of women cadres both in the urban and in the countryside since the 1970’s. In this
paper, prose and poetry are being treated as cultural and discursive materials that provide glimpses on
the previous and current praxis of women writers about the principles and narratives of peoples’
struggle in the country. Through the use of dialectical materialism, one can read such literature as
historical and political documents which supports ideological stances of the nationalist movements in
the Philippines.

As an artist and a researcher in visual arts, and having lived in the foothills of the Pyrenean mountains
for almost twenty years, I have come to work with many escapees from the 20th century troubles.
Some had crossed the Pyrenean border during the Retirada, the Spanish Civil War and had settled
down in the area. Others had escaped through the mountains to Spain during the Second World War,
fleeing from the Nazis, and had fought with the Free French Army before coming back to the
Pyrenean region after the war.
My work engages with walking, memory and testimony. How, as an artist, working with refugees, can
I reactivate memory? Is the motion of the body an essential tool? Can the photographic image evoke
past memories? Moreover, whilst listening to or reading testimonies, how does this help those who
may need to remember?
Movement of Conflicting Memories: The Croatian and The Hungarian Diaspora in Chile, 1945-1990-
Erzsébet Árvay
The presentation aims at analysing the memory processes of the Croatian and the Hungarian diaspora
in Chile after the Second World War, with specific emphasis on the 1970s and 1980s.
After the Second World War hundreds of thousands of refugees left Eastern Europe for a better life in
the West. Although most of the refugees settled down in Western Europe or in North America,
hundreds of them started a new life in Chile. My presentation is an attempt to explore how the
settlement processes of the Hungarian and the Croatian emigration took place and how the former
experience of the totalitarian regimes, war, occupation and the events of 1956 affected émigrés’
understanding of the political systems of 1970’s and 1980’s in Chile.
The fragmentation of the Hungarian and the Croatian diaspora in Chile can be traced by analysing
their reactions towards the internal political affairs of the recipient society. In 1970, Salvador Allende,
leader of the Unidad Popular won the Chilean presidential election, which was considered by many
members of diasporic communities as if Communism would threaten them once again. In my
presentation, an interdisciplinary and comparative approach is applied to examine émigrés’ reaction to
the political shifts in Chile.

interactivos simulan continuamente colectividad.

publicación de Carrasco, Drinot y Scorer, Comics & Memory in Latin America (2017).
