Hardware- include various input and output devices that help in feeding data as well as
displaying information
Data-the recorded day to day business transactions
Software-includes all sets of information processing instructions
People-are required for the operation of all information system

Reduce operational cost
Facilitate coordination
Improve data accuracy
Improve quality of human resources

4. Types of information systems


-Office automation system-is a network of various tools, people, technologies required to
perform clerical and managerial tasks
-Knowledge management system-stores and extracts information to help users to enhance their
knowledge and optimize collaboration efforts to complete tasks
-Management information system-uses various transaction data from the transaction process
system to help middle management optimize planning and decision making
-Decision support system-processes data to assist in decision-making

6. Limitations of a management information system
Employee training-length and depth of training may vary making it difficult to estimate the cost
of training
Management information system expense-implementation can be really expensive for
companies looking to manage their operations more effectively
Flexibility-once a MIS is created and installed in a company it may prove to be an inflexible
system

7. Uses of Information systems in management- provide the owner and other decision maker at a
business with the data needed to make informed decisions at a company

Hardware – the system components in which we can physically touch
People- human element needed to run the system
Software-needs to know what to do further dividing it into two that is system software and
application software
Data-generally store information in a database system
Network-a system in which the system is connected through a transmission media

9. Role of MIS
Data capturing-capture data from various internal and external sources of organizations
Processing of data-data is processed to convert it into required information
Storage of information-stores processed and unprocessed data for future use
Retrieval of information-retrieve information from its stores as when required by its users
Dissemination of information-information which is finished is disseminated to the users in the
organization
10. Characteristics of management information system
System approach-implies a holistic approach to the study of the system and its performance
Management oriented-the system development starts from the determination of management
needs and overall business objectives
Need-based-MIS design and development should be asper information needs of managers at
different levels, strategic planning level, management control level and operational control level
