Ensure that the number 1 piston is at the top center position. The valves must be fully closed when the adjustment is made. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Finding the Top Center Position for the No. 4 Piston". 2. The number 1 piston must be at the top center position of the correct stroke. Adjust the valves according to the chart: Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Crankshaft Positions for Fuel Injector Adjustment and Valve Lash Setting”. Valve Lash Check and Adjust (Dial Indicator) 1. Tap each rocker arm on the top of the adjustment screw before you make any adjustments. Use a soft hammer. Install Tooling (T3) onto the appropriate rocker arm assembly: a. Install Tooling (T3c) into Tooling (T3b) or Tooling (T4). b, Attach Tooling (3b) or Tooling (T4) to Tooling (Ta) c. Install Tooling (T3a) into the rear bolt hole on the valve cover base. Install Tooling (T1) and (T2) on the nut of the rocker arm. Use Tooling (1) and (T2), move the rocker assembly upward and move the rocker arm assembly downward. Move the rocker assembly several times. The oil film is removed to-get a true zero reading on the dial indicator. 4. Apply upward pressure to the front of the rocker assembly with Tooling (T1) and (T2). Set Tooling (T3c) to zero. The weight of the Tooling (T1) allows the valve lash to be read. Do not apply any pressure on Tooling (T1). 5. Adjust the valve lash on the appropriate valves: a. Loosen the adjustment locknut. b. Turn the adjustment screw until the valve lash is set to specifications. c. Insert the GO/NO GO side of the tooling between the bridge and the rocker arm foot. Use Tooling Téa (blue feeler gage) labeled "0.5 INTAKE/RIGHT” for the intake valves. Use Tooling 5b (red feeler gage) labeled "1 EXHAUST/LEFT" for the exhaust valves. The portion of the gage labeled "GO" (3) should fit between'this gap: The portion of the gage labeled "NO GO" (2) should not fit between this gap. Loosen the adjustment locknut. b. Insert nominal lash "1" of either the intake or exhaust feeler gage between the bridge and the rocker arm foot. c. Tum the adjusting screw to close up the gap and tighten the adjustment locknut. Note: Do not allow the adjustment screw to turn while tightening the locknut.
