Abstract

ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) has been popular since 2016. Therefore, many
preparations have already been done by all sectors to makeup this free market. Europe
Economic Community has preceeded the famous of AEC. Thus, related to readiness, this
article aimed at finding out the alertness that the third semester of Syariah Banking students
of IAIN Bukittinggi have already prepared, especially their English ability to struggle with
other country in ASEAN. The data of this research was gotten and analyzed quantitatively, by
distributing questionnaire to the third semester of Syariah Banking students of IAIN
Bukittinggi. The finding showed that the students had not been able to compete with other
nations in ASEAN country since English did not become the important lesson for them and it
was strengthen the curriculum of syariah banking does support students’ opportunity to learn
English more.

Foreword
ASEAN is an association of countries in the Southeast Asian region. Association it was
founded in Bangkok on the 8th August 1967 through the Bangkok declaration. Indonesia is
one of the founders of ASEAN along with Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.
Until now ASEAN already has 10 (ten) member countries.
MEA is said to be an opportunity and challenge, because of the implementation of the free
market will facilitate access to ASEAN countries to enter into each other among member
countries. Foreign companies are predicted to standing easily in Indonesia, as well
Indonesian companies can stand in the country other ASEAN members. Of course power
quality work that will win the next competition. This matter become a serious challenge for
the Indonesian nation when they can't compete, No. close the possibility that Indonesians will
become a servant in his own country.
Thus, competing capital mastering technology without the limits of space and this time is the
ability to communicate in English both written and spoken that can be used in the economic
sector,social, cultural, educational and political. Have language skills Active English both
spoken and written is one form of preparedness of the Indonesian people facing the free
market era, because of language England which will bridge the businessmen Indonesia with
entrepreneurs in the region ASEAN in conducting deep cooperation trading. Maintain
harmony between ASEAN countries are also the key to success in welcoming this era.

Research methods
This type of research in this article quantitative descriptive. Research result describe with a
percentage of about student's English ability Islamic banking to welcome the era ASEAN
Economic Community. Population in This research is banking students Sharia Faculty of
Islamic Economics and Business IAIN Bukittinggi. To answer research questions In the first,
research data is collected by distributing questionnaires to students semester III Islamic
Banking Faculty Islamic Economics and Business IAIN Bukittinggi in Economics English
course. The questionnaire consists of 14 (fourteen) question. The questionnaire was
developed refers to the 4 (four) required skills mastered by students; listening (listening),
reading, speaking and writing (writing). Results obtained with present their abilities by
students. Next to answer the second research question, researcher analyze documentation by
reviewing the curriculum, precisely the course distribution book KKNI IAIN Bukittinggi.
Researchers analyze credits of English courses that have been determined through the
Chancellor's Decree.
