1. Specify if the following statements are True (T) or False (F)? [4 points]...each 0.5 marks

A. Graphical user interfaces have made computers more accessible to all

users. [ False ]

B. negative contrast (dark characters on a light screen) provides

higher luminance and, therefore, increased acuity [ True ]

C. In a semantic network model; child nodes inherit properties of

parent nodes. [ True ]

D. analogical mapping technique in problem solving is easy if domains

are semantically different [ False ]

E. Dialogue boxes are information windows that pop up to inform of an

important event or request information. [ True ]

F. The gulf of execution is the distance between the physical

presentation of the system state and the expectation of the user.
[ False ]

G. The WIMP interface style is the first interactive dialog style to be

commonly used. [ False ]

H. Spreadsheets is a sophisticated variation of form filling and it

may contain a value, formula or values from other cells [ True ]

2. Choose the most correct answer? [2 points]... each 0.5marks

A. The DVORAK keyboard differs from the QWERTY one in that

1. It lays out the letters differently to achieve less errors
2. It lays out the letters differently to achieve a faster typing
speed
3. Only the numeric keys are in different positions
4. It is for musical input

B. Handwriting technology is not widely used at present because

1. Nobody is interested in it
2. Recognition is not fast or accurate for a wide range of users
3. Computers can't read handwriting
4. People can't spell properly, leading to confusion

C. An example of a 'direct' device is

1. A digitizing tablet.
2. A mouse.
3. A touch-sensitive screen.
4. A keyboard.

D. Natural language systems are not used because:

1. Not many computers have microphone inputs
2. Of the computational complexities involved in understanding the
speech
3. Speech recognition systems don't work with more than one user
4. Computers can't understand humans

3. Match what it is appropriate in column A with column B?[2 points]… each 0.5 point

A B
used to retrieve information from
database and it requires
Keyboard
1 3 understanding of database structure
accelerators
and language syntax, hence requires
some expertise
Are regions that behave as if they
2 Menu 4 were independent terminals
3 Query languages 2 Restricted form of full WIMP system
Are offered as shortcuts to items
4 Windows 1 offered on menus

4. Answer all following questions? [ 7 points]

1. Describe briefly two different interaction styles used to accommodate the dialog
between user and computer? [ 2 points]
 command line interface: the first interactive dialog style to be commonly used and, in spite of the
availability of menu-driven interfaces, it is still widely used.
 menus
 natural language
 question/answer and query dialogue
 form-fills and spreadsheets
 WIMP: default style for majority of interactive computer systems, especially PCs and desktop
machines
 point and click
 three–dimensional interfaces

2. List some Menus design issues? [ 2 points]

 which kind to use
 what to include in menus at all
 words to use (action or description)
 how to group items
 choice of keyboard accelerators

3. What is problem solving? And explain in details some theories that we could use? [ 3 points]
 Process of finding solution to unfamiliar task using knowledge.
 Theories:
1. Gestalt: Gestalt view that problem solving involves both reuse of knowledge and insight and it
is not a matter of reproducing known responses.

2. Problem space theory: The problem has an initial state and a goal state and people use the
operators to move from the former to the latter.

Credit question: What input and output devices would you use for 'Tourist information system'? Compare and contrast
alternatives, and if appropriate indicate why the conventional keyboard, mouse and CRT screen may be less suitable. [1 points]
 Tourist information system
This is likely to be in a public place. Most users will only visit the system once, so the information
and mode of interaction must be immediately obvious.
1. Touch screen only – easy and direct interaction for first-time users
2. NO mice or styluses – in a public place they wouldn’t stay long!
