SUMMARY OF THE PEARL CHAPTER III & IV

When Kino and Juana got the largest pearl they’ve ever seen. The news spread as fast as a
cheetah to the people in their village, Kino had found the Pearl of the World. And were shocked
by it, not only to Kino’s people but the news spread to the doctor who gave them bad treatment
earlier, and also to the shopkeepers. People were curious and interested with Kino now since he
got the largest pearl, either they wanted to sell something or asked for help. Kino and Juana
didn’t realize that because they were so happy, they thought people shared happiness and joy
with them. Juan Tomas and Apolonia did, since Juan Tomas was also Kino’s brother. He asked
Kino what he would do because he would be a rich man. Kino saw everything he wanted in the
pearl, Kino wanted to marry Juana in the church because last time he didn’t get the chance to
marry there even had the ceremony for their marriage. Kino also wanted to buy shoes , since they
didn’t have any shoes but sandals. And one last thing he wanted to do was schooling Coyotito,
see him with school uniform and shoes while sitting in class like other rich people do. He knew
how to make Coyotito change their life which is the education Coyotito would have when he got
the chance to be schooling. He will write, he will read, he will know how to write, and some
other stuff that he dreamt about Coyotito go to school, he knew the pearl would do it.
The dark had almost come, the priest came to them to bless and see the pearl, he gasped a little
when he saw it. The priest told them to thank the Lord, they agreed since they will marry in
church. The priest complimented them, and left quietly. Kino felt suspicious, it was like the evil
song had come.
They went as usual, Kino saved the pearl by digging it into the hole and sleeping above it. But
one day, the doctor who didn’t help him came to Kino’s place and decided to ask for help. He
manipulates Kino and Juana, by saying that even though Coyotito looked just fine now, the
poison was still there and it could kill him suddenly. Kino didn’t know what to do, he got in his
trap. He knew it, but he always got fooled. They didn’t say no, so they let the doctor handle
Coyotito. He took the white powder, and again Kino was suspicious about that, but he couldn’t
do anything so the doctor did his job. He will come back to Kino’s place an hour later when the
medicine is working and by that he will help Coyotito. After he left, Coyotito’s condition was
getting worse and worse, Juana tried to calm him and as the doctor promised he would come an
hour later, he said “I think I can defeat it. I will try my best” and he did. He told them Coyotito
will get well. After the treatment, the doctor asked for the bill. But Kino will pay them after they
sell the pearl. The doctor acted shocked when he heard that Kino had a pearl and looks like the
doctor was craving for it, Kino fierce
When the night came, as usual Kino saved the pearl in the safest place in his brush house but a
thief was trying to steal the pearl, Kino grabbed the knife and stabbed the thief, he ran and Juana
was very shocked and scared. She thought that the pearl didn’t bring any good to them but
disaster. She thought it would destroy them all. Kino was trying to convince her that it wasn’t
like that. They began this day with hope
Kino will sell the pearl today to pearl buyers, every one of his people came to see it, they will go
crazy if they don't see it. But none of the buyers use an effective method to buy the pearl, it
wastes time. Kino didn’t get any offer that fit in his heart, so Juan Tomas, his brother,
recommended him to sell it in town, La Paz is the town Kino will sell the pearl. He felt strange
when he had to go there, he was scared and afraid of strange things and strangers but he did that
to change his life with his family. But first he met the dealer to ask the price. He met the first
dealer, he was cold to him and especially when the dealer saw the pearl, he had no reaction and
didn’t even glance for the pearl. The pearl wasn’t expensive the color is weird for him and it was
too large, Kino thought the dealer lied to him so that he could get a cheapest deal for the pearl
but the dealer told him to find another dealer to ask the pearl’s price and that was right, the pearl
didn’t cost that much because it is too large and he showed the evidence as a fact that the pearl is
not expensive. It was only worth five hundred pesos, and Kino was pissed off.
The night after trying to sell the pearl, Kino went home. Juan Tomas was coming to him and
warned him that something dangerous might happen to him if he went to the town, but Kino was
still in his hope that the pearl might change his life. He has been awake alll night to protect the
pearl and he sensed someone was outside their house and knew that it would be dangerous for
him and the pearl. He grabbed the knife and went outside, he tried to look for the thief but
because of the darkness the thief hurt him first. Juana dragged him as fast as she could so she
could help him. She cried, she insisted on throwing the pearl because it brought bad luck and it
was a disaster for them. But Kino calmed her, and told her that they both needed to sleep.
Reflection : Sometimes we thought wealth is everything, that we could get everything we wanted
but on the other hand, it might be a disaster. We wouldn’t feel satisfied with one to another
things we wanted and many people will try to bring us down because of jealousy
