24

TRUCKS
Technically, a vehicle that
carries the
load by itself, without a trailer,
is known
as a truck, or a straight
truck.
A vehicle that pulls the load in
a trailer is
known as a tractor. The tractor is
coupled to the trailer through a pivot
point, known as the fifth wheel, which is
mounted on top of the tractor frame.
Most of the big rigs on highways are
tractors pulling trailers.

Trucks are divided into light-duty, medium-duty, and heavy-duty, classifications

depending on their weight. Heavy-duty trucks have a gross vehicle weight of
33,000 lb. (15,000 kg) or more (i.e. the weight of the vehicle plus the weight of
the payload is 33,000 pounds or more). When a heavy-duty truck is pulling a
trailer, it may have a gross combination weight of 80,000 lb (36,360 kg) or
more.

TRUCKS CLASSIFICATIONS
There are 8 trucks classifications include the heavy duty trucks:

• Light trucks – They are in classes 1 to 3 and are usually non commercial
vehicles.

• Medium trucks – Most medium trucks are used commercially, and they
encompass classes 4, 5, and 6.
• Class 4 .- Trucks weigh between 14,001 and 16,000 pounds and include
Ford E-450 passenger van, F-450 super duty pickup, box trucks, and city
delivery trucks.
• Class 5. - Trucks weigh from 16,001 to 19,500 pounds, and include Ford
F-550, large walk-in trucks, delivery trucks, and bucket trucks.
• Class 6. - Trucks weigh between 19,501 and 26,000 pounds. These are
medium-duty commercial trucks such as single-axle, beverage trucks,
rack trucks and School buses.

25

• Class 7. - Trucks weigh from 26,001 to 33,000 pounds and usually have three axles or more: Street
sweepers, garbage trucks, city transit
buses, furniture trucks, and small semi-trucks.
• Class 8. - It is pretty much all the rest. They are really huge trucks weighing more than 33,001
pounds. These trucks surpass heavy duty
and move into severe duty. So, these would be concrete mixer trucks,
dump trucks, and big rigs (Freightliners, Kenworths, Peterbuilts, etc.).

CLASSIC TRUCK PARTS

26
DUMP TRUCK

A dump truck is a truck used for

transporting loose material, such as sand,
gravel, or dirt, for construction. A typical
dump truck is equipped with a
hydraulically operated open-box bed
hinged at the rear, the front of which can
be lifted up to allow the contents to be
deposited on the ground behind the truck at the site of delivery.

TRAILER

A trailer is an unpowered vehicle towed by a powered vehicle. It is commonly

used for the transport of goods and materials. There are semitrailers and
trailers.

27

TANK TRUCK
A tank truck (tanker) is often used to transport liquid or liquefied material. This
can be in the form of oil, gasoline, water, liquid chemicals or fertilizers and
pesticides. The containers are often insulated, pressurized and designed for
single or multiple loads. The tankers are very difficult to drive because they
have a high center of gravity. They can be extremely dangerous as well
because of the spillable cargo they carry.

CONCRETE MIXER TRUCK

A concrete mixer or cement mixer is a device that homogeneously combines

cement, aggregate such as sand or gravel, and water to form concrete. A
typical concrete mixer uses a revolving drum to mix the components.
