The political highlights of Greece during the
year 1961
o On January 1, 1961 Greeece became member of the
European Economic Community
(EEC) paving the way for her accession to the
European Union. This constituted a noteworthy step for
Greece as it aligned the country with the Western
Europe and led to financial prosperity.
o The status
of the political stage in Greece during the year 1961 was
relatively stable. Monarchy was stillthe
prevailing political system in
the country: though public dissatisfaction with the
Crown was growing.
1961 was an important year for the country in relation to
economic and political growth.

o On June 11, 1963 Prime Minister Konstantinos
Karamanlis handed in his resignation to king
Paul, bringing to conclusion an
unusually extensive eight year old government Konstantinos
control. Konstantinos Karamanlis was a Karamanlis
prominent personality of greek politics
who had served as a prime minister during the
1950s.
o After the victory of George Papandreou's party
in the elections of November 3rd, 1963 a new
government would be formed. Papandreou
served as a Prime Minister in the 1940s and
the 1960s and as a cabinet minister, among
other things, for around five decades.
However, Papandreou's governance
eventually led to a period of political instability.

Political status in Greece during 1964

o On February 16, 1964 George Papandreou's party wins the elections for a second
time and the new government is finally formed. The political party of Papandreou
canvassed 52,72% of the votes as well as 171 seats.
o During the same year Cyprus, a greek island, faces great crisis as it is claimed by
Turkey. Result of this crisis is a military buildup that takes place both in Cyprus and
Greece and appears destabilize the political status of the country.

o The latest totalitarian regime in


the history of modern Greece, widely known as the
Coup d'etat of 21st April, was imposed by the
colonel George Papadopoulos along with two other
military officers Stylianos Pattakos and Nikolaos
Makarezos in 1967.
o This system took advantage of
the political instability that was prevailing in Greece
at the time and gave a supposed communist threat
as a pretext for maintaining in power by force.

o During the next months the "junta(χούντα) banned all political parties, abolished democracy a
nd imposed a martial law. The dictatorship lasted for
7 years. Throughout this period of time the rights and liberties of citizens were restricted.
The coup leaders imposed censorship and penalized the dissent.
o Politicians, artists, academics, university professors and citizens amounting to thousands wer
e tortured and sent to prison.
o By the end of 1968 Papadopoulos had managed to be in control of
the once collective governance.

year 1973
• On 1973 the junta continued to the abolishment of
the monarchy in Greece and established
Presidential Republic.
• On November 1972 the junta called elections to the
student unions but adulterated the final results.
Due to these incidents students created a militant
and radicalized student movement and occupated
the Law School premises on 21 February,1973 as
well as in March.

• The uprising began on November 14, 1973 when students of the Polytechnic gathered in the
courtyard of the institution abstaining from their classes. Their request; elections for student
unions to be held in December of 1973 and not next year, as the dictators had decided.
• Throughout following assemblies students issued the democratization of university
institutions, increase of expenses on education along with the annulment of a law on the
forced conscription of students.

• In the course of the day, the Polytechnic was crowded with students and other people who
heard the news.The uprising was eventually sparked by the junta's choice to close the Athens
Polytechnic University.

• After midday the resolution was made to occupy the Polytechnic premises. The doors were
closed so that the uprising would start. Later that evening both a Coordinating Committee and
numerous committees in charge with the occupation and communication for the greek people.

• On November 16th big groupes of police forces attacked the people standing outside of the
University with baton, tear guns and bullets. At 3a.m. on November 17 a tank who was standing in
front of the main gate and invaded as it was ordered. Police forces headed the students out of the
building and advanced upon them, brutally suppressing the protest. Many students found tragic
death because the police officers fired upon
them.The last tolitarian regime to occur it was the one of Dimitrios Ioannidis in
1974 which was overthrown in July of the same year.

This tragedy was the beggining of the end of dictatorship in Greece. It also
marked a new dawning for the country's course towards democracy.
