WHAT IS PITRU PAKSHA
PITRU PAKSHA पत ृ प is a 16 days lunar period in Hindu Calender. It is also called as SHRADDH.
Pitralok is a Realm between heaven and earth, governed by YAM (the God of Death, who takes the
soul to Pitralok, where three preceding generations of one’s ancestors reside). This year, Pitru
Paksha/ Shraddh period is starting from 29th September 2023 to 14th October 2023.
SHRADDH is a ritual that is performed to pay homage to our Ancestors, especially to the one’s dead
parents in Hindu religion. As per Hindu traditions, the SOUTH celestial sphere is consecrated to the
ancestors (pitru). Hence, the moment when the Sun transits from the north to the south celestial
sphere is considered to begin a day of the ancestors. This moment is considered sacred during
Bhadrapada month Krishna paksha.
When the legendary donor KARNA died in the epic MAHABHARTA war, his soul transcended to
heaven, he became plagued with extreme hunger, but any food he touched became gold instantly.
Karna and Surya went to INDRA DEV and asked him about the cause of this incident. Indra told Karna
that he had donated gold his entire life, but had never donated food to his ancestors in shraddha.
Hence, the ancestors of kuru who were stuck in limbo cursed him, Karna said that since he was
unaware of his ancestry, he never donated anything in their memory. To make amends, Karna was
permitted to return to the earth for 15–days period, so that he could perform shraddha to them and
donate food and water in their memory. This period is now known as Pitru Paksha.
It is intended to nourish, protect and support the spirit of ancestors in their pilgrimage from the
lower to the higher realm, proceeding their re-incarnation and re-appearance on earth as per their
Karma. Shraddha be performed by the son—usually the eldest son or youngest son (not middle son)
or male relative of the paternal branch of the family, limited to the preceding three generations. The
Shraddh is performed by a son during Pitru Paksha for the soul of his ancestors. The scripture
Markandeya Purana says that if the ancestors are contented with the Shraddh, they will bestow
good health, wealth, wisdom and longevity, and ultimately heaven and salvation upon the Performer
of Shraddh.
