NAME: BUENA, MATUNDOT, FELIPE, AMADOR SCORE: __________________________

COURSE AND SECTION: CT-2B-NS/ET-1A-NS DATE: MAY 16 – MAY 24, 2023

I. OBJECTIVES:
1. To determine the specific heat of a solid specimen using the method of mixtures.
II. PROCEDURE:
1. Click the link
https://media.pearsoncmg.com/bc/bc_0media_chem/chem_sim/calorimetry/Calor.php
2. Read OVERVIEW and OBJECTIVES.
3. Click EXPERIMENT and the RUN EXPERIMENT.

4. Click SOLID, then click CHOOSE SOLID.

5. Click COPPER and move the cursor to 40 grams of copper.
6. Move the cursor for the TEMPERATURE to heat the Copper to 200C.
7. Click SHOW THE SPECIFIC HEAT and record the value in J/gC of the Copper.
8. Click NEXT.
9. On the second setting, click LIQUID and CHOOSE LIQUID to WATER.
10. Move the cursor to measure the amount of water to 150 grams.
11. Record the INITIAL TEMPERATURE of water.
12. Click SHOW THE SPECIFIC HEAT and record the value in J/gC of water.
13. Click NEXT, then Click START.
14. Wait for the experiment to stop and record the FINAL TEMPERATURE of the water after adding
the Copper metal.
15. Repeat procedures 4-14 using ALUMINUM AND IRON.
16. Solve for the Specific Heat Metal Experimentally (CMetal-E) using the following formula:
-qMetal=qwater
-mMetalCMetal-E(T2-TMetal)=mwaterCwater(T2-T1)

CALCULATIONS:

FOR COPPER:

-mMetalCMetal-E(T2-TMetal)=mwaterCwater(T2-T1)
mwater Cwater (T2 − T1 )
CMetal−E =
−mwater (T2 − Tmetal )

𝐽
150 g × 4.184 ⁄𝑔℃ (24.31 ℃ − 20 ℃)
CMetal−E =
−150 g(24.31 ℃ − 200 ℃)

CMetal−E = 0.1026412431 𝐽⁄𝑔℃

FOR ALUMINUM:
-mMetalCMetal-E(T2-TMetal)=mwaterCwater(T2-T1)
mwater Cwater (T2 − T1 )
CMetal−E =
−mwater (T2 − Tmetal )

𝐽
150 g × 4.184 ⁄𝑔℃ (29.80 ℃ − 20 ℃)
CMetal−E =
−150 g(29.80 ℃ − 200 ℃)
CMetal−E = 0.2409118684 𝐽⁄𝑔℃
FOR ALUMINUM:

CMetal−E =
−150 g(25.01 ℃ − 200 ℃)

CMetal−E = 0.1197887879 𝐽⁄𝑔℃
