EMPHATIZE

One of the most abundant and innovative construction works in today’s generation is the
construction of road pavements. From national highways, expressways, local roads, and streets. However,
there are some problems in construction and maintenance of road pavements, especially in Philippine
setting. Based on our research and observation, some of the common problems and disadvantages of
asphalt pavement are cracking, rutting, weak cohesion, and adhesion. This issue leads to early
deterioration of asphalt and repetitively spending large amount of funds for renovating these stated
pavements.
DEFINE
The researchers found a way to somehow mitigate these problems by using solid waste materials
like Bagasse and steel cans and make these into a fiber that will enhance the asphalt quality and reduce
the amount of waste produced by these materials.
IDEATE
This study will focus on the combination of natural fiber and steel fiber to enhance the asphalt
mixture quality.
EXPERIMENTAL
The researchers will use bagasse fiber and steel can fiber with bitumen, sand, gravel, and water to
produce a solution to the current asphalt mixture.
TEST
The researchers will conduct the following test methods namely Marshall Stability and extraction to
determine its functionality. Using the Technological University of the Philippines evaluation instrument
for experimental research the following will also evaluate workability, durability, aesthetic, and safety of
the asphalt mixtures. Additionally, the researchers will also conduct yield point, tensile strength, and
elongation percentage test on the two variables to determine each specific property.
