PCA-Choosing an Organization Worksheet

Worksheet Objectives:
1. Identify an organization and situation you want to study over the remainder of the course.
2. Describe the organization and situation.

Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Describe your organization.

The organization that I am choosing to describe is one of my past employments. A

challenging situation was a changing curriculum during COVID-19 at the Greatness Kids
Club, a youth program created by the Family Involvement Center that specifically helped
children in need of behavioral health services. The organization was a nonprofit that
relied on government grants to help families with a variety of needs navigate the system
and learn steps to help their families’ behavioral needs. This is an organization where I
have worked as a youth staff to youth mentor and finally a medical records specialist. I
have been privileged to work for the company for 3 years in different areas of need and
see the administrative work that goes into every aspect of running a successful nonprofit.

2) Describe how Describe your role in the organization (it can be internal or external).

My role in the organization is internal as I was an active participant at the time trying to
implement the curriculum needed to maintain finances for the programming by reframing
the learning towards behavioral needs programs. I worked closely with the program
manager and helped attend seminars that described the approaches we needed to take to
qualify for funding from different programs. “Traditionally, presidents have relied on
their chiefs of staff to bring a modicum of order and discipline to operations that are
chronically hectic and complex” (Bolman& Deal, 2017, Ch.1). Utilizing employee’s
experiences is often the best way to encourage change implementation. In the situation of
an entirely new system both employee and employers are on an even playing field of
using past experiences to connect with the new requirements set forth. Our goals were to
fund the Greatness Kids Club and continue to teach the children strategies to help them
make informed decisions while evaluating their unique needs.

3) Describe the situation. (See the Canvas instructions for details, especially about how
your situation will be analyzed from five different perspectives over the next five
modules)

The situation that took place with my past employment was a need to change the
curriculum to qualify for the new branch of governmental funding for mental health and
behavioral health in child needs. Because the past health insurance that all children
attending the greatness kids club needed to have to receive funding was closing there was
a strong need to find other funds to maintain the program and continue working with
children who needed youth mentors to guide them. In doing so we had three weeks to
completely change the way that our program was structured and develop individual goals
that could be identified within a specific framework that was provided by the funder’s
requirements. While an organizational change was occurring the COVID-19 pandemic
was at its peak. We needed to implement not only the funding requirements for in-person
mental health mentors but meet the needs that were required to receive governmental
grants and funding.

It was hard to effectively implement new strategies when there was never a consistent
answer as two when where or how the in-person mentoring could take place during the
pandemic. With two risk management observable issues taking place at once the
nonprofit organization was struggling to acquire the funds while being respectful of the
distant learning requirements that were set in place by the state. Having clashes of
location and funding the two largest components to keep a business operating we're at
risk. Collaborating closely with the team to continuously create and develop new ideas
while living in a world where no one seemed to be sure of what the outcome was going to
bring a unique and unforeseen set of situations upon the organization.
