Section 1: Creating your BHAG

Following the information in the “Good to Great Connections” PowerPoint presentation and all
of the additional information provided under the Module 4 content area, and taking your Personal
Mission Statement development efforts into consideration, carefully develop your own personal
long term BHAG. The timeframe for your BHAG is 10-25 years out, however it will depend
upon your age. For example, a 55 year old person might be closer to the 10 year BHAG, whereas
a 30 year old or younger person should be considering a BHAG 25 years out. This BHAG may
be related to your overall life/lifestyle aspirations, or it could be related to some organizational,
protean, or entrepreneurial vision you have for the future. That is up to you. What it needs to be
is BIG! HUGE! REALLY HAIRY! STRETCH YOURSELF! LOOK BEYOND GRADUATE
DEGREE! LOOK BEYOND A JOB! HOW WILL YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THIS
WORLD????

Answer the following:

1) What is your BHAG?

Become the most recognized name in volunteer coordination, domestically and

internationally. My future company: Better World By United People (BWBUP)

2) Why is this your BHAG?

This lets me use my strengths to make this world a better place. I will create an
organization that provides relief domestically and innovate ways to spread volunteer
opportunities. There are people out there who want to contribute to environmental
problems or foreign aid, but they don’t know where to start. By making my organization
the ‘hotspot’ for volunteer opportunities, I can give people are starting point. Using my
analytical and problem solving skills, I can personally work with every individual to
identify their strengths and skillsets. In developing a list of opportunities, I can coordinate
and direct people to where their skillsets would make the most difference.

1
3) How does your BHAG align with your vision statement from Module 4?

My vision statement is to make this world a better place through my own means. My
BHAG allows me to use my strengths in communication, socialization, and leadership to
support the people around me and direct any volunteer efforts in the right direction.
Working with local people, businesses, and communities, my organization can make an
impact and gain recognition toward becoming the most respected name for volunteer
services. This is how I will make a difference and how life fulfillment is defined by my
own standards.

4) How does your BHAG align with your mission statement from Module 4?

My mission is to develop myself and the leadership potential around me to inspire

positive change by honing in on strengths and setting examples. My BHAG capitalizes on
my strengths to spark change in making a difference in this world better. By focusing on
people’s strengths and volunteering spirit, I can focus contributions toward positive
change. The key is to direct leadership and contributions toward the right direction
through personal connections.

5) List your top five (5) obstacles in order from number 5 being least difficult and
number 1 being most difficult you need to overcome in order to obtain your BHAG
and explain the relevance of each one.

#1. Establishing connections overseas to make an impact. This is the most difficult
obstacle because operating in another country is not easy. Different types of governments
and organizations operate overseas and sending volunteers overseas can be challenging in
many ways. Learning to work with existing systems will be a difficult task, but will be
absolutely necessary to ensure the safety of the volunteers.

#2. Gaining fund to start sending volunteers overseas. In order to raise funds for projects,
I need to look for sponsors. However, sponsors may want to influence projects and the
organization. So, I need to be careful in accepting funds. I can also innovate ways to raise
money by connecting with local businesses or organizations as well as find creative ways
to raise funds online.

#3. Gaining domestic recognition. Overcoming this obstacle will take time and effort. As
volunteers complete missions or participate in projects, people will start to recognize the
organization’s name. Organizational effectiveness can only be achieved when volunteer
opportunities are available and the right people are accurately matched to the right
projects. Accurately matching people with projects is the focus of the organization and
this may be learned through years of experience. In expanding domestically, smaller
groups need to created within small communities and leaders within each group need to

2
connected with each other to support focused change. Therefore, this obstacle requires
effective communication methods to be established.

#4. Raising funds and enlisting people to join my organization. This obstacles requires a
search for leaders and developing leadership that promotes positive change. I need to
look within my network and local community to find leaders. I can find people through
my own volunteering experiences and connect with existing volunteers to broaden my
network. I can connect with other volunteering organizations and raise funds with small
projects within my community. Creating projects to raise awareness can get people in the
right spirit to contribute to making this world better. I can look to other organizations and
businesses for donations.

#5. Obtaining all necessary paperwork and permits to start and operate an organization.
This obstacle requires research and time as processes could take a while. Laws and legal
procedures need to be understood and requires need to be met. In developmental stages,
formation of organizational structure needs to support self-management practices. This is
necessary to establish teams within different communities. Communication channels need
to be developed and organizational values and culture needs to be established. Database
of volunteer opportunities and procedures need to be developed. Questionnaires for
participants need to be drawn. This obstacle contains a lot of tedious details that are all
important for organizational success for achieving objectives. In establishing best
practices, the organization can maintain its integrity and autonomy and stay focused on
contributing efforts towards real world problems.

3
Section 2: Career Vision
Consider your long-term vision for your career. Respond to the following questions, and make
connections to your personal mission statement, your BHAG(s), the themes you developed in
Module 4, and the textbook/supplemental readings (as applicable).

Answer the following:

1) Analyze the type of career you want to have, in terms of an organizational career or
a protean career, make sure it is clear you understand the concepts as outlined in
the textbook. Why?

I want a protean career that allows me to maintain a work-life balance. In trying to

manage my own career path, I define my own values and whether the work is
meaningful. According to Harrington and Hall (2007), I am working to define what
success means for me as an individual and am driven to find work satisfaction. In
working towards my ideal protean career, I am looking to gain experience through an
organizational career first because only through experience will I be able to attain a
protean career later. In learning operations and human resource management as well as
resource allocation strategies, I can gain insights for running my own business later.
However, in drawing my own roadmap and setting my own goals, I still maintain control
of my career path. With a protean career, I am in more control of my career as well as my
life.

2) Analyze your career with an explanation as one that moves you up the organization
or one you develop seeking alternative career paths. If you see yourself taking an
alternative career path, which one(s) sound the most likely? Why?

While working in a manager role, I can work to apply my management and leadership
skills as I move up the ladder within the organization. As I develop different management
skillsets within different organizations, I am working to develop an alternative career
path. Only though experience will I be able to identify which organizational values carry
importance for me and how different areas of an organization are connected. While
working for an organization, the income contributes to my future plans.

3) Discuss and explain if you see yourself working an alternative or flexible work
schedule/arrangement? If so, which ones and why?

Depending on the organizations that employ me, I will have to keep an open mind about
having a flexible schedule. In choosing which organization I apply to, I can maintain
some understanding of what type of schedule I would be working. I would like to be
hired by an organization that allows me to have weekends off. However, starting at the

4
bottom within an organization, I understand that my schedule is more likely out of my
control.

4) Research and post current, or past, job postings from your local area, across the
country, or from around the world which illustrate how you might reach your
BHAG. Be sure to provide the Job Title, a small description and why it supports
your BHAG when you provide the URL. Websites such as CareerBuilder, Monster,

SHRM.org or AICPA.org often have job postings. Provide 2 listings for each of the

7
Section 3: Long-Term Strategy
Develop a strategy for moving toward your ideal future work/life situation and the realization of
your BHAG(s). Consider the timeframe for your BHAG(s). Provide a vivid description of life
“the way it will be” once your BHAG is realized.

1) Critically think about and then list the interim steps or milestones you have laid out
for yourself that will aid you in reaching your BHAG (you should have at least 10 to
earn a rating of excellent and be referenced by time)

Within a year, I should be able to research and complete my own organization. Legal
processes should take no longer than six months and I will spend six months researching
and drawing up ideas. I will also use the time to build connections and enlist people to
join my organization. This is the start of my BHAG and I will be busy working my day
job while developing the organization.

In 3 years, I will set up another location within at least one neighboring community. I will
be busy working with other leaders to identify local problems to coordinate volunteering
efforts in providing relief or solutions. This raises organizational awareness within
communities and our network could expand. By this time, I hope to move up in my
organizational career to a leadership position. I will still be juggling multiple roles and
working to maintain a work-life balance.

By 4th year, I hope to set up a location in another state. Using social media and
technology, I can foster relationships with leaders in other organizations and let them
manage operations in their area. At this point, I would look into connecting with NGOs
overseas and research their governments to expand volunteer efforts internationally. With
my day job, I am looking to move one step further up the ladder.

In 5 years, I want to complete designs and ideas for a hospitality business to develop a
protean career to support my personal goals. At this point, my life would be quite busy in
finding ways to sustain my existing work-life balance. Sustain a balance is harder at this
point in time but is necessary to support a healthy mental state. In taking care of my
health, I am in a better position to support my BHAG.

In 6 years, I want to start my own business in hospitality by updating an older business or

building a new structure on land. At this point in my life, I am working to balance my
work and personal life. I am looking to build a family while the self-management
volunteer organization develops with the help of other leaders. This is important for my
BHAG because I need to maintain my own happiness in order to move my goals forward.

8
By the 7th year, I want to establish relationships with NGOs in at least 3 different
countries. At this point in time, I would be searching for more ways to increase funding
for overseas operations. Working to form partnerships with domestic and international
organizations.

In 8 years, I hope to advance further in my organizational career as the income would

help to support my protean career. Less dependency on outside funds will help in
maintain autonomy and sustain organizational culture by keeping control in the hands of
the organization’s leaders.

In 10 years, I want to establish an organization overseas with the support of the local
government and surrounding aide organizations. At this point, research about political,
social, and economic issues will help in creating volunteering opportunities. Best
practices of the self-managing organization will be implement while taking culture into
consideration. Collaborative efforts between different leaders and different organizations
contribute to my BHAG.

In 15 years, I would quit my organizational career to focus on my protean career and

further develop my hospitality business. By having more control of my schedule and
time, I would focus on areas that are important to me such as having a personal life and
reexamining the economic changes to better develop my BHAG.

In 25 years, the self-managed organization would develop world-wide recognition for its
work at home and overseas. At this point, the organization needs to reexamine itself and
consider reinventing process that further support organizational success. Although
constant evaluation is necessary to measure goals and objectives, organizational
assessment needs to evaluate for generational influences at this point.

2) In addition to career-related roles, consider your other life roles in relation to your
career goals. Revisit your responses to the Identities Exercise that you completed in
Module 1 of the course. Based on your long-term strategy, what are the 3 most
precious things you are willing to sacrifice, besides time, to achieve your BHAG?
Why?

In achieving my BHAG, I would have to hold off on becoming a mother. I have always
dreamed of becoming a mother. However, as I have gotten a late start on my career path,
my time will soon to dedicated to obtaining a career and achieving my BHAG. This
makes it difficult to dedicate time to raising a family. In bringing life into this world, I
have to take measures to be a responsible parent. My desired parenting style requires a

9
great deal of attention on raising my child. To support my family and the life I want, I
need to temporarily let go on my desire of becoming a mother.

In working towards a career of my own, I must sacrifice family and social events to focus
on my career. I want to take the time to support my father in changing his life around but
I don’t have the time to wait for him to want to change. In supporting a better future for
myself and my future family, I give up part of my role as a filial daughter. I cannot attend
all family functions and my relationships with certain members may grow distant in the
process.

Finally, I would need to give up on traveling around and exploring the world. In
experiencing different cultures in different places, I look to grow as a person. However,
this goal is to satisfy my inner curiosity. This self-satisfaction needs to be sacrificed for
the greater good of my future. Traveling requires money as well as time and I would not
have much of either while pursuing my BHAG.

10
Section 4: The one to two year plan
Using a SMART goals-based approach, as well as project planning and management skill best
practices, create a detailed project plan for at least two specific goals. At least one must be
related to your long-term BHAG. The other may be related to some other aspect of your career
development or career-life integration. Both of these goals need to be things that you are
passionate about accomplishing.

Your selected goals and SMART plan (see SMART goal information provided in the module)
should be structured based on a one to two-year timeline. It should include specific milestones,
action items, sub-tasks as well as task-related interdependencies as applicable. With respect to
each goal, critically think about what specifically are the things you will do in the next one to
two years to achieve these goals.

Develop a clear and detailed SMART plan, with facilitating goals and steps/actions required
to accomplish your selected goals. It should be evident, by looking at the format and structure
of your plan, that you have developed some significant skills respect to project management.
Include Gantt charts (T) or other visual project representations as you see fit, and be sure to
address your approach to tracking/measuring your progress (M).

1) What is your #1 Goal? (at least one of the following must be related to your BHAG)

Research all process and procedures necessary to start my self-managed volunteer

organization within a year.

a. Specific: In May 2021, I will get in touch with all required agencies for starting
the paperwork and process for starting a business. Starting in my community, I
will contact Calaveras County for a checklist and pay the required processing
fees. I will obtain all necessary permits and talk to a CPA about meeting tax
obligations. By meeting all requirements, the organization would have less
obtacles hindering its development.

b. Measurable: Using a checklist, I can make sure that I complete all necessary
paperwork within the required timeframe. Services are hard to track as
government procedures vary in processing times. If provided tracking
information, then I could track progress to some degree.

c. Attainable: This goal is attainable as it simple requires me to complete paperwork

and pay fees. Getting approval for starting a business is a typical occurrence and
is usually easy.

d. Relevant: This goal matters because it is the starting point to my BHAG. If I don’t
complete these necessary procedures and obtain all required permits, I cannot start
the organization and I cannot make the world a better place in a meaningful way.

11
e. Time-Based: Normal processing time is 4-6 months but the pandemic could push
the processing time out to 8-12 months.

2) What is your #2 Goal?

Become a Operations Manager within an organization.

a. S: I will search all available operations management positions. Apply to as many

companies as position. I will also apply to human resources positions as an
alternative. Within 3 month, I will transition to an position within an business
environment. I will focus on job opportunities within a 50-mile radius, mainly
Sacramento and Stockton areas.

b. M: In my interviews, I can ask about response times and track progress depending
on my interview process.

c. A: This goal is attainable as I have a Bachelor’s Degree and over 10 years of

working experience in a professional setting. I have leadership experience in and
outside of the workplace that will help in my interviews.

d. R: This is worthwhile because I will become a salaried employee rather than

living off of paychecks. I will gain financial stability and this helps to support
financial fees for starting my nonprofit volunteering organization.

12
e. T: I look to gain experience as an associate and after one year, I will look at
advancement opportunities. As soon as a position opens up, I will apply for a
manager role.
