Module 6 Assignment:
Career Plan Template
Section 1: Creating your BHAG
Following the information in the “Good to Great Connections” PowerPoint presentation and all
of the additional information provided under the Module 4 content area, and taking your Personal
Mission Statement development efforts into consideration, carefully develop your own personal
long term BHAG (***one amazingly HUGE, your world changing goal***). The timeframe for
your BHAG is 10-25 years out, however it will depend upon your age. For example, a 55 year
old person might be closer to the 10 year BHAG, whereas a 30 year old or younger person
should be considering a BHAG 25 years out. This BHAG may be related to your overall
life/lifestyle aspirations, or it could be related to some organizational, protean, or
entrepreneurial vision you have for the future. Dig deep and and go beyond the job. That is up to
you. What it needs to be is BIG! HUGE! REALLY HAIRY! STRETCH YOURSELF! LOOK
BEYOND GRADUATE DEGREE! LOOK BEYOND A JOB! HOW WILL YOU MAKE A
DIFFERENCE IN THIS WORLD???? I RECOMMEND WE MEET TO DISCUSS IT TO
ENSURE ITS HUGENESS.

Answer the following:

1) What is your BHAG (***one amazingly HUGE, your world changing goal***)?

I am on a mission to create an evolutionairy organization that is inclusive rather than

exclusive and holds diversity as one of its top values. This organization will be eco-
friendly, and sustainable with a small carbon footprint and focus on changing the world
one person at a time.

2) Why is this your BHAG?

This is my BHAG because I have been a part of many organizations, big and small, and
have also worked with people and a variety of organizations. I have yet to experience an
organization that hits all of my criteria, that being:

Inclusive

Diverse

Sustainable

Teal (Evolutionary)

1
Self-managing

Transparent

Little to no heirarchy, everyone is created equal and pay completely depends on

performance, rather than prior qualifications or degrees.

In the US, almost all organizations are basic in terms Structure. Having a CEO who comes and
goes, and lives a separate life from low level and most other employees. The ability to trust a
team enough to be self-managing is very rare in US organizations, but I have made it my mission
to change that structural disconnect.

3) How does your BHAG align with your vision statement from Module 4?

My BHAG aligns very well with my vision statement, “As long as I have the power to do so, I
will achieve excellence in inclusion rather than exclusion and promote love in all settings I am a
part of, personal and professional.”

4) How does your BHAG align with your mission statement from Module 4?

“My mission is to create an atmosphere around myself that is welcoming to all people while also
projecting my leadership capabilities and my urge to grow others into the best versions of
themselves.” My mission statement also aligns well with my BHAG, showing my sense of
compassion for others and calling for change!

5) List your top five (5) obstacles in order from number 5 being least difficult and
number 1 being most difficult you need to overcome in order to obtain your BHAG
and explain the relevance of each one.

Motivation – I have struggled with motivating myself since I was in high school.
Whether it be in terms of work and tasks, school, or household chores. Motivating myself
to actually want to do something that I will not see immediate results from that truly
benefit me is hard to do. Although, I am working on it every day by getting myself
excited for what the next day holds, the night before. I will go over my calendar at the
end of each day and decide the importance of each task and then decide what my day is
going to look like from there. This has helped with structure and also to get me excited
and motivated to complete my daily tasks.

Resources – When I say resources I do not mean material things like a laptop or earbuds,
I mean the ability to actually come face-to-face with resources like professors, peers,
tutoring, open conversations with coworkers, etc. Being an online student and working
from home can become difficult from a resource perspective because I cannot just look to
my left and right and ask someone a question. I have to take the time to see if anyone is
available, send emails, check calendars, and then actually have the conversation. I also do

2
not have access to the material resources like multiple monitors and office space that my
coworkers and other students may have. Resources are also limited right now on the
diversity front because I am not interacting in person with many people every day,
everything is over the phone or zoom which is still OK but it is not as beneficial as
connecting with many people in person.

Clarity – Clarity relates to resources heavily in terms of having the ability to ask a
coworker a question or another student/professor for help. Many times I dwell on the fact
that I don’t know that answers and it is hard to reach out for small questions that will only
take 60 seconds to explain, I don’t always want to take the time to check calendars and
schedule times to ask a 60 second question.

Time – Time is extremely valuable but many times I do not use it to its full potential
because I am drained or would rather use my time to do something like take my dog on a
hike or cook a full lunch. These mental breaks do help my brain to reset from work and
school but I know I could be getting a lot more done in a day than I am.

Distractions – Distractions is prevalent because I work from home and am an online

student that lives in a 700 square-foot one bedroom apartment with a 80 pound dog and
my boyfriend. Distractions like partying and friends do not get in the way as much as
they might for a typical 21 year old because I am very focused on school and my career.

Section 2: Career Vision

Consider your long-term vision for your career. Respond to the following questions, and make
connections to your personal mission statement, your BHAG(s), the themes you developed in
Module 4, and the textbook/supplemental readings (as applicable).

Answer the following:

1) Analyze the type of career you want to have, in terms of an organizational career or
a protean career, make sure it is clear you understand the concepts as outlined in
the textbook. Why?

I absolutely prefer a protean career rather than typical organizational career. I thrive in self-
managing environments that allow me the autonomy to have independence and freedom to be
creative. This is extremely important to me because I shut down in career cultures that are
corporate, rule-following, and structurally strict. Identity and adaptability are where I thrive and
without those characteristics, I would not be able to succeed within an organization.

3
2) Analyze your career with an explanation as one that moves you up the organization
or one you develop seeking alternative career paths. If you see yourself taking an
alternative career path, which one(s) sound the most likely? Why?

My current career is the best job situation I have ever been in. I would absolutely like to move up
within my organization or a similar circumstance. The career I am in right now is a remote work
environment with flexible hours, ability to work completely independently, and unlimited
networking opportunities. If I were to take an alternative career path, it would be because I had a
change of passion or just wanted new experiences. For example, I have thought about going to
law school and becoming a lawyer because I have a passion for defending those in need.
Although, I am very happy with my current carrer path.

3) Discuss and explain if you see yourself working an alternative or flexible work
schedule/arrangement? If so, which ones and why?

My schedule is already extremely flexible. As long as I sign on at the time of any scheduled calls
or meetings, I am good. Otherwise, I can pick my hours and work whenever I have time to, as
long as my tasks are completed by their due date. I do not see myself working typical corporate
9-5 hours or overnight. I also would prefer to continue working remotely or at least have the
option to work remote, like I am currently doing.

4) Research and post current, or past, job postings from your local area, across the
country, or from around the world which illustrate how you might reach your
BHAG. Be sure to provide the Job Title, a small description and why it supports
your BHAG when you provide the URL. Websites such as CareerBuilder, Monster,
or Indeed might be a good place to begin. Also, career-specific websites such as
SHRM.org or AICPA.org often have job postings. Provide 2 listings for each of the
following time periods:

Section 3: Long-Term Strategy
Develop a strategy for moving toward your ideal future work/life situation and the realization of
your BHAG(s). Consider the timeframe for your BHAG(s). Provide a vivid description of life
“the way it will be” once your BHAG is realized.

1) Critically think about and then list out (not a narrative format) the interim steps or
milestones you have laid out for yourself that will aid you in reaching your BHAG
(you should have at least 10 to earn a rating of excellent and be referenced by time)

Jan. 2022 - Become a salaried employee and move into the iMatter Opperations role

Jan 2022 – Complete brain injury treatment

May. 2022 - Hire an HR person who will specialize in talent acquisition, diversity, and
inclusion.

Jan. 2023 - Move to a organization with better value fit than current organization

2023 – Find out how to become the most sustainable I can be and decrease my current footprint
by over 50%

Feb. 2023 - Decide whether to get an MBA, JD MBA, or neither

Aug. 2023 – Do an executive retreat with other visionaries

2024 – Become a top executive for an organization who fits my values

2030 – Make it to my 30th birthday much happier than I am now

2035 – Become the CEO of a Fortune 500 company

2040 – Retire by 40

2) In addition to career-related roles, consider your other life roles in relation to your
career goals. Revisit your responses to the Identities Exercise that you completed in
Module 1 of the course. Based on your long-term strategy what are the 3 most
precious things you are willing to sacrifice, besides time, to achieve your BHAG?
Why?

The most precious thing I am willing to sacrifice to achieve my BHAG is

relationships. I am currently a apart of an organization who’s values differ greaty from
my own. I am surrounded by individuals with a huge contrast in political ideations,
environmental concerns, etc. Every day I lose a portion of myself when I have to put my
own values aside to be successful at work. Soon, maybe after a year, I will take the step
of ending relationships in order to make it clear that my mission in the world is to change
mankind’s outlook on inclusion, diversity, and sustainability. For example, my boss is a

7
raging anti-vaxx and anti-masker who believes covid is a hoax and refuses to outsource to
those who have covid guidelines within their organization. With time, I will be more than
happy to make it clear to him what the facts are and what I will and will not tolerate and
if he decides to cut ties with me because of that, I am okay with that.

The second sacrifice I am willing to make in order to achieve my BHAG is one

that is directly related to my personal life but will eventually relate to my career goals,
becoming completely vegan and reduce my carbon footprint by 50%. The sacrifice of
giving up all meat (I am Pescatarian) dairy, and animal products, as well as products that
contain palm oil, sulfates, and other harmful substainses will take a lot of time and effort
to achieve. It will also require me to become self-suffient with food, like growing my
own crops, and also to become much more aware of ingredients and where I am buying
products. Eventually, I want my career to follow suit, and become a sustainable business
owner.

The last sacrifice that I am willing to make in order to reach my BHAG is my

own negative emotions towards myself. You will see that my 8th milestone in the above
question is, to make it to my 30th birthday much happier than I am now. I was in an
accident in a soccer game, at 15, that caused a brain injury and swelling to one part of my
brain, similar to the well-known condition CT. Unfortunely that injury has very severe
side-effects like severe depression, debilitating anxiety, bipolar disorder, and suicidal
thoughts and actions. I have let these illnesses take over my life for the last 7 years. I
have finally decided to undergo intense treatment, once I graduate, to reduce the
inflimation in my brain. I am choosing to become the best version of myself and make it
to my 30th birthday so that I can become the evolutionary leader that I know I was created
to become.

8
Section 4: The one to two year plan
Using a SMART goals-based approach, as well as project planning and management skill best
practices, create a detailed project plan for at least two specific goals. At least one must be
related to your long-term BHAG. The other may be related to some other aspect of your career
development or career-life integration. Both of these goals need to be things that you are
passionate about accomplishing.

Your selected goals and SMART plan (see SMART goal information provided in the module)
should be structured based on a one to two-year timeline. It should include specific milestones,
action items, sub-tasks as well as task-related interdependencies as applicable. With respect to
each goal, critically think about what specifically are the things you will do in the next one to
two years to achieve these goals.

Develop a clear and detailed SMART plan, with facilitating goals and steps/actions required
to accomplish your selected goals. It should be evident, by looking at the format and structure
of your plan, that you have developed some significant skills respect to project management.
Include Gantt charts (T) or other visual project representations as you see fit, and be sure to
address your approach to tracking/measuring your progress (M).

1) What is your #1 Goal? (at least one of the following must be related to your BHAG)

To get my Master’s Degree or Doctorate, specializing in operations, management, or

human resources.

(Insert your #1 Goal above and provide short answers below describing your goal in
terms of the SMART model. Finally, provide a Gantt chart using the tools provided).

a. Specific (provide details about the goal)

In order to excel my career, find out what I am passionate about career wise, and meet my
income needs, I believe it is vital to receive either my master’s degree or doctorate. Based on my
skill set and capabilities, I believe focusing on either operations, management, or human
resources would be best

b. Measurable

I will measure my progress by tracking my application dates, entry exams, written requirements,
etc. I will also track my time and decisions while earning the degree.

c. Attainable

This is a very attainable goal because I have taken an adequate amount of time to decide whether
it is something I would like to do or not. I have also began saving money to pay for school and
exploring my options in terms of degree types and requirements.

d. Relevant

9
This matters to me because it will excel my career and provide me with expertise that I do not
currently have. This will also separate me from other applicants when applying for job positions.

e. Time-Based (provide the timeframe in which you’ll complete this goal)

2) What is your #2 Goal? (at least one of these must be related to your BHAG)

Reach my desired income level of $150,000 within 2 years in order to have the resources to
complete goal #1 and other goals.

a. S

In order to get a graduate degree, live comfortable, and achieve my other goals, a stable income
is extremely necessary. I have mapped out exactly how much money I would need for grad
school and my cost of living. My ideal 2 year income goal is $150,000

b. M

This is easily measurable by tracking my costs, creating a budget, and tracking my income.

c. A

I would say this is attainable but will be hard to accomplish in 2 years because I graduate college
this year. I would need to tripple my current income.

d. R

The relevancy of income speaks for itself.
