Module 6 Assignment:
Career Plan Template
Section 1: Creating your BHAG

Following the information in the “Good to Great Connections” PowerPoint presentation and all

of the additional information provided under the Module 4 content area, and taking your Personal

Mission Statement development efforts into consideration, carefully develop your own personal

long term BHAG (***one amazingly HUGE, your world changing goal***). The timeframe for

your BHAG is 10-25 years out, however it will depend upon your age. For example, a 55 year

old person might be closer to the 10 year BHAG, whereas a 30 year old or younger person

should be considering a BHAG 25 years out. This BHAG may be related to your overall

life/lifestyle aspirations, or it could be related to some organizational, protean, or

entrepreneurial vision you have for the future. Dig deep and and go beyond the job. That is up to

you. What it needs to be is BIG! HUGE! REALLY HAIRY! STRETCH YOURSELF! LOOK

BEYOND GRADUATE DEGREE! LOOK BEYOND A JOB! HOW WILL YOU MAKE A

DIFFERENCE IN THIS WORLD???? I RECOMMEND WE MEET TO DISCUSS IT TO

ENSURE ITS HUGENESS.

Answer the following:

1) What is your BHAG (***one amazingly HUGE, your world changing goal***)?
As a Shift Supervisor at Starbucks, I have learned many things about what it takes to be a

great leader. There is a large emphasis on making leaders out of those who are invested.

My BHAG involves getting a career in the corporate office in a position that is remote,

assist and teaches training material on leadership to the company influencing those who

want to advance in becoming great leaders.

2) Why is this your BHAG?

I have struggled with knowing what I want to do as a career my entire college

career. When I started working at Starbucks, I noticed that a lot of the training material

besides quality of the products, were about leadership and how being a great leader can

make a difference in people’s lives large or small. I realized then that leadership is broad

and can be applied to any job and life as well. Throughout my time in Starbucks, I

became committed to becoming the best leader I can be.

I enjoy working for a company like Starbucks and what they value. My BHAG is

my BHAG because someone has to create the material that is taught within the company.

The material taught is filled with a lot of useful information and made a difference in my

leadership journey that I would love to do it for others as well.

3) How does your BHAG align with your vision statement from Module 4?

"To be a leader who leads by example, through inspiration, and with passion.”
My BHAG is to teach and influence leadership in every aspect of someone’s life and

remembering my vision will push me forward into remembering what my goal is in life

while remaining happy and motivated.

4) How does your BHAG align with your mission statement from Module 4?

"To invest 100% in everything I do personally and professionally allowing to create

the moments that become significant in my life.”

In order to be successful and happy during the process, passion should be present. That is

where I always try to invest 100% in everything I do so I know I tried my best. If I put

every ounce of effort into the things I am passionate about such as my BHAG career

choice, I would be able to give those individuals who are committed to advancing their

leadership skills the material they need to be successful.

5) List your top five (5) obstacles in order from number 5 being least difficult and

number 1 being most difficult you need to overcome in order to obtain your BHAG

and explain the relevance of each one.

1. Self- doubt: I haven’t been passionate about leadership my whole life. It is something

I recently figured out about myself. I am not sure how I come off as a leader to

others; good, bad, effective, etc. I know no matter what, I will always have room to

improve my leadership skills. There is always a question in my mind though, I know I

am and feel passionate about leadership but can others see that in me? The self-doubt

is from within because there is no physical measurement on leadership so how do I

know I am being the leader I strive to be and be that leader someone wants or need
just like I looked up to my leaders. I question my ability every day; am I good enough

to be in the career choice I want to be in? I am trying to constantly get over the self-

doubt in my career choice so I can fully apply my energy instead of holding back

because I question everything I do.

2. Experience in creating material: How does one get experience in creating material to

teach to thousands of people? This is difficult for me because I wouldn’t know where

to start or find someone to mentor me. Although I have some leadership experience, I

can imagine it is different than creating material. What is measured when being

hired? What are they looking for? Creating material includes different leadership

experiences, organizing content that could teach training material, and making sure its

effective. The unanswered questions are part of the obstacle.

3. Obtaining a managerial position or higher: I recently started my journey to promote

within Starbucks; promoting to a store manager. I made a development plan which

has a 6 month time frame. This is an obstacle to reaching my BHAG because I feel

like this promotion would give me more experience in the area of being a leader and

mentor. The obstacle arises when we look at the availability of the position. There

may or may not be a position open at the time I am ready to promote. Another

obstacle would be that maybe I will not be ready to promote in the eyes of my bosses.

4. Remote position: If I were to get a corporate job, it would have to be remote because I

have a family and have established my home state as a home. Finding a remote

position would be a challenging because not every job offers a remote position. It also

may be rare for there to be an open position specific to my preference at the time of
looking for a career. The timing and available may be the biggest challenge in this

area.

5. Organizational leadership degree: Although getting my organizational leadership

degree has been a long challenging journey, at this time of the assignment, obtaining

it is the least difficult. I am currently completing my last course and doing my last

assignment to earn my degree. Obtaining my degree is the first step in reaching my

BHAG and will be my first step in getting closer to my goal.

Section 2: Career Vision

Consider your long-term vision for your career. Respond to the following questions, and make

connections to your personal mission statement, your BHAG(s), the themes you developed in

Module 4, and the textbook/supplemental readings (as applicable).

Answer the following:

1) Analyze the type of career you want to have, in terms of an organizational career or

a protean career, make sure it is clear you understand the concepts as outlined in

the textbook. Why?

The type of career I want to have involves being in the area of human resources where I

can utilize my leadership skills. I would prefer to in in a traditional career because I value

financial security and stability. Although traditional careers focus on advancement and

protean careers focus on personal growth, I like to look at both as something I want to do.

I would like to be in an organization that allows from personal growth and freedom while

advancing into a higher position within the organization. The traditional career I want to

get into would have room to grow in salary and in position. Something that is measurable

and shows my success is something I look for in career success.

2) Analyze your career with an explanation as one that moves you up the organization

or one you develop seeking alternative career paths. If you see yourself taking an

alternative career path, which one(s) sound the most likely? Why?

I currently work with Starbucks Corporation and my BHAG is to move up into a

corporate position. There are many positions within the company that can give me

experience for a possible position I would like to get into. Although there is no absolute

ladder of positions to reach my goal, the higher up in positions to obtain, the more

experience is gained in leadership and with so much more to learn in that area, it would

get me closer to the career I want to be in. My main goal is to stay within the company

but if that does not happen, I look forward to using my promotions in alternative career

paths if the opportunity arises.

3) Discuss and explain if you see yourself working an alternative or flexible work

schedule/arrangement? If so, which ones and why?

I see myself working a flexible work schedule. Part of my BHAG includes a position that

is remote. My ideal job would be in a corporate office teaching or creating training

material on leadership but due to the fact that I live in a state where being physically

present isn’t possible, a remote position is what I am striving for. With a remote position,

I see myself and prefer to work a flexible schedule. I value work/life balance as well as

the time with my family. A flexible schedule will allow me to commit to my work while

prioritizing time with my family.

4) Research and post current, or past, job postings from your local area, across the

country, or from around the world which illustrate how you might reach your

BHAG. Be sure to provide the Job Title, a small description and why it supports

your BHAG when you provide the URL. Websites such as CareerBuilder, Monster,

or Indeed might be a good place to begin. Also, career-specific websites such as

SHRM.org or AICPA.org often have job postings. Provide 2 listings for each of the

following time periods:

a. 2 years from today

i. Assistant store manager: I would first have to become an assistant store

manager before promoting to a store manager. Assist the store manager in

their job description. While also committing to the job description of a

shift supervisors and a barista. This job title would get my foot in the door

for a position that will better utilize my leadership skills.

N/A

ii. Starbucks Store Manager: A Starbucks leader who drives business success

through inspiring partners and customers. The Store Managers bring the

Starbucks experience to life by managing store operations, driving

financial success, building great teams, and building a meeting place in

their communities. This job title will give me more leadership experience

that I can use towards my BHAG position. It also shows I am climbing the

ladder to success by entering higher positions one after the other.

Section 3: Long-Term Strategy

Develop a strategy for moving toward your ideal future work/life situation and the realization of

your BHAG(s). Consider the timeframe for your BHAG(s). Provide a vivid description of life

“the way it will be” once your BHAG is realized.

1) Critically think about and then list out (not a narrative format) the interim steps or

milestones you have laid out for yourself that will aid you in reaching your BHAG

(you should have at least 10 to earn a rating of excellent and be referenced by time)

. (Insert Your 10 Time Referenced Milestones Here as a list)

1. 3-6 months: Not being ready to promote in the eyes of the people hiring.

2. 3-6 months: Newborn in my life; how does childcare look?

3. 6 months: No available Store manager positions in my area.

4. 3-5 years: Not being able to live up to the job description. No possible promotion

due to lack of success.

5. 3-5 years: Will have a toddler-preschooler; will this job allow for work/life

balance?

6. 5 years: No Available District Manager positions open in the area and not being

able to live up to the job description.

7. 5-10 years: Getting enough experience from prior position to qualify for an HR

job that is necessary.

8. First remote job, how will the experience be?

2) In addition to career-related roles, consider your other life roles in relation to your

career goals. Revisit your responses to the Identities Exercise that you completed in

Module 1 of the course. Based on your long-term strategy what are the 3 most

precious things you are willing to sacrifice, besides time, to achieve your BHAG?

Why?

1. Comfortableness at current job/stability: One thing about change is that it gets different

reactions from every individual. For me, when I am comfortable, I don’t find the need to

change things but in my career and in order to reach my BHAG, change will have to

happen. I like to say, “I don’t like change but I am open to it.” Changing from job to job,

learning new job descriptions, and getting my life used to a new schedule is a sacrifice I

will have to do in order to reach my BHAG. Over the time it takes to reach my BHAG, I

will no longer be in my comfort zone and be forced to step into change.

2. Desired hobbies: I can only imagine that taking steps towards my BHAG will be time

consuming. I know in general that when I set my mind to something, it becomes a

priority and takes up most of my time. My work schedule will be different and as

positions change, it might get more demanding. In order to reach my BHAG in the

planned time, I know I will probably have to take a step back from things I love to do

such as going on vacations or weekend activities I love to do with family.

3. Commute: My current job allows me to work 2 miles away from home. I love the

convenience of being only 5 minutes away from work. One of the milestones I had placed

for myself was the job availability. The commute can change drastically from a five
minute drive to a possible 1 hour drive. Other job positions that are part of my BHAG are

remote but there may have to be traveling rather it is by car or plane. Having a longer

commute will take a lot of time out of my day and the love for my short commute will

have to be something I have to give up in order to reach my BHAG.

Section 4: The one to two year plan

Using a SMART goals-based approach, as well as project planning and management skill best

practices, create a detailed project plan for at least two specific goals. At least one must be

related to your long-term BHAG. The other may be related to some other aspect of your career

development or career-life integration. Both of these goals need to be things that you are

passionate about accomplishing.

Your selected goals and SMART plan (see SMART goal information provided in the module)

should be structured based on a one to two-year timeline. It should include specific milestones,

action items, sub-tasks as well as task-related interdependencies as applicable. With respect to

each goal, critically think about what specifically are the things you will do in the next one to

two years to achieve these goals.

Develop a clear and detailed SMART plan, with facilitating goals and steps/actions required

to accomplish your selected goals. It should be evident, by looking at the format and structure

of your plan, that you have developed some significant skills respect to project management.

Include Gantt charts (T) or other visual project representations as you see fit, and be sure to

address your approach to tracking/measuring your progress (M).

1) What is your #1 Goal? (at least one of the following must be related to your BHAG)

(Insert your #1 Goal above and provide short answers below describing your goal in

terms of the SMART model. Finally, provide a Gantt chart using the tools provided).

a. Specific (provide details about the goal)

My number one goal is to get out of the front line of Starbucks; so that includes

getting out of any position in the store. I would like to get past the job positions of

assistant store manager and store manager. Anything past positions out the door

allows me to be a leader for a larger group of people. The people involved would

be me and my peers. My peers are the ones who will be a part of the reason for

promotions. They will be the only referrals I have considering I would be working

with the closely. I want to move forward into a position higher than store manager

to lead larger teams into success.

b. Measurable (explain how you’ll measure your progress or completion)

I will measure my progress by loving my personal development and where it is at

the moment of reflection. I will also measure by the positions I get into. The

higher I get on the ladder; I know I am getting closer to my goal.

c. Attainable (explain why this is possible)

This goal is attainable. I believe this is possible because I have seen others

accomplish goals just like mine. Getting out of the “store” is a goal that one can
reach in 6 months – 2 years depending on job availability and how hard and far a

person is willing to go to reach their goal.

d. Relevant (explain why this matters to you)

I would love to be in a leadership position in my career. Any position I go into

will be in a leadership position but the higher you go the more people you have

the opportunity to influence.

e. Time-Based (provide the timeframe in which you’ll complete this goal)

I plan to reach this goal in 2-5 years. 2026 would be the goal year to be out of the

frontline.

2) What is your #2 Goal? (at least one of these must be related to your BHAG)

(Insert your #2 Goal above and provide short answers below describing your goal in

terms of the SMART model. Finally, provide a Gantt chart using the tools provided).

a. S: I would like to sell my current house and buy a new house. My partner and I

bought this home as a starter home and are now ready to move into our forever

home with our newborn baby. We will still be looking to reside in our current

city. We want to do this so we can invest in a home we plan to stay in versus

putting money into a home we know we want to sell. We want to give our child a

home where they can create memories in and a home she can always come back

to.
b. M: This will be measured by recognizing the important steps in buying and

selling a house. Some steps include selling the house and completing that, finding

a house we want to buy, buying, and moving into the new home. Once we are

settled in and can make it home, I know we have accomplished the goal.

c. A: We have gone through the process of buying a house before so yes this goal is

attainable.

d. R: We will be looking for our forever home and investing in something we want

to have in our lives forever. The sooner we start investing in this goal, the better. I

consider this to be a long term goal. I say that because we are looking to invest in

something we want to be in forever and finding the perfect home to buy can be in

2 months or 2 years.

e. T: I look forward to completing this goal by 2024.
