Unit 3 Assignment:
Career Plan Template
Section 1: Creating your BHAG
Following the information in the “Good to Great Connections” PowerPoint presentation and all
of the additional information provided under the content area, and taking your Personal Mission
Statement development efforts into consideration, carefully develop your own personal long-
term BHAG (***one amazingly HUGE, your world-changing goal***). The timeframe for your
BHAG is 10-25 years out, however, it will depend upon your age. For example, a 55-year-old
person might be closer to the 10-year BHAG, whereas a 30-year-old or younger person should be
considering a BHAG 25 years out. This BHAG may be related to your overall life/lifestyle
aspirations, or it could be related to some organizational, protean, or entrepreneurial vision you
have for the future. Dig deep and go beyond the job. That is up to you. What it needs to be is
BIG! HUGE! REALLY HAIRY! STRETCH YOURSELF! LOOK BEYOND A GRADUATE
DEGREE! LOOK BEYOND A JOB! HOW WILL YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THIS
WORLD?

Answer the following:

1) What is your BHAG (***one amazingly HUGE, your world-changing goal***)? THIS
SHOULD NOT BE A JOB BUT YOUR MISSION IN LIFE!

My BHAG is to develop and own a collective, a center for physical, artistic, and spiritual
growth. A center that is a yoga studio, art gallery, and workshop/class facility. This is a
new concept that would be styled toward a cooperative. I would teach yoga, hold
workshops as a coach, and curate art shows and classes to support local artists.

2) Why is this your BHAG?

My BHAG was born out of a desire to support people in finding and developing their
creative selves and tapping into their true voice and divinity.

3) How does your BHAG align with your vision statement from Unit 2

My Vision Statement: Joy is my essence and my birthright.

My vision statement aligns with my BHAG as the process and the outcome allows for me

to express my vision fully. To live into my vision is to live in joy and to be joy in the
world. Creating a space for others to experience their creative nature aligns with my
vision as it is in essence holding space for others to live from their joy and divine
creativity.

4) How does your BHAG align with your mission statement from Unit 2?

My mission statement: Through optimistic resilience, kindness, and love and

acceptance, I am committed to living my life daringly spreading joy and possibility.

My BHAG aligns with my mission in that this is a new concept of participation and
ownership for the members. The collective will be a space where people can explore
their creativity and possibility. A safe place for the community to connect and express
themselves and have ownership in the care and use of the facility. A collective and
collaborative space to build community, support artists and instructors, and offer classes
for yoga, art, and spiritual life balance.

5) List your top five (5) obstacles in order from number 5 being least difficult and
number 1 being the most difficult you need to overcome in order to obtain your
BHAG and explain the relevance of each one.

Obstacle 1 – I believe investment money will be my most difficult obstacle. A large

investment will be necessary to get the facility, have it running and mobilized.

Obstacle 2- My next major obstacle will more than likely be completing the networking
necessary to get the commitments from people to join and invest their money. This will
take time and mindful energy, as well as persistence. It will require being vulnerable and
resilient since people can voice negative resistance to the idea and strategy.

Obstacle 3 – Then there is always locating the best facility and having it be affordable
and available, with as little rehab as possible. This may be as big a challenge as the
money overall.

Obstacle 4 - Overcoming my own fears, self-doubt, “reality” excuses, procrastination,

and blind spots to stay focused, motivated, and in action toward the ultimate goal. It will
require tenacity and resilience. It will require intentional self-awareness and mindfulness
practices to stay on course and engaged.

Obstacle 5 – Keeping investors, collaborators, and myself motivated and engaged for the
long haul. It will require collaborating with all to adapt and adjust course as needed. It
will require intentional connection to address progress, accountability, and next steps.

Section 2: Career Vision
Consider your long-term vision for your career. Respond to the following questions, and make
connections to your personal mission statement, your BHAG(s), the themes you developed in
Unit 2 and the textbook/supplemental readings (as applicable).

Answer the following:

1) Analyze the type of career you want to have, in terms of an organizational career or
a protean career, and make sure it is clear you understand the concepts as outlined
in the textbook. Why?

The type of career I want to have is a protean career. A career that offers me more
control and flexibility over my work life, (Harrington, B & Hall, D., 2007, p.99).
Although my results for The Career and Life Orientation Index pointed to a moderately
protean career, I believe this is balanced within the collective cooperative organizational
concept that I want to create. Nonetheless, to get where I want to go is going to take a
great deal of entrepreneurial initiative and spirit.

2) Analyze your career with an explanation as one that moves you up the organization
or one you develop seeking alternative career paths. If you see yourself taking an
alternative career path, which one(s) sounds the most likely? Why?

I most definitely will be seeking an alternative career path. As related in the book, it
would be the self-employer ultimately. However, as I am in a new position within a
wonderful organization, I will seek organizational advancement if possible. And I intend
to take the advice of the authors and Manage Up as necessary. Not quite sure what
organizational advancement might look like at this point as the organization is currently
reorganizing. I imagine this as either moving laterally to the membership or audience
division or moving up in the development department to possibly an Officers position. In
addition, I am closer to retirement years than climbing the corporate ladder years.
Nonetheless, I intend to stay vigilant toward managing my career. f

3) Discuss and explain if you see yourself working an alternative or flexible work
schedule/arrangement? If so, which ones and why?

My current work schedule does allow for me to work remotely up to two days per week.
I have not put in to do this yet. However, I do look forward to implementing this in the
near future. Once I open the cooperative my schedule will be an alternative schedule as
to accommodate evenings and weekends as well.

Section 3: Long-Term Strategy
Develop a strategy for moving toward your ideal future work/life situation and the realization of
your BHAG(s). Consider the timeframe for your BHAG(s). Provide a vivid description of life
“the way it will be” once your BHAG is realized.

1. Critically think about and then list out (not a narrative format) the interim steps or
milestones you have laid out for yourself that will aid you in reaching your BHAG
(you should have at least 10 to earn a rating of excellent and be referenced by time)

1. June 2024 – Teach yoga and hold Summer Solstice event

2. Research Organizational Structure of Cooperative
3. September 2024 – Teach yoga and hold Fall Equinox event
4. December 2024 – Teach yoga and hold Winter Solstice event
5. Start initial plan for organizational structure and start writing book.
6. March 2025 - Teach yoga and hold Spring Equinox event
7. June 2025 - Teach yoga and hold Summer Solstice event
8. Start networking for investors and collaborators and complete book.
9. September 2025 - Teach yoga and hold Fall Equinox event
10.Reach out to SBA to create and review business plan.

2. In addition to career-related roles, consider your other life roles in relation to your
career goals. What are the 3 most precious things you are willing to sacrifice,
besides time, to achieve your BHAG? Why?

1. Money – I am willing to invest my savings/retirement on this BHAG. I believe this

project is greatly needed in my community, as well as other communities around the
country. It means a great deal to me to be able to bring people together in a safe and fun
place.
2. Social Events – I am willing to commit to teaching yoga 2 to 3 times a week to establish
a base of clients and fill the networking pipeline.
3. I would leave the safety of my career position to start this new venture. This will be
necessary at some point to run the gallery, classes, and events.

Section 4: The one to two year plan
Using a SMART goals-based approach, as well as project planning and management skill best
practices, create a detailed project plan for at least two specific goals. At least one must be
related to your long-term BHAG. The other may be related to some other aspect of your career
development or career-life integration. Both of these goals need to be things that you are
passionate about accomplishing.
Your selected goals and SMART plan (see SMART goal information provided in the unit)
should be structured based on a one to two-year timeline. It should include specific milestones,
action items, sub-tasks as well as task-related interdependencies as applicable. With respect to
each goal, critically think about what specific things you will do in the next one to two years to
achieve these goals.

Develop a clear and detailed SMART plan, with facilitating goals and steps/actions required
to accomplish your selected goals. It should be evident, by looking at the format and structure
of your plan, that you have developed some significant skills respect to project management.
Include Gantt charts (T) or other visual project representations as you see fit, and be sure to
address your approach to tracking/measuring your progress (M).

1) What is your #1 Goal? (at least one of the following must be related to your BHAG)

(Insert your #1 Goal above and provide short answers below describing your goal in
terms of the SMART model. Finally, provide a Gantt chart using the tools provided).

a. Specific (provide details about the goal)

March 2029, I will open Lokahi Center – a collective art gallery, yoga studio, and
community center.

b. Measurable (explain how you’ll measure your progress or completion)

I will measure the progress by the advancement of my yoga and workshop
offerings and building community. I will also measure the progression of creating
the structures necessary to fulfill and to attain the collaborators and financial
investment. This will be through establishing a plan of action,

c. Attainable (explain why this is possible) This is fully attainable as it aligns with
my mission and purpose, and anything is possible. More specifically, because I
am capable of building community, and I have the knowledge to build
partnerships to purchase property. Plus, I am a good project manager and have
experience as a property manager. Plus I believe people are looking for ways to
connect and this will provide that along with the space to explore self-awareness
and express creativity. In addition, I can find investors, purchase property, and
curate gallery exhibits.

d. Relevant (explain why this matters to you) Putting all of this together will
bring me great joy. I love bringing people together. I enjoy teaching yoga and

sharing the experience with others as they learn. It is most relevant to me in that
it will provide a place where people can come together to experience creativity
and support others in their creative process.

e. Time-Based (provide the timeframe in which you’ll complete this goal)

Beginning in June 2024, I will take the following steps to work toward my goal of
opening a collective community center in March 2029.

Measurable (explain how you’ll measure your progress or completion),

Specific (provide details about the goal)

Payoff School Debt, $25,000, by December 31, 2026.

Attainable (explain why this is possible)

I believe if I plan and work hard to budget I can be sure to pay off my school debt by
December, 2026. I recognize I may need to ask for assistance from others or take money
out of my retirement. However, that is a last resort.

Relevant (explain why this matters to you)

This matters to me because I want to buy a home and property for my business. To be
sure and be as debt free is possible to achieve qualifying for these future ventures, is
important to me and vital to achieving those goals.

Time-Based (provide the timeframe in which you’ll complete this goal)

I intend to make graduated payments with a balloon payoff in December 2026.

In December 2024 I will start making payments of $250. Then 10 months later, I will
increase the payments to $500. And finally 9 months later, the payments will increase to
$1000 per month, with a ballon payoff in December 2026.
