Unit 3 Assignment:
Career Plan Template
Section 1: Creating your BHAG
Following the information in the “Good to Great Connections” PowerPoint presentation and all
of the additional information provided under the Module 4 content area, and taking your Personal
Mission Statement development efforts into consideration, carefully develop your own personal
long term BHAG (***one amazingly HUGE, your world changing goal***). The timeframe for
your BHAG is 10-25 years out, however it will depend upon your age. For example, a 55 year
old person might be closer to the 10 year BHAG, whereas a 30 year old or younger person
should be considering a BHAG 25 years out. This BHAG may be related to your overall
life/lifestyle aspirations, or it could be related to some organizational, protean, or
entrepreneurial vision you have for the future. Dig deep and and go beyond the job. That is up to
you. What it needs to be is BIG! HUGE! REALLY HAIRY! STRETCH YOURSELF! LOOK
BEYOND GRADUATE DEGREE! LOOK BEYOND A JOB! HOW WILL YOU MAKE A
DIFFERENCE IN THIS WORLD???? I RECOMMEND WE MEET TO DISCUSS IT TO
ENSURE ITS HUGENESS.

Answer the following:

1) What is your BHAG (***one amazingly HUGE, your world changing goal***)?

Become as successful in Real Estate Investment as Chip and Joanne.

2) Why is this your BHAG?

This is my BHAG because both my husband and I aspire to have our own successful

business. We have both tried in the past individually to have our own business and we

have both failed. I think we still have the desire to build our own company because we

want to be able to work for something that we feel passionate about and where we feel

like our values are the primary driver of the business. We have already invested in a

rental property; our goal is to start off small with a few rental properties and eventually

start flipping and selling them just like Chip and Joanne from HGTV.

3) How does your BHAG align with your vision statement from Module 4?

“Work for a company that aligns with my values where I can share my knowledge and

lead by example motivating others to share my values and join my vision.”

I believe my BHAG aligns with my vision because I place big importance on working for

a company that aligns with my values. The best way to ensure that as my husband and I

believe is by starting a company of our own that will be built around our shared values.

4) How does your BHAG align with your mission statement from Module 4?

“My mission is to live by my convictions letting my principles and my core values guide

my decisions and hold myself accountable.”

I believe taking on the responsibility of creating and leading a new company into success

requires a lot of conviction and strong guiding principles. This is because as a leader we

have the responsibility to create an environment that holds those values and also inspire

others to join your vision.

5) List your top five (5) obstacles in order from number 5 being least difficult and
number 1 being most difficult you need to overcome in order to obtain your BHAG
and explain the relevance of each one.

Obstacle 1 -Not enough investment capital. My husband and I will have to continue

working at our regular jobs at first to raise enough capital to invest in the business.

Obstacle 2- Since we will have to continue to work at our regular jobs there will be less

time to focus on the business. This will be very challenging because new businesses

require a lot of time dedication.

Obstacle 3- Family life. We have three small children who require our time and attention.

We do not want to sacrifice giving them a good upbringing to make our BHAG a success.

Obstacle 4- Commitment levels. I fear that as we encounter the hardship of balancing our

work and family life along with building the business our commitment level to this goal

will start to fade and that we will give up.

Obstacle 5 - Economy. The economy is not doing well right now with rising inflation,

home prices and building materials are very high. This will make it even harder for us to

get enough investment capital to help our business take off.

Section 2: Career Vision

Consider your long-term vision for your career. Respond to the following questions, and make
connections to your personal mission statement, your BHAG(s), the themes you developed in
Module 4, and the textbook/supplemental readings (as applicable).

Answer the following:

1) Analyze the type of career you want to have, in terms of an organizational career or
a protean career, make sure it is clear you understand the concepts as outlined in
the textbook. Why?

I would like to have an organizational career rather than a protean career because of

stability. As explained by Harrington, protean careers are more fit for older individuals

who do not have younger kids and can have the flexibility to make career moves that

satisfy their personal needs. I on the other hand being younger with a new family need to

have stability to help provide for my family and at the same time save enough capital to

accomplish my BHAG.

2) Analyze your career with an explanation as one that moves you up the organization
or one you develop seeking alternative career paths. If you see yourself taking an
alternative career path, which one(s) sound the most likely? Why?

I want to work for an organization where I can have some level of autonomy and some

level of responsibility. I do not necessarily want to move up for personal fulfillment in

another person’s organization. I want to do that by having my own company where I can

have my values and principles represent it. I do want to strive to make a good amount of

money to be able to achieve my BHAG and this might require me to seek a higher

position.

3) Discuss and explain if you see yourself working an alternative or flexible work
schedule/arrangement? If so, which ones and why?

As explained by Harrington 83% of women believe that schedule flexibility is key to

work satisfaction. It is very important for me to have a flexible schedule because I have

three small children that need me to be present. I need to have a flexible work schedule to

raise my children and to invest time in my BHAG. I would love to have a schedule where

I can work from home because this cuts out a lot of the extra hours we spend at work

wasting time, from the commute to the pointless meetings and small talk interactions that

take us away from our job. I believe this can cut the workday short and at the same time

allows us to get a lot more done.

Section 3: Long-Term Strategy
Develop a strategy for moving toward your ideal future work/life situation and the realization of
your BHAG(s). Consider the timeframe for your BHAG(s). Provide a vivid description of life
“the way it will be” once your BHAG is realized.

1) Critically think about and then list out (not a narrative format) the interim steps or
milestones you have laid out for yourself that will aid you in reaching your BHAG
(you should have at least 10 to earn a rating of excellent and be referenced by time)

● Find an organization where I can have a flexible work schedule even maybe work

from home by the end of 2022.

● Once I find an organization that meets those criteria, I will work hard to achieve a

position that will pay well enough to make a living and save for BHAG by 2024.

● Organize our finances. As our family continues to grow, so do our expenses such

as daycare. This is a major expense that will not allow us to save as much as we

want. I expect this to resolve once our two youngest can go to public school

which will be around 2025.

● Conduct in depth research about Real Estate by 2022.

● I would like to get my Real Estate license and take courses in Real Estate

investment. I believe I can accomplish this by 2023.

● To start a business, we need to understand the financial requirements to make the

best decisions. I estimate being able to get a financial consultant some time in

2022.

● Once we understand the financial requirement of starting a property investment

business, we can start crafting our business strategy by 2024.

● Form an LLC by 2024.

● Build a network in the Real Estate business by 2026.

● Start buying more properties by 2027

2) In addition to career-related roles, consider your other life roles in relation to your
career goals. Revisit your responses to the Identities Exercise that you completed in
Module 1 of the course. Based on your long-term strategy what are the 3 most
precious things you are willing to sacrifice, besides time, to achieve your BHAG?
Why?

Sacrifice 1: I am willing to sacrifice personal commodities and luxuries such as eating

out, buying coffee, and buying unnecessary items. I am personally willing to live

frugally. I do want my daughters to have what they need and may want, but I think we

can make some slight adjustments there. For example, I can buy them used baby clothes

instead of expensive brands since they will outgrow them quickly. I can also try to get

good deals or use coupons for groceries, especially now that prices are going up.

Sacrifice 2- I am willing to sacrifice having an ideal job for some time so that I may be

able to focus on my BHAG. I want a job that will be stable enough to sustain my family

and allow us to save for investing in our BHAG. I know for a while I will not be

completely satisfied with what I do for work, but I am willing to put that aside to reach

our goal.

Sacrifice 3- I am willing to sacrifice comfort. As a business owner you must work hard

and be willing to get out of your comfort zone. You need to be completely dedicated to

reaching your goals and at the same time balancing your personal life. This is going to be

hard so I will need to be disciplined with myself. I need to wake up early and establish a

routine and best schedule that will allow me to continue to dedicate quality time for my

family.

Section 4: The one to two year plan
Using a SMART goals-based approach, as well as project planning and management skill best
practices, create a detailed project plan for at least two specific goals. At least one must be
related to your long-term BHAG. The other may be related to some other aspect of your career
development or career-life integration. Both of these goals need to be things that you are
passionate about accomplishing.
Your selected goals and SMART plan (see SMART goal information provided in the module)
should be structured based on a one to two-year timeline. It should include specific milestones,
action items, sub-tasks as well as task-related interdependencies as applicable. With respect to
each goal, critically think about what specifically are the things you will do in the next one to
two years to achieve these goals.

Develop a clear and detailed SMART plan, with facilitating goals and steps/actions required
to accomplish your selected goals. It should be evident, by looking at the format and structure
of your plan, that you have developed some significant skills respect to project management.
Include Gantt charts (T) or other visual project representations as you see fit, and be sure to
address your approach to tracking/measuring your progress (M).

1) What is your #1 Goal? (at least one of the following must be related to your BHAG)

#1 Goal: Save $100,000 for initial business investment by 2023.

a. Specific: My goal is specific because it targets a specific factor that will enable

me to move forward with my BHAG.

b. Measurable: My goal is measurable because it mentions a specific amount that

needs to be reached.

c. Attainable: My goal is attainable because I have sat down with my husband and

planned out our budget and established that we are capable of saving this much in

2 years.

d. Relevant: My goal is relevant to my BHAG because to start a business you need

enough investment money.

8

e. Time-Based: My goal is time based because it specifies a year in which the target

needs to be delivered.

(Insert Gantt Chart)

2) What is your #2 Goal? (at least one of these must be related to your BHAG)

#2 Goal : Obtain my Real Estate License and complete a course on Real Estate
Investment by the end of 2022.

a. S- My goal is specific because it targets a specific requirement and an area that I

need to excel in, to have a successful Real Estate business.

b. M- My goal is measurable because it is quantifiable since it is a structured form

for progress.

c. A- My goal is attainable because I will be done with my studies at ASU, and I

will have that time to dedicate to other studies.

d. R- My goal is realistic because I have already proven to myself that I can dedicate

time to my studies while having a job and taking care of my family at the same

time.

e. T- My goal is time based because it provides a deadline for the completion of the

certification and studies I need.
