Unit 3 Assignment:
Career Plan Template
Section 1: Creating your BHAG
Following the information in the “Good to Great Connections” PowerPoint presentation and all
of the additional information provided under the content area, and taking your Personal Mission
Statement development efforts into consideration, carefully develop your own personal long-
term BHAG (***one amazingly HUGE, your world-changing goal***). The timeframe for your
BHAG is 10-25 years out, however, it will depend upon your age. For example, a 55-year-old
person might be closer to the 10-year BHAG, whereas a 30-year-old or younger person should be
considering a BHAG 25 years out. This BHAG may be related to your overall life/lifestyle
aspirations, or it could be related to some organizational, protean, or entrepreneurial vision you
have for the future. Dig deep and go beyond the job. That is up to you. What it needs to be is
BIG! HUGE! REALLY HAIRY! STRETCH YOURSELF! LOOK BEYOND A GRADUATE
DEGREE! LOOK BEYOND A JOB! HOW WILL YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THIS
WORLD?

Answer the following:

1) What is your BHAG (***one amazingly HUGE, your world-changing goal***)? THIS
SHOULD NOT BE A JOB BUT YOUR MISSION IN LIFE!

My BHAG is creating a food bank organization within the local community where I grew
up. Providing free groceries as well as hot meals for those in need. I would also like to
expand into personal care item packages as well, in order to provide basic health and
hygiene products.

Why is this your BHAG?

I have always had a strong passion for helping others. One aspect I have always felt was
important was food accessibility. I believe no human should ever have to go hungry. I
want to be able to provide those with the right to nourish their bodies as well as basic
health necessities to take care of themselves as needed. There are many low-income areas
in the community where I grew up. Many of my childhood friends living in these areas
and being directly impacted is the main reason why I want to provide this opportunity to
my childhood community.

2) How does your BHAG align with your vision statement from Unit 2

Vision Statement: My hope is to grow in life and in love with the day-to-day I will
create for myself. Happiness is a lifestyle in which I hope to maintain from the hard work I
put into myself and my future.

When I think of happiness, I think of creating a life for myself where I am in a position
to help others. Working hard towards my goals in life is not only focused on the benefits for
myself. I want to work hard and become stable within my life in order to continue on and
give back in any way I can. Whether that be financially, emotionally, or through my time and
knowledge. Happiness for me is being able to bring happiness to others.

3) How does your BHAG align with your mission statement from Unit 2?

Mission Statement: I believe in treating others the way you would like to be treated. As
people we are each other’s family, and we should take care of one another as such.

My BHAG aligns directly with my mission statement. I feel that as people it is our duty
to help those around us who are in need, when we are in the position to do so. No matter
how you chose to, I think there is nothing better than to be able to find a passion in
something such as volunteer, donating, coaching, and make a difference in someone’s
life. There are many people who have not been given the same opportunities as I have.
Knowing this, I want to be sure that I do my part in making even the smallest difference
possible for others.

4) List your top five (5) obstacles in order from number 5 being least difficult and
number 1 being the most difficult you need to overcome in order to obtain your
BHAG and explain the relevance of each one.

Financial Cost: While most food banks are volunteer and donation funded, there is still
the cost that comes along with finding a location, rent, meal prep, utility cost, and
additional miscellaneous costs.

Donation/Volunteer Resources: Securing and establishing partnerships with reliable

food donation and volunteer work. Finding companies and community members who are
able and willing to give their time and resources to helping the community and ensuring
there is enough donations to provide.

Storage of Goods: While the goal is to provide non-perishable items to visitors,

providing fresh meals will require the need for ingrediencies to be stored in a proper
location to avoid spoiling. There will also be a need to store the non-perishable goods as
well which will needed to be prepped for the time of distribution.

Time Management: Managing the direction and coordination of the many different
aspects that come along to running a successful food bank. Taking into account if this
will be strictly volunteer work or if a project team will need to be hired to ensure the job
is done correctly.

Marketing/Awareness of Community: Crafting a plan to ensure that those within the

community are aware of the food bank for both support and volunteers, as well as for
those who can benefit from the resources offered.

Section 2: Career Vision

Consider your long-term vision for your career. Respond to the following questions, and make
connections to your personal mission statement, your BHAG(s), the themes you developed in
Unit 2 and the textbook/supplemental readings (as applicable).

Answer the following:

1) Analyze the type of career you want to have, in terms of an organizational career or
a protean career, and make sure it is clear you understand the concepts as outlined
in the textbook. Why?

My goal is to have an organizational career within human resources. I am drawn to an

organizational career approach for a few different reasons. For one, I enjoy the stability
that an organizational career has to offer. I hope to find a job which I really enjoy and
establish a long-term career with the company. I would like to grow and move up within
the company I am at as well.

2) Analyze your career with an explanation as one that moves you up the organization
or one you develop seeking alternative career paths. If you see yourself taking an
alternative career path, which one(s) sounds the most likely? Why?

A career in human resources is directed more towards an organization. With the hopes of
one day becoming a director in human resources, my goal is to find a long-lasting career
within one company. While there are many different avenues to take in terms of human
resources, I want to become well versed in each aspect of the career field, in order to
move up in rank to ultimately reach my goal as director.

3) Discuss and explain if you see yourself working an alternative or flexible work
schedule/arrangement? If so, which ones and why?

Since I am someone who relies heavily on a set schedule, I do not see myself pursing an
alternative or flexible work schedule. While the concept is great in terms of providing
free time during different days/hours, I do prefer to schedule my free time around an
already set schedule for the weeks/months.

Section 3: Long-Term Strategy

Develop a strategy for moving toward your ideal future work/life situation and the realization of
your BHAG(s). Consider the timeframe for your BHAG(s). Provide a vivid description of life
“the way it will be” once your BHAG is realized.

1) Critically think about and then list out (not a narrative format) the interim steps or
milestones you have laid out for yourself that will aid you in reaching your BHAG

1. Graduate College
2. Secure a job within the field of human resources
3. Aggressively invest in my retirement
4. Buy a home
5. Move up to a manager position within my career
6. Become involved in a nonprofit organization/food bank in my local area
7. Build strong relationships and understanding within the nonprofit during my
volunteer time
8. Reach a director position within my career
9. Become involved within the city learning the necessary steps of opening a
food bank
10. Research and establish relationships with food donation options in order to
move forward with opening plans

2) In addition to career-related roles, consider your other life roles in relation to your
career goals. What are the 3 most precious things you are willing to sacrifice,
besides time, to achieve your BHAG? Why?

Living in a specific location: While I love my hometown, I have always had a dream to
move on and establish roots in a new city/state. As someone who has not traveled many
places, I want to explore the world and discover the possibility of experiencing a new
place to call home. However, I want to have the opportunity to give back to my
community. Establishing a food bank would be a difficult task if I was not a drivable

distance from the desired location. Having to sacrifice where I choose to buy a home is a
big possibility in order to achieve my BHAG.

Financial Cost: Specific funds will be required in order to achieve my BHAG. It will be
necessary for me to be able to provide a large amount of the funding in order to get the
project started. While I hope to buy a home and be able to provide for myself and my
family, I will have to budget and take into consideration the funds needed for my BHAG.
Financial sacrifice is something that comes with any type of large project.

Work/Life Balance: I feel very strongly about the importance of work/life balance. I
never want to become so consumed with my career, that I miss out on my life. However,
with this type of BHAG, it will take a large amount of my personal balance in order to
succeed. Giving my energy to creating a food bank for those in need, is a sacrifice I hope
to make when it is time. While it will take work to make my BHAG happen, it is work
that I find to be so worth it.

Section 4: The one to two year plan

Using a SMART goals-based approach, as well as project planning and management skill best
practices, create a detailed project plan for at least two specific goals. At least one must be
related to your long-term BHAG. The other may be related to some other aspect of your career
development or career-life integration. Both of these goals need to be things that you are
passionate about accomplishing.
Your selected goals and SMART plan (see SMART goal information provided in the unit)
should be structured based on a one to two-year timeline. It should include specific milestones,
action items, sub-tasks as well as task-related interdependencies as applicable. With respect to
each goal, critically think about what specific things you will do in the next one to two years to
achieve these goals.

Develop a clear and detailed SMART plan, with facilitating goals and steps/actions required
to accomplish your selected goals. It should be evident, by looking at the format and structure
of your plan, that you have developed some significant skills respect to project management.
Include Gantt charts (T) or other visual project representations as you see fit, and be sure to
address your approach to tracking/measuring your progress (M).

1) What is your #1 Goal? (at least one of the following must be related to your BHAG)

Goal #1: Becoming a Director of Human Resources

a. Specific: Securing a career within human resources for a company long-term in

order to grow and develop in my skills. My goal is to slowly move up in my rank

e. Time-Based: Starting early next year with entering into the human resources field,
my goal is to reach the director position in ten years’ time.

within a nonprofit organization. Working for a company which does work I am
passionate about and makes a difference in other people’s lives.

b. Measurable: Begin volunteer work for an organization I wish to work for in the
near future. Create relationships and connections with those who work directly for
the company to gain a greater understanding for the work they do and how I can
fit into their goals.

now who also have partnerships with my current place of work. There are a wide
variety of options for me to pursue in terms of volunteer work and getting my foot
in the door.
