ACTIVITY I

1. Explain the Placebo effect. Give example/situation in which this kind of

treatment may or may not be effective.
A placebo effect is also referred to as a fake treatment. It is any treatment without
medical impact with a phony pill, drink, or lotion. This treatment is just an illusion
or make-believe of people experiencing it. It is how one's mind can work and think
of the result they want to achieve from a fake treatment. Applying it to someone's
experience as an example, a person who drank a pill that he intends to use to treat
his sickness will feel that the drug he took was working, but the truth is, it is just
his thoughts saying that it worked, but it did not. To put the definition of a placebo
effect in simple terms, if you think that a pill would make you feel better, then you
would feel better, and if you think that a lotion lessens the pain, it will alleviate the
pain. A placebo effect is simply a result due to a person's expectations.

2. What is your stand on Empirical Treatment?

Empirical treatment is a kind of treatment given based on experience, without the

actual and precise knowledge of the cause or nature of disorder. It is merely based
on observations rather than on systematic logic and complete and perfect
information.
