Objectives
The purpose of this lab is to investigate battery charging and discharging using
MATLAB/Simulink.

Theory:
In a solar PV system, power is generated as long as sunlight is available. For this reason, systems in which solar
energy is the only power generation source require a way in which the energy can be stored to use later or
sometimes simultaneously with the system itself according to the demand. Because solar energy is intermittent
in nature and its generation pattern does not match the load pattern, it requires an energy storage system (ESS).
“Storage” refers to systems that absorb electricity, store it as another type of energy (chemical, thermal, or
mechanical), and then release it when needed. There are different types of ESS available such as flywheel
and pumped hydro power. But among all, electrochemical storage is suitable for a solar PV system and thermal
storage (fluids) with CSP plants. Before diving deep into the ESSs, let us first discuss the importance of storing
energy. Without storage, solar energy should either be consumed immediately or put into the public grid, or else
the energy will be lost. After sunset, the solar PV system cannot support the increased demand for electricity
due to the decreasing generation of energy in the absence of sunlight

Equipment:
- Computer with MATLAB/Simulink software

Procedures:
- Download MATLAB/Simulink model Lab8_Battery_Charger_NC_V1 from D2L
- Connect the circuit as in Figure 1.
- Simulate the circuit
- Set the Battery voltage to 48 V, rated capacity to 100 Ah, initial state of charge to
80%
- Set the source voltage to 60V
- Plot the SOC curve and under it the plot the battery voltage and the current in one
figure.
- Set the EN value to 0 so that we stopped charging and observe the situation
- Plot the SOC curve and under it the plot the battery voltage and the current in one
figure.
- Add a manual switch to control the EN constant to turn the charger ON and Off.
- Add a timer to control the charging and discharge, so that, the circuit will start
charging and after 100 second it will stop charging and start discharging
