Lesson Plan: Context Clues

Objective:

Students will be able to understand unfamiliar words using different context clues.

Prior Knowledge Assessment:

To assess students' prior knowledge about context clues, the teacher will conduct a brief discussion
using the following questions:
1. Can you define what a context clue is?
2. Have you ever encountered a word you didn't know the meaning of? How did you figure out
what it meant?
3. Can you give an example of a context clue?

Lesson Plan:

1. Introduction
● Engage students by showing a short video clip from YouTube that introduces the
concept of context clues. Use a YouTube player to display the video.
● Ask students to provide examples of situations where they encountered unfamiliar
words and how they understood their meaning.
● Write down students' responses on a whiteboard.

3. Types of Context Clues (5 mins)
● Present different types of context clues using a slide or whiteboard:
● Definition: The meaning of the word is directly provided within the sentence
or passage.
● Synonym: A word with a similar meaning is used to help understand the
unknown word.
● Antonym: A word with the opposite meaning is used to help understand the
unknown word.
● Example: Examples or descriptions are given to help understand the unknown
word.
● Provide examples for each type of context clue and ask students to identify which
type it belongs to.
4. Identifying Context Clues (6 mins)
● Display a short passage or sentence on the whiteboard that contains an unfamiliar
word.
● Model the process of identifying and using context clues to understand the meaning
of the word.
● Ask students to list the context clues they identified and how they used them to
determine the word's meaning.
● Allow students to write and draw on the whiteboard using annotations to highlight
the context clues.
