Teaching Sensory Social Routines

Goal: The student will interact and engage in an activity with an adult for up to 5 minutes without engaging in
escape-related behavior.

Instructional Procedure:
• Recognize student’s motivation and capture it.
o Either get in and play with what the student is playing with, or set up something that is even more
attractive than what the student is already doing.
• Then set up a small routine to make play predictable for the student.
• Then add to the routine slightly to teach ABA goals.
• Once a student learns variation #1, add new variations systematically.
• Be sure to sit across from the student so that the student can see your face.
• Be as animated as possible.

Example:
Student likes to drop and throw objects.
Opening: Get a bin with objects the student can drop. Start dropping the objects into the bin yourself (be
animated if necessary) to entice the student over to what you are doing. Once the student looks over, offer
some items for him to drop. (or join him in his play)
Theme: Student begins to drop items into the bin. Keep handing him more and more items/blocks to drop.
Variation 1: Move the bin to variation locations to establish the bin as a conditioned reinforcer (i.e., the objects
go in the bin, not just get thrown everywhere)
Variation 2: Instead of just giving the student “freebie” items, hold the item up and wait for eye contact. (As
soon as the student gives eye contact, give him the item)
Variation 3: Hold up 2 items and ask, “Which one do you want?” (Prompt a reach or a point + eye contact)
Variation 4: etc.

Rating Scale (0-5):

0 – Resistant to teaching 1 – 90-100% prompting 2 – prompted most of the time
3 – prompted some of the time 4 – 1st trial prompted, rest independent 5 – 100% independent
