Function of spinal cord
- Conduction
bundles of fibers passing information up and down
spinal cord
- Locomotion
repetitive, coordinated actions of several muscle

- Reflexes
involuntary, responses to stimuli (remove hand from hot stove)
involves brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves
What is multiple sclerosis ?
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a potentially
disabling disease of the brain and spinal cord
(central nervous system).

In MS, the immune system aacks the

protective sheath (myelin) that covers nerve
fibers and causes communication problems
between your brain and the rest of your body.
Eventually, the disease can cause permanent
damage or deterioration of the nerve fibers.

Diagnosis of multiple sclerosis
Magnetic resonance imaging
This test uses a strong magnetic field and radio
waves to produce detailed images of the brain and
spinal cord.

Lumbar puncture (spinal tap)

This test involves the insertion of a needle into the lower
back to collect a sample of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for
analysis.

Evoked potentials (EP)

These tests measure the electrical signals generated by the brain
in response to specific stimuli, such as flashing lights or clicking
sounds.
