THE EFFECTIVENESS OF LEARNING ENGLISH VOCABULARY

USING CANVA FOR JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

1. Background of Study

Teaching is an activity that must have techniques so that students can

understand the material. Apart from that, each level is different in teaching. Each

subject also has different techniques. As is the case for teaching English to Junior

High School students. The learning techniques that are used must be can arouse

motivation and interest in student learning. One of the techniques used by teachers is

to utilize technology that has developed. Teachers use learning media when providing

material to students. Since the COVID-19 era, students have been learning online. So

they are used to using technology for learning. From there, many learning media are

taught to students.

Even though learning is now done offline. Students and teachers still use

technology in learning. For example, students still use e-books to study and teachers

use Google Classroom to provide material. For example, learning '17' 1 Junior High

School Yogyakarta, students study and look for references using E-Books. They learn

using chrome books, which were donated by the government. Using that device,

students have used several learning media such as Quizizz, Kahoot, and Google

Classroom. Teachers provide learning media so that students do not get bored when

understanding the material or working on questions.

The research will be carried out this time to examine the effectiveness of using

learning media for students. Researchers used Canva to examine the effectiveness of
learning vocabulary for students at SMP '17' 1 Yogyakarta. Students are asked to look for

vocabulary words that they do not know the meaning of in English books. Students look

for the meaning of the vocabulary and then write it in Canva, editing it into a poster.

Learning is carried out so that students are not fed up. Because students tend to prefer

learning using technology.

2. Statement of Problem

The problem statement of the study that the writer would analyze in this research is:

Is teaching vocabulary through Canva Editing effective for Junior High School?

3. Objective of Study

The writer wants to achieve an objective of the study in this research, which is:

The author examines whether learning English vocabulary using Canva learning media is

effective for students to understand it.

4. Scope of Study

This research aims to find out whether teaching vocabulary using Canva learning media is

effective for students to understand it.

5. Hypothesis

H0: Teaching Vocabulary using Canva is not effective

H1: Teaching Vocabulary using Canva is effective

6. Method of Research

This method is carried out by using


a. Research Subject

Student class VI, VII, XI from ‘17’ 1 Junior High School.

This class consists of 20 students

Male: 15 Female: 5 students

b. Data Gathering

The writer will use pre-test and post-test data for 20 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students in

‘17’1 Junior High School.

c. Data Analysis

The writer will use the SPSS method to compare pre-test and post-test data to look for

the teaching vocabulary using Canva learning media that is effective for students to

understand it.

7. Theoretical Approach
In this study, the author uses a qualitative approach. Then, the writer uses

collaborative learning to research the effectiveness of learning vocabulary using

Canva for students. The writer also uses observation techniques to obtain the data.

8. Significance of Study
From the objective above, the significance of the study is as follows:
a. For the students, learning using the Canva learning media makes it easy not to get

bored and understand vocabulary they don't know yet. Apart from that, it can also

increase student creativity.

b. The writer wants to prove that learning to use technology can be effective.
c. The writer hopes that the result of the research can be used as a reference and

motivate readers who want to research teaching vocabulary classes.

9. Thesis Organization

The first chapter presents the introduction which consists of the background of the

study, a statement of the problem, the scope of the study, objectives, the significance

of the study, the theoretical approach, method of research, and thesis organization.

The second chapter explains the literature review, which discusses the theory used in

this research. The third explains the research methods used by the researcher. Then,

the fourth chapter is the result and discussion. Last, the fifth chapter concludes the

complete analysis and suggestions.
