Lesson 2 Introducing Game Design and Kodu Game

At the end of this module, you are expected to:


 identify the step involved in creating a computer program;
 know how to install Kudo Game Lab; and
 design and create your own game using Kudo Game Lab.

What is Kodu?

Kodu or Kodu Game Lab is a FREE Game-Creator Application Software that lets kids create
games on the PC and Xbox via a simple programming language. It is used to teach creativity,
problem solving, story telling as well as programming.
Kodu was originally called BOKU, is a programming integrated development environment
(IDE) designed by Microsoft’s FUSE labs. It has a simplified programming model that uses a gaming
controller or the basic keyboard and mouse. It includes symbolic variables, branching, loops,
number and string manipulation.
The Main bit Features of Kodu:
1. Programs are executed in 3-Dimensional simulation environment.
2. It has 3D screen or interactive editor for laying out your world.
3. It is a new visual programming system that lets you create unique behaviors interactively.

4. It has a high level, sensory paradigm consisting of a rule-based system or language.
5. It is a sharing system for swapping Worlds over Xbox live.

 Downloading and Installing Kodu

1. Kodu is free and can be downloaded from www.kodugamelab.com.


2. Click Get Kodu.
3. Select the Download button when the page directs you to the www.microsoft.com page.
4. To start the installation immediately, click Run.
5. Read and follow the instructions in installation.
6. To save the download to your computer for installation at a later time, click Save.
7. To cancel the installation, click Cancel.
System Requirements
Operating System:

 Windows 8 or 8.1 (Desktop mode)


 Windows 7
 Windows Vista
 Windows XP (latest updates required)
 A graphic card that support DirectX 9.0c and Shader Model 2.0 or higher is required
 NET Framework 3.5 or higher is required.

GETTING STARTED WITH KODU GAME LAB
To use and get started with KODU GAME LAB open your computer.
For windows 10. There are three ways to open:
A. Using the start Menu
Windows 10 has the start Menu on the left side of the desktop.
1. Click the start Menu.
2. On the Recently Added or All Apps on the start Menu, Select the KODU GAME LAB icon.
3. Wait for the program to open.
4. If the program is not anymore on the recently added, select the all apps option.
5. Search for the application starting with letter K.

B. Using the Search Box/ Cortana


1. Hover your mouse on the Cortana or Search Box.
2. Type the program “KODU GAME LAB” on the search the web and Windows Box.
3. Click the KODU GAME LAB icon that was shown on top of the search box.
4. You may also click the “My Stuff” to see the KODU GAME LAB application.

C. Using the Desktop


1. Double click the KODU GAME LAB shortcut icon on the desktop. Wait for the program to
appear.

A. Using the Icon
To start the application, click on the Kodu Game Lab icon on the desktop.

B. Using the start Button WINDOWS 7


1. Click the start button.
2. Search for all programs.
3. Find the Kodu Game Lab.
4. Click the Kodu Game Lab.

C. Using the Start Menu Windows 8
1. Open the start menu.
2. Find in application Kodu Game Lab.
3. Click Kodu Game Lab.
4. Then wait for the program to open.
D. Using the Charm Bar
1. Type the Kodu Game Lab on the search bar.
2. Select the Kodu Game Lab icon below.
3. Wait for the program to open.

How to close Kodu Game Lab


1. Click the Quit Kudo Option on the screen.
2. Another way is to select the Close button or X on the upper right corner of the screen.
