Lesson 3 Kodu Game Lab Interface

At the end of this module, you are expected to:


 identify the Kudo Game Lab interface and menus; and
 familiarize yourself with Kudo Game Lab environment using
keyboard and mouse.

Kodu is a video game building environment. The core of Kodu Game Lab is its intuitive user
interface. From the interface, you can select visual commands to control the actions of the
characters and environment in this game creator.

The Main Menu or Main Page
This is the first screen you will see after loading Kodu. It includes:
 Resume-the top menu item. It reloads the last world you had open before and start playing
the previous game.
 New World-this leads you to create your own
design or world.
 Load World-to select a new game or load a
level from a hard drive. Opens a series of
games or levels from which the user can
select.
 Community World-downloads level from the
internet.
 Options-provides the user with the ability to
change some broad level features of the
game.
 Help-get help using Kodu game lab. Offers a
quick explanation of Kodu.
 Quit Kodu-exit or leave the game.
The Tool Palette
The graphical user interface facilitates game development through the use of a collection
of tools in the Tool Menu. Open the New World to create your own video game design. Do the
procedure below:
1. Launch Kodu Game Lab.
2. Click the NEW WORLD option.
3. The environment is created using the terrain editing tool.
4. Navigate the Terrain Editing Tools.

Home Menu
The Home Menu includes options to play, edit,
and save the world. It also helps the user to load,
print and exit to Main Menu.

Run Tool
It allows you to play the video game you have
created.

Move Camera
This tool allows you to move the screen around
by manipulating or clicking the mouse cursor.
Left Mouse Button-hover the mouse to the
direction you wish to move or drag the terrain.

Right Mouse Button-allows you to orbit around the camera or the screen.
Scroll Wheel- to zoom in (scroll up) or zoom out (scroll down) the computer mouse.

The Object Tool
These options allow the users to choose characters and environmental elements such as trees,
apples, rocks, coins and clouds.
Left Mouse Button-provides you to add or select objects or more characters in your game.
Right Mouse Button-opens other options
F3 – Toggle Snap to Grid
Tab – find next character
Space – Move camera
Esc – Run or play
Here are various attributes bots and objects that you choose.

Example: Kodu, Rover and Heart Characters

Note:
You can change the color of your characters by using the color pallete choices of the screen.
 Steps in Changing the Color for Bots and Objects
There are 11 colors to choose from the color pallete located at the upper level of the screen
namely: black, gray, white (as it basic bot color ), red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet , pink
and brown.
1. Click the character you wish to change the color.
2. A special glow will appear on the character you have chosen.
3. Select a color on color pallete above by using the arrow keys from left or right.
4. Instantly the character will change its color.
5. Do the same procedure to change color of other boots and objects.

We can also change the size, height and settings of the bots using right mouse click after
selecting the bot.

The Path Tool


It creates paths using nodes. Use the following:
Left Mouse Button – drags nodes to the direction you wish to create
Right Mouse Button – adds options to add more nodes, change height, change height, change
type, or delete nodes.
Shift – Act on full path
Arrow keys – to change the color of the nodes.
Example of Paths: Using Nodes
The Ground Brush
It adds tiles or ground base for your video game. There are two ground options the
Material picker and the Brush picker.
Material Picker - choose from various material or design for the ground by clicking the arrow
keys from left to right.
Brush Picker – choose from square, hard round, linear square, linear hard round or magic brush.
Example: Smooth and level terrain

To Roughen
Creates spikey or hilly ground by using the command elements. You could choose the spikey and
hilly to be square brush, hard round brush or magic brush.
Left Mouse Button – make spikey
Scroll Wheel – smooth terrain
Right Mouse Button- make hilly

The Water Tool


This is utilized to add, remove, and tint water designs in your world. There are ten choices of
water.
Command Elements are being used like:
Left Mouse Button- raise water
Scroll Wheel - change water color
Right Mouse Button – lower water

The Delete Tool
It allows user to delete, remove or clear an object using a brush. Remember that terrains are not
included to delete in this tool.
Left Mouse Button – delete
Right Mouse Button – means nothing here, long

designs or world. Scroll the

different options for the settings.
Press Y for help option.
Saving Your World
Saving your world would keep
your video game design or new
world into your files. Follow the
directions carefully to store your
project.

How T Save Using KODU GAME LAB


1. Click the Home Menu.
2. Click Save World.
3. Type the Name of your world.
Example: GREEN WORLD
4. Write a short description or story of your world.
5. Add your name as the Creator below.
6. Choose a tag of your world. There are many choices to choose from adventure, shooting, race,
etc.
7. Then click the SAVE button.
Other options can be used like:
A-To make changes in your Video Game World.
B- To cancel and delete the descriptions in your world.
It also includes alignments for your description for left, center and right.
