The Keyboard

A keyboard is a device with buttons or keys. It emerged from the combination of a

typewriter and computer terminal technology.

You can “talk” to a computer using a keyboard. By pressing the buttons of a keyboard, you

can input data or commands to the computer. With the use of this device, you can type

characters on word processing software.

Like other devices, the keyboard has different parts that serve different functions. Let

us study these parts and functions of the keyboard.

A computer keyboard is an input device most commonly used to feed data and commands

into the computer. It consists of keys or buttons that can be manually pressed by a user.

A typical keyboard is based on the design of the typewriter keyboard with keys for the

letters, numbers, and punctuations.

1. Alpha-numeric Keypad

The term 'alpha-numeric' refers to letters and numbers. The number keys are located at

the top of the alpha-numeric keypad, while the letter keys are located in the middle of

the keyboard. The layout of the alpha numeric keypad is the same as the typewriter.

2. Numeric Keypad

This part of the keyboard is known as the numeric keyboard or 'numpad'. It has 17 keys

usually found on the far-right side of the keyboard. It is used like a calculator to enter

any numerical calculation on the computer. A numeric keypad may also come as a separate

device that can be connected to the computer.

The Num Lock key is located at the upper part of the numeric keypad is used to activate

or deactivate the keypad.

3. Arrow Keys

The arrow keys are buttons on a computer keyboard that place the cursor to a specified

direction. Cursor keys are used to move the blinking line or the cursor that you can see in

the monitor upwards, downwards, left, and right directions.

4. Function Keys

The function keys or F-keys are located on the top of the keyboard and labelled F1

through F12. These keys serve as shortcuts and perform special functions such as saving

files, printing, or refreshing a page. The functions of these keys differ by the operating

system or software program that you use. They may be combined with the Alt, Ctrl, and

Shift keys.

4|Page
5. Special Keys

Special keys are used to perform special task like; spacebar used to add space in each

word, CapsLock used to capitalize the letter, backspace key used to delete one character

to the left, etc.

Example of Special Keys

 Enter

 Tab

 Shift

 Spacebar

 Delete

 Backspace

 Control

 Alt

Lesson 2: Computer Mouse

Specific Learning Objectives

The learners shall be able to:

 Define what is Computer Mouse

 Explain the function of each part of the computer mouse

 Show how to use the computer mouse properly

Trace the computer mouse and color the picture.

1. What is the used of the computer mouse?

2. What are the three buttons of computer mouse?

3. What do you call the arrow on the screen?

The Computer Mouse

Like a keyboard, the mouse is also an input device of the computer. It is the pointing

device used to move the cursor around the screen.

The mouse is a hand-operated device that is connected to the computer by a cable. A

mouse needs a mouse pad in able to function accurately.

Types of Computer Mouse

Over the years, we have witnessed the revolution in computer technologies Nowadays,
there's already o variety of mouse available in the market which you can choose depending on
your personal choice.

A. Optical mouse
This is an advanced type of mouse that uses a Light Emitting Diode (LED),
optoelectronic sensor, and a digital signal processor to detect motion.

11 | P a g e
B. Cordless Mouse
This mouse is connected to the computer without the use of wires. It uses a
wireless technology like Bluetooth or infrared radio waves. The cordless mouse uses USB
receiver that is plugged into the computer to receive signals from the cordless mouse. It
also needs batteries to work.

How to Use the Computer Mouse Properly

Using the mouse is one of the few basic skills we need to master for us to operate a
computer properly. To practice this skill, here are some basic steps on how to operate the
mouse. This will help you navigate the computer easily and efficiently.

Four Basic Ways for Using Computer Mouse

12 | P a g e
1. Pointing
When we point, we simply place the arrow or mouse pointer on the icon or item on
the screen.

2. Dragging
This is used for moving a character to other position by selecting a character and
holding the left mouse button while moving the pointer on the screen.

3. Clicking
Clicking is used to select and deselect a character on the screen. To do clicking,
choose an icon and press the left button once without moving the mouse. Do it again once
to deselect an item.

4. Double Clicking
This action take place when you want to open a program. To do this, choose a
program you want to open and then press the left mouse button twice and rapidly using
your index finger.

Lesson 3: Printer

17 | P a g e
Specific Learning Objectives

The learners shall be able to:

 Define what is Printer

 Explain the different type of printer

Look at the puzzle below, can you find the printer on the puzzle? Color it.

Printer

18 | P a g e
The printer is an output device that reads the data stored on a computer to produce a

hard copy of your work. It is one of the most popular computer peripherals commonly used to

print text and pictures on paper. It can produce multiple printouts of your data depending on

your desired number of copies.

Types of Printer

1. Laser Printer

This printer produces high quality printouts of text and graphics. It can print

faster compared to other printers with the use of a non-impact photocopier technology.

Laser printers use a laser beam that draws the document on a drum using

electrical charges. After the drum is charged, it is rolled in the toner that contains a

powdered type of ink The toner stays to the charged image on the drumn. The toner is

transferred and fused to the paper with heat and pressure. After the document is

printed, the electrical charge is removed from the drum and the excess toner is

collected.

2. Inkjet Printer

The inkjet printer is another type of printer that produces hard copy by spraying

ink onto paper. These printers have a print head that has several tiny nozzles called jets
19 | P a g e
As the paper moves past the print head, the nozzles spray ink forming the characters and

images on paper.

3. Dot Matrix Printer

A dot matrix printer is a type of printer which uses a print head with pins that

pass through an ink ribbon to print on paper. These printers are considered outdated, as

20 | P a g e
they are expensive and unable to create high-quality printouts. However, dot matrix

printers use impact printing which are very useful in printing multi-part forms that need

carbon copying.
