The desktop

The desktop is the main screen area that you see after you turn on your
computer and log on to Windows. Like the top of an actual desk, it serves as a surface
for your work. When you open programs or folders, they appear on the desktop. You
can also put things on the desktop, such as files and folders, and arrange them
however you want.

When I open programs where does my desktop go?

Programs run on top of the desktop then

the desktop itself will be partially hidden but it’s
still there. To see the whole desktop without
closing any of your program or windows just

The purpose of printer drivers is to allow applications to do printing without being
aware of the technical details of each printer model. While data for softcopy can be
saved in __________ devices.

Elements of Computer System

Every computer system has the following three basic components, Input,
Central processing, and output unit. Input unit helps users enter data and
commands into a computer system. After receiving data and commands from
users, a computer system now must process it according to the instructions
provided. Then it is converted into a format which humans can understand and
finally, the output units display this data to users.

5
How Does Printer Work?
Printers work by converting digital images and text into physical copies. They do
this using a driver or specialized software that has been designed to convert the file
into a language that the printer can understand. The image or text is then recreated
on to the page using a series of miniscule dots. Let’s look at the history that came
before the advent of the modern printer.

Requirements for Internet Search

What is a WWW-browser?

World Wide Web (www) was invented by Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee in
1989. This contains vast amounts of interlinked and stored information
collected from all over the world which can be retrieved quickly and easily.
These browsers help the users to easily access and recover data on the Internet.
Some examples of browsers include Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet
Explorer, Opera, Apple Safari and Microsoft Edge.

There are different ways to launch a browser:

• In a Laptop or Personal Computer

• Double-click the browser icon using a mouse or a touch pad.
• Click the browser icon then press enter.
• In mobile phones, tablet, or other touch-screen devices
• Just tap the browser icon once.

By launching any of these browsers, everyone can search for the information
that they need quickly and easily.

UNIFORM RESOURCE LOCATOR (URL)

Below is an example of the URL address once you look at the address bar of the
browser:

Basic Structure of the Uniform Resource Locator (URL)

9
To track down exactly the webpage, website, or file that you need, you must
follow the proper format in providing the URL address. Below is the basic
structure of a URL address and their functions:

https://www.e-tesda.gov.ph/course/index.php?categoryid=16

Scheme Name Host Name Path Query String

1. Scheme Name –The first part of the URL Address which identifies the protocol
to access the resource on the Internet. It can be HTTP (Hypertext Transfer
Protocol) or HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure). This is followed by a
colon and two forward slashes (://).
2. Host Name – sometimes called domain name. This determines the location
that contains the resource through which the server refers to in providing its
services.
3. Path or File - this is the specific location or resource in the host that the user
wants to access.
4. Query String – This allows the user the pass the information or data to and
from the website by just adding information at the end of a URL. This contains
any word that follows a question mark (?).

Search Engine

A Search Engine is a web-based tool intended to perform web search or internet

search on the World Wide Web (WWW). Popular examples of search engines are
Google, Bing and Yahoo. The search results are often shown in a line of results
which is called the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs).

Bookmark

Bookmark or Electronic Bookmark in the digital world is somehow similar to the

traditional bookmark that we used when it comes to its purpose. This is also
called favorites in some browsers which links the user to a specific website that is
saved electronically in a browser that facilitates quick access to the web page.
There are two ways to bookmark a web page:

1 Using your mouse, click the icon (or something similar that can be seen on
the upper left corner of the window screen) then, rename the web page that you
bookmark if you want to, then click done.
2 Press Ctrl+D on the keyboard, rename the web page then click done. Most
browsers use this as a shortcut key to bookmark a webpage.

Link

A link is short for hyperlink which consists of a word or group of words that serve
as a cross reference to data or other files on the computer that the user may follow
by clicking or tapping. It is often represented in color blue then turns violet once
clicked or tapped. This is a simple way to navigate or be directed in between pages
on the web.

statement. Answers may be more than one (1) word.

1. The search results are often shown in a line of results which is called the
____________________.
2. Press _____________________________ on the keyboard. Most browsers use this
as a shortcut key to bookmark a webpage.
3. A Link that is short for _____________________________ which consists of a word
or group of words that serve as a cross reference to data or other files on the
computer that the user may follow by clicking or tapping.
4. A _____________________________ is a web-based tool intended to perform web
search or internet search on the World Wide Web (WWW).
5. The first part of the URL Address which identifies the protocol to access the
resource on the Internet is the _____________________________.

12
Because of the new normal on how people work or study nowadays, your parents
bought a computer. Then you expect that you could use it for years. But little did
you know, your computer might behave a little weird, sometimes might show choppy
images, frustrating pop-ups and tremendously slow disk access. Gradually, your
computer might crash and all your data will be lost.

One thing you have probably missed out is the need for system maintenance.
The basic routine maintenance comprises of the 3 basic processes:
1. Data Backup
2. Malware Maintenance
3. Disk or File System Maintenance

Let us address each of the processes in detail so that you can better understand
how you can apply them in your system to extend its durability.

▪ DATA BACKUP - Backing up a file means creating or saving a copy of a data

so that in case anything happens you have a spare copy. There are different
backup methods you can use such as:
➢ USB stick or Flash Drive
➢ External Hard Drive
➢ Cloud Storage
➢ Network Attached Storage
➢ Printing

▪ MALWARE MAINTENANCE - Malware refers to any kind of malicious codes,

objects or content that invades your computer, resulting in damage and
causing your system to act in an unwanted manner.
Examples of Malwares are:
➢ Computer Viruses such as the ILOVEYOU virus
➢ Trojan Horses
➢ Spyware
➢ Worms
➢ Spam

▪ DISK MAINTENANCE - Your system performance will decrease when the

amount of data in your hard disk starts to grow. In such cases, uninstall any
undesirable software and clean up your disk using the Disk Cleanup Window.
To delete temporary files using Windows 10:
1. In the search box on the taskbar, type disk cleanup, and select Disk
Cleanup from the list of results.
2. Select the drive you want to clean up, and then select OK.
3. Under Files to delete, select the file types to get rid of. To get a description of
the file type, select it.
4. Select OK.

13
If you need to free up more space, you can also delete system files:
1. In Disk Cleanup, select Clean up system files.
2. Select the file types to get rid of. To get a description of the file type,
select it.
3. Select OK.
Note: If you notice that the Temp folder fills up quickly after running Disk
Cleanup, see low disk space error due to a full Temp folder.

Directions: Write an essay about the importance of data Backup, and why it’s
necessary during this time of what we call the NEW NORMAL. Give also
your own title for the essay (minimum of 200 words).

Lesson Performing Mensuration and

3 Calculation (PMC)
Week 6-7

A computer’s specification directly affects its performance and price point.

Being able to access and check a computer’s specification enables a user to
determine the capabilities and purpose of a computer.

How are Computer Components Measured?

Each computer component is measured using different aspects and units

of measurement. These measurements are collectively called as computer
specifications.

1. Memory

When the information is kept in memory, the CPU can access it much more
quickly. As what you have learned in your previous lessons, computer memory is
categorized into ROM (Read-Only Memory) and RAM (Random-Access-Memory).
ROM store data permanently and RAM store data temporarily. Computer memory
and storage capacity is often measured in megabytes (MB) and gigabytes (GB).

Unit Abbreviation Storage Sample

Bit B Binary 1 or 0
Digit
Byte B 8 bits Holds 1 letter
Kilobyte KB 1024 bytes A word document file is usually a
couple of hundred KB
Megabyte MB 1024 KB Average mp3 file – 3MB
Gigabyte GB 1024 MB Standard Definition Movie – 1 to 3 GB
Terabyte TB 1024 GB Newer storage drives are often 1 TB
and up.

16
2. Storage Capacity
The most used storage devices in computers nowadays are hard disk drives
(HDD) and the faster but more expensive solid-state drives (SSD). Their capacity
is measured in gigabytes (GB) and terabytes (TB).
Hard disk drives (HDD) are storage devices that use rotating magnetic disk to
read and write data. Its operating speed is affected by two key factors; the
rotational velocity of the disk itself and the interface used. Three types of interface
exist: Serial Advance Technology Attachment (SATA), which is the most modern
and now pretty much the norm on new PCs; Integrated Device Electronics (IDE)
(also known as UDMA), which is a slower and older form of interface, and finally
SCSI, which happens to be the oldest but in it most modern variant is still the
fastest disk interface standard.

3. Processor/Central Processing Unit (CPU)

A processor’s performance is determined by many factors. Some examples are

its clock speed, its architecture, cache size and front side bus (FSB) speed. A
CPU's clock speed represents how many cycles per second it can execute. Clock
speed is also referred to as clock rate, PC frequency and CPU frequency. This is
measured in gigahertz, which refers to billions of pulses per second and is
abbreviated as GHz. The higher the frequency of a CPU, the more cycles of data
processing is done.

4. Video/Graphics Card

A computer's graphics system determines how well it can work with visual
output. Graphics systems can either be integrated into a computer's motherboard,
or plugged into the motherboard as a separate "video card". Graphics systems
integrated into the motherboard (also known as "onboard graphics") are now quite
powerful, and sufficient for handling the requirements of most software
applications aside from games playing, 3D modeling, and some forms of video
editing.

How to Obtain Correct Computer Specifications?

Now that you have already learned the different components that makes up a
computer specification, you also learn how to obtain the correct specifications of your
computer. Here are some ways how to obtain your computer’s specifications.

1. Check on product label – most computer

components have their specifications written
on the package or product label. Most
storage drive would have their storage
capacities written on the packaging or sticker
on the computer component.

A RAM card with indicated capacity rated in gigabytes (GB)

17
2. Check the computer system settings – System settings of most computers have
an automatic detection mechanism of the specifications of the components plug in
them. Here are some ways you can access a computer’s specification running
windows and android.

a. Windows - You can access the

computer’s main specifications by
launching the Windows Task Manager by
pressing ctrl+alt+delete, then select Task
Manager and go to performance tab. You
can now select each component and view
their specifications.
b. Android – On most android
computers, the system specifications can
be found on the system settings, then press
about phone.

3. Check the manufacturer’s website – if

you still cannot find the specification of a
certain computer component using the
above-mentioned ways, you can search for
it using the internet by going to the
manufacturer’s website.

Directions: Read each question carefully and write your answer on a separate sheet.
1. Using your own words how would you describe computer specifications? (2
points)
2. What are the benefits of being able to measure different computer
components? (2 points)
3. What are the methods to determine the specification of your computer system?
Explain briefly the steps in each method. (6 points)

A schematic defined as a picture that shows something in a simple way, using
symbols. A schematic diagram is a picture that represents the components of a
process, device, or other object using abstract, often standardized symbols and
lines.
Mainly, schematic diagram popular in electronics however, it is also used in
manufacturing, chemistry and in business.

The key of quality electronic diagram is its look and how easy it is to
understand. To accomplish this, you need to follow the Do’s and Don’ts in lay
outing electronic diagram.

Value or Part Number

For components such as resistors and capacitors, the value given in ohms
(for resistors) and microfarads (for capacitors). Therefore, a 470 Ω resistor would
have the number 470 next to it, and a 100-μF capacitor would have the number
100 next to it.
Suffix Letters
Suffix letters used to recognize separate parts of a unit upon a diagram when
such components appear as a single and enclosed unit.

21
Connecting Lines
Lines connecting symbols and other parts on a diagram should draw either
horizontally or vertically, whenever possible.
Interrupted Lines
Connecting lines whether single or in a group, may interrupted when a diagram
does not provide for a continuation of these lines to their destination.
Line Thickness
As with other types of diagrams, a schedule of line weights or line conventions
used in drawing electrical and electronics diagrams.
