INTRODUCTION

Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis. With the sheer length of the word alone, these

45 English words pertaining to a lung disease grabs the attention of non-English speakers. The English
language is undoubtedly one of the most used dialects in the whole world (Statista Research
Department, 2022). With that in mind, the Philippine Education system has implemented it as one of its
major subjects throughout K-12 for the sake of being globally competitive. The Philippine education
system has been using English as a medium of instruction from elementary to university level for
decades (Gonzalez, 2003). With the year 2023 third quarter DVBNHS exam results released; students will
get to see the majority of how well they have performed this semester.

Like all data, not all have the same results. They are diverse in outcomes signifying the different
capabilities of each student in DVBNHS. This study aims to pinpoint why most students perform the way
they carry out in the particular subject. Why is it that most learners ace the English language and the
rest do not? Some students are even indifferent— in between the lines signifying average results.
Surprisingly, Filipinos are very good with the English dialect. Given that we are colonized by the
Americans, it is natural to be well acquainted with the English language. May it be through ears or
through tongue, the dialect is spread all throughout the Philippines. However, this does not mean that
all Filipinos are adept in speaking English. . A study made by Aina, et. al. (2015) concluded that the
proficiency in English language is strongly related to students’ academic performance in science and
technical education. There are many factors that affect their learning such as their natural upbringing,
financial stature, and access to education.

In summary, English is often a Filipinos' second language. It is one of the most easily accessed
and learned languages throughout the country. This could be backed up with the evidence of it being a
major subject in the Philippines' education system, as well as multiple media that are made and
consumed for the public. According to a study conducted by Mierlan B. (2019), students are more
motivated to try and get better at a subject when they already have pre-requisite knowledge that serve
their endeavors. This could be compared to today's education system where a concept is easier to grasp
if the criteria of interest paired with existing knowledge are satisfied. However, it is later shown that not
all (Filipinos) could speak the language due to socioeconomic and financial standing. Hence, some
negative exam results.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study caters to those in the field of education looking to find the root of why most
students prefer or dislike the subject. To put it bluntly, it is for learners and educators to see the
many factors that benefit proper evaluation in students' education. To be more specific, this
study could benefit teachers that teach the language, and implement modified techniques in
teaching to help alleviate the failing marks. With compilations of test marks, this study will be
able to compare the factors of how students function well with different ways of coordinating
their comprehension of the English language. To put it simply, the way of understanding the
very root of a concept and how it will affect the students of Disiplina Village Bignay National
High School produce a much more pleasant outcome in test results.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Benardo (2023) of the European Journal of Psychology of Education shows the little, but
significant effects of how the role of the students’ socioeconomic status affect how resources in
the learning environment enable (or constrain) the role of growth mindset in improving learning
outcomes. A journal entry entitled “Growth mindset and reading proficiency of ESL learners:
examining the role of students’ socioeconomic status using PISA 2018 Philippine data”
concluded that the data from 6,766 Filipino students say that Socioeconomic Status (SES)
moderated the relationship between growth mindset and reading proficiency. In the same way
Sansan, et al. (2022) observed the way of learning through constructivism, it has shown that this
has given students special features and advantages when studying English. In order to
substantiate the notion that incorporating multimedia and constructivism theory improves
students' overall English learning experiences, this study examines a wide range of sources.
While the authors of this study believed it would aid students in learning English more
effectively, they also hoped to provide teachers with a more effective strategy to help them cut
back on class time. With enough data and research, these two studies proved that the language
is easily digested when put up with a compatible teaching method with certain circumstances.
Another Qualitative study was taken by TESOL International Journal entitled “Metacognition in
the senior high school in one national high school in the Philippines” (Ventayen et al., 2021) for
the aim to understand the prevailing conditions of metacognition and its implication in Basic
Education and to initiate possible “insertion” to achieve successful learning. After multiple tests,
the results show that The Kto12 Program is not positioned for Academics but instead on
upskilling of competencies in the different Qualifications and learners coming from Technical
Vocation Education failed the expected scores in English core metacognition.

Speaking of factors affecting English fluency and education, Aparace (2023) conducted
a study about analyzing the impacts of code-switching on foreign language classroom anxiety
and English language problems through path analysis where results from three private schools
in Davao yields that showed that the association between English language issues and anxiety
in foreign language classrooms was not mediated by code-switching. The study's conclusions
thus showed that the association between English language issues and foreign language
classroom anxiety was not eliminated nor considerably diminished by the usage of code-
switching. This study made a significant contribution to the continuing global discussion about
whether code switching benefits or harms English language learners. In correspondence to this,
Teachers' evaluation of an English curriculum guide in the Philippines (Dela Rosa & Lintao,
2018) from University of Santo Tomas emphasized the importance of the English curriculum
guide for the 10th grade. With joint studies and data, they came to the conclusion with the
important part of the curriculum-development process rests on curriculum evaluation. And as
such, the process of evaluating the effectiveness and appropriateness of curriculum materials
should form part of reshaping and refining the curriculum.

B. Foreign Literature/Studies

A study conducted by Bo, et al., entitled “Revisiting English Language Proficiency and Its
Impact on the Academic Performance of Domestic University Students in Singapore” (2023)
explored the relationship among university students' previous academic experience, English

7
DISIPLINA VILLAGE BIGNAY NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Sitio Ibaba St., Disiplina Village Bignay Valenzuela City

language proficiency, and their current academic performance. They have come to the
conclusion with data samples from 514 Singaporean students that students' proficiency scores
significantly predicted their current grade point average (GPA) with their prior academic
performance being controlled. In relation to this, the way of proficiency stems from how students
deal with information being handed out to them. Another study of Bai & Wang (2023) in which
they examine the role of growth mindset, self-efficacy, and intrinsic value in self-regulated
learning (SRL) and English language learning achievements in Hong Kong primary school
students, they have found suggestions that growth mindset was a stronger predictor of self-
regulated learning (SRL) than self-efficacy and intrinsic value. These two studies show that
there is a correlation between two factors—the environment of the learners and their internal
flow of comprehension.

Regarding the results of examinations between students, Kaur, et al. (2016) created a
study between the evolution of Thailand’s’ English education policy from its inception to the
present. Findings show that despite their best efforts, there are still a number of factors at play
in the country's poor English language development. Among these are sociocultural hindrances
and policy-related difficulties that impede or prevent the development of English in the nation. In
relation to that, The Test review of the English public examination at the secondary level in
Bangladesh (Sultana, 2018) was meant to evaluate the Secondary School Certificate (SSC),
which is taken at the end of Grade 10 in mainstream education in the country Bangladesh. Her
study concluded that the SSC fails to address the need for English language teaching and
learning. The way the examination is set is only helpful in getting the high score but ineffective
in measuring the communicative purpose of the English language teaching or students’ English
proficiency in general.

Perception also plays a vital role in English education. A study from Qi (2016) entitled
“The Importance of English in Primary School Education in China: Perceptions of Students”
raises questions about the real status of English in primary school education and whether it is
really perceived as important. Findings show the positive attitudes of children toward English
education and their support for the early introduction of English; however, some feel that English
is not as important as Chinese and mathematics. This paper concludes by considering the
implications for English education in primary schools in China and other Asian countries.

RESEARCH DESIGN

8
DISIPLINA VILLAGE BIGNAY NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Sitio Ibaba St., Disiplina Village Bignay Valenzuela City

The study employed a quantitative descriptive research design. In this study, with the
purpose to seek out the majority of students who have failed and passed the English
examinations of Disiplina Village Bignay National High School in Section Confucius of 3rd
Quarter— the practice of describing the studies’ findings is shown and described without directly
influencing the data and results. With the Grade 10 student marks, they are processed into a
table containing the analysis of the frequencies regarding the students' results with the
implication of the class exam average.

POPULATION SAMPLE

The classification of sampling that was conducted in this study was purposive sampling.
Purposive sampling is widely used in qualitative research for the identification and selection of
information-rich cases related to the phenomenon of interest. In the audience of Grade 10, their
results are sampled all in the purpose of their characteristics needed in the study. The said
characteristics are as follows: bonafide student of Disiplina Village Bignay National High School,
Grade 10, and from the section Confucius. The main audience of this study are a specific
section— the students of Grade 10 Confucius in Disiplina Village Bignay National High School.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

The data was taken from Ms. Michelle Jamon on the date of June 15, 2023. The
permission slip attached above is proof along with the signature of approval. Ms. Michelle
Jamon holds both the test marks and the class for the major subject English in Disiplina Village
Bignay National High School for S.Y 2022—2023.

PRESENTATION OF DATA

There are a total of 48 students who have taken the 3rd Quarters' English exam. The
highest possible attainable score of the exam is 50 points. For the sake of unbiased and

balanceable processing, each test marks have been added an extra 50 points to make the
grand total of 100 points. The data gathered are presented as followed:

ANALYSIS OF DATA

Using the data presented above, we can conclude that the average (mean) score of
Grade 10 section Confucius is 76 points. This can be proven true by using the formula of getting
the average (mean) of the scores by dividing the sum of fx (Σfx) by the total of students
partaking in the exam (N). For this instance, the total of examinees are 48 students whereas the
total of the fx (Σfx) is precisely 3,635. Dividing the two leaves us with the number 76– hence is
stated the average. Diving deeper into the knowledge of the question “how many students

10
DISIPLINA VILLAGE BIGNAY NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Sitio Ibaba St., Disiplina Village Bignay Valenzuela City

passed the S.Y. 2022–2023 English examinations?”. The procedure is as follows: Attaining the
75th percentile allows us to see the students that passed with scores that are 84 above and so
83 below. By using the formula P75 = LB + (KN/100 - cfb) interval, we can conclude that there
are a total of 82.08% of students (36 students) that got the mark of 83 points below. On the
contrary, there are a total of 25% (12 students) that got 84 points above, passing the exam. On
the other hand, if we were curious to find out what were the percentile ranks at which the Grade
10 students fail and pass the exam as an entirety, we will come to a very quick summary by
using the formula in finding the 74th percentile rank of our data. P74= [100/N] [(P - LB) f / interval
+ cfb when substituted, give us the answer of 41.36%. In conclusion to this equation, we have
41.36% (20 students) who have failed the exam, whereas the remaining 58.64% (28 students)
passed this school year's 3rd quarter English exam.

INTERPRETATION OF DATA

To interpret and further summarize with less details from our previous data analysis, we
can say that the majority of Disiplinians in section Confucius have done well in their 3rd Quarter
English exam. To put it simply, no more than 28 students scored lower than the general failing
mark. This aims to prove that the 58% handles the subject really well enough to get outstanding
marks, not forgetting to mention the other 41% getting below average points,

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

To offer an abrupt summary from the data we have sampled from Grade 10 Section
Confucius, other researchers can observe that the highest possible mark from the exam is 50
points. Adding an additional 50 for unbiased data processing, the grand total of the exam would
be 100 points. There was a total of 48 examinees that took the test that day. As the results
come out, we can see that no more than 83% of students scored lower than 83 points. On the
other hand, the remaining 25% got 84 points above, having high enough marks. Using formulas
that yield answers to the curious question of “how many students in Grade 10 Confucius failed

11
DISIPLINA VILLAGE BIGNAY NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Sitio Ibaba St., Disiplina Village Bignay Valenzuela City

and how many passed this 3rd Quarters English exam?”, this study has concluded that there is
a total of 58.64% (28 students) that passed and a total 41.36% (20 students) who have failed.

CONCLUSION

This study has concluded that more than half of the Students of Disiplina Village Bignay
National High School have achieved good marks for their S.Y. 2022–2023 3rd Quarter exam. It
is well known that English is undoubtedly one of the most widely spoken dialects right next to
Mandarin. Among the entirety of the whole world, the English language is often spoken as a
persons’ second language in turn of historic events recorded all throughout the years. Although
there are some learners that have fallen below the passing marks, the current results of today's
school year are not to be looked down upon. With sufficient data provided, enough research has
determined that exactly 58.64% (28 students) passed this school year's 3rd quarter English
exam. With 36 students scoring 84 points below, and the remaining 12 students 84 above, it is
seen that the section has learned well enough from the subject that shows evidently in their
current test results. All in all, the average score of Grade 10 Section Confucius is 76 points out
of a total 100.

RECOMMENDATIONS

There are definitely more areas needed to be explored when evaluating individuals’
language proficiency. One quarter is not enough to fully evaluate students’ and teachers’ ways
of handling the English language. That being said– as a recommendation, we must also explore
and compare the data brought back during the previous quarters. Having seen all sufficient
data, other researchers could properly evaluate that performance of the students in a span of a
year. Acknowledging the different factors helps in determining performance, and acceptance of
trial and error is always a mandatory experience in any branch of research. Maintaining
objective is always a key to an unbiased performance evaluation, and should always be
practiced in academic writings regarding facts and evidence.
