CHAPTER 2

Foreign

According to Christy Whitten et al.( Sandra Labby) of 2019 that discovering ways to improve
student academic performance is a common challenge in the modern classroom. This research study
examined the reading habits of sixty-five high school juniors, aged fifteen to seventeen years, at a
rural Southeast Texas high school. It was theorized that students who engaged in reading self-selected
literature for pleasure would average higher grades in English, mathematics, science, and history than
their non-reading peers.

According to chapin hall at the University of chicago of 2010 that Learning to read is one of the
most important skills in modern society. Not only does reading serve as the major foundational skill
for school-based learning, but reading ability is strongly related to opportunities for academic and
vocational success. For children, a critical transition takes place during elementary school: until the
end of third grade, most students are learning to read. Beginning in fourth grade, however, students
begin reading to learn. 1 Students who are not reading at grade level by third grade begin having
difficulty comprehending the written material that is a central part of the educational process in the
grades that follow. Meeting increased educational demands becomes more difficult for students who
struggle to read.

LOCAL

Reading is a fundamental skill that is crucial for academic success. The impact of having time to
read on the academic performance of Grade 9 students of SNHS has been the subject of several
studies.

According to Merga et.al (Roni) of 2020 found that students who had more time to read for
pleasure had better academic outcomes, including higher grades in English and overall GPA. The
study also found that students who read for pleasure had better vocabulary, writing skills, and critical
thinking abilities.
when students have access to books and time to read, they are more likely to develop a love for
reading and become more engaged in their academic work. The study also found that students who
read for pleasure have higher levels of motivation, stronger reading skills, and better academic
achievement. By Guthrie,et.al (Wigfield,) of 2012
