JOINED IED GROUP IN 2010. Summer courses are divided in two levels:

Introductory: preparatory courses designed

for students with no prior knowledge or experience
in the discipline.

Intermediate: courses intended for students who

have competences or basic professional expertise
in the area of study and are interested in developing
their skills and professional portfolios.

its long tradition in the textile production and its
district specialised in the production of wooden and
metal furniture, and furnishing accessories.

perfect destination for a memorable summer
experience. You will easily get inspired while strolling
through its tiny streets, with its old buildings and the
Cathedral, and artisanal crafts, and while living the

WHO IS THE COURSE AIMED AT?

The course is open to high school graduates in artistic

with at least one year in the architecture, interior or
product design disciplines, wishing to approach the
furniture design field and the most recent techniques
of digital fabrication.
The high school diploma, an upper-intermediate level
of English, a good knowledge of 3D CAD software like
Rhinoceros and a portfolio of (architecture, interior or
product design) projects are necessary in order to be
admitted.
METHODOLOGY
AND STRUCTURE
The course consists in an immediate approach to
design and practical training in the laboratory, where,
under the guidance of experienced teachers, you
will experiment with traditional and digital tools,
and techniques for prototyping. The theoretical
notions are addressed during the practical training,
that will take place in the fablab: an innovative
structure with 3D printings, a place of research,
design and creation of prototypes.

The visits to places of interests will be an active

learning experience that serves both to complete the
knowledge and skills acquired in class, as well as a
cultural enrichment and inspirational source for
your projects.

PROGRAMME
Introduction to Computational Design and
Parametric Design
Through a serie of theoretical lessons and through
the analysis of different case studies you will become
aware of the latest design methods applied in the
fields of design,architecture and furniture.
Trends, scenario and context analysis. Launch and
study of the brief.
Digital Design Tools Applied to Design
The different workshops proposed during the course
allows you to acquire the fundamentals of 3D
modeling with Rhino and Grasshopper, which are the
main tools for the development of the projects. Once
the projects are developed, you and your classmates
will be able to evaluate your own works and visualize
them with virtual reality software, such as Enscape
and Unreal Engine.
Production
This part of the course provides you with the
necessary tools for the realization of the projects.
You will get familiar with the additive manufacturing
(3D printing) and subtractive manufacturing (CAM
and laser cut) and acquire the techniques and
practices of assembly and construction of temporary
structures.
LESSON PLAN

of studio space, guest speakers, site visits etc.
All visits will be announced in detail during the first
day of class. They may occur outside of the regularly
scheduled class time. Your participation is mandatory.
WEEK ONE
RESEARCH, ANALISYS AND DESIGN.
DAY 1
Orientation and introduction to the course

Rhino Crash course, interface, principles and
modeling.
Site visit to Villa Panza Varese
Individual development of a project.
3D abstract model inspired by the design or artistic
sources identified during the 1st and 2nd day of the
course.

First project presentation.
Defining teams.
Architecture and parametric design.
DAY 4
Site visit to Villa Sucota Como.
Digital Fabrication.
Development of the second project (team work).
Designing a “summer shelter” to place in Villa Sucota
garden.
DAY 5
Development and presentation of the second project.
WEEK TWO
PROTOTYPING
DAY 6
Workshop using woodworking tools.
Development of the third project.
Prototype realization.
 DAY 7
Revision and prototype evaluation.
Development of the fourth project.
Final project: iteration of the first concept and the
evaluation of strengths and weaknesses of the first
prototype.
DAY 8
Development of the fourth project.
Digital/Analog balance .
DAY 9
Development.
DAY 10
Final presentation.
Debriefing and opening party of the projects
exhibition in the gardens of Villa Sucota.
COURSE MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES
Required materials for class workshops will
be provided. All personal printing is at your expenses.
We encourage you to bring your own laptop
and digital camera in order to work independently.
Our location is equipped with a wide range of learning
materials and qualified friendly staff on hand to
support you.

Francesco Pusterla
Architect and Furniture Design Course Coordinator
at Accademia di Belle Arti Aldo Galli since 2017.
In 2016 he became a founding member of "Bikini art
Residency", a young art program based in Cernobbio,
Italy.
He began his career as an Architect in New York in
2008, where he worked for Asymptote Architecture.
This experience formed his interest in digital
architecture, which he continued to develop with
NAU in Zurich. After these international experiences
he returned to Italy and founded R.P.Arch., an
architecture studio focused on the use of renewable
materials and energy. Since then he has been actively
developing projects in Italy and Switzerland.
He regularly holds conferences and workshops on
innovation and new technologies in various
educational institutions, including the University of
Arts and Applied Sciences of Southern Switzerland
and the "Triennale di Milano".

Galli certificate of attendance.

your home institution and find out the transfer credit
procedure. Accademia Aldo Galli provides all relevant
course materials including syllabus, professor profiles,
and official transcript of records in order to facilitate
the transfer of credit and recognition of the course.
Courses that do not reach the minimum number
of confirmed participants may be cancelled.
If a course is cancelled, you will be notified by
telephone or email and will have the option to select
another course or request a full refund of all paid fees.
