The Cry of Pugad Lawin was originally and alternately known as the Cry of Balintawak and this
was the start of the Philippine Revolution against the Spanish Empire. The Cry of Balintawak
occurred on August 26, 1896. The phrase “The Cry” was referred to the Filipino people who can
finally refuse to accept Spanish colonial rule over the Philippine Island. The group of individuals
took their cedulas one by one and tore them apart. That was the start of the Philippine Revolution
against Spanish colonial rule. It marked a symbolic commencement which serve as a declaration
of defiance against the colonialism. It was a precursor to a protracted struggle against the
Spanish colonial forces that eventually led to the Philippine Declaration of Independence on June
12, 1898. This event played a pivotal role in shaping the national identity of the Philippines and a
symbol for eventual triumph over colonial rule. With that being said , Pugad Lawin was not
recognized as a place where the revolution sprouted, due to the lack of evidences and changes of
geographical map and it did existed years after the event and revolution was traditionally held
Balintawak.
