Requirement

In order to operate alternators in parallel,

several conditions MUST be met

The 3 first fundamental conditions are :

* Same Frequency
* Same Voltage
* Same Phase Rotation

Same frequency
Here are two generators that we want to parallel

Gen #1 Gen #2

They are not at the same frequency !

-3-
Same frequency

2 generators in parallel will run at the

same frequency as if they will
mechanically be interlocked
Number of Poles RPM
Frequency = X =Hz
2 60
RPM x p Where….
Frequency = =Hz P =number of magnets in the main rotor
60 =number of pairs of poles

Question !
We have a :
3512 1500 RPM 4 poles
3618 1000 RPM 6 poles

Can we parallel them?????

If Frequency = Number of Poles X RPM
120

Then 3512 Frequency = 4 X 1500 = 50Hz

120

And 3618 Frequency = 6 X 1000 = 50Hz

120

The answer is YES !

They have the same frequency

In fact to parallel multiple generator they
have to have the same phase “shape”

Hz
That is OK with 1 phase but we have more!!

-There are different methods to check
phase rotation :

Using an auxiliary 3 phase motor

With synchronizing lights
Any other commercial device

Be “in phase”

No voltage difference…lights off

Biggest voltage difference…maximum glow
