3 Structure description

3.1 DG hook structure

DG series hook is shown in Fig.1. It mainly consists of bail, bail holder, upper and lower tubular
bodies, hook body, hook rod (shank), and spring etc. The hook bail (1) and bail holder (3) are connected
by bail pin (2). The tubular body (8) and hook body (10) are connected by left-hand thread; a lock block is
used to keep the thread from loosening. The hook body and tubular body can move up and down along the
hook rod (15), there are bronze bushings (5) and (16) in the tubular body and a spring retainer (17) to
minimize wear of the hook rod. There are inner and outer springs installed in the tubular body to lift
(bounce) a stand pipe up after the connection is unscrewed when tripping out. The bearing is thrust roller
bearing.

USER’S MANUAL OF DG SERIES HOOK

The hook body, bail and bail holder are made of special alloy steel. The lower tubular bodies and
hook rod are made of forged special alloy steel, so the hook of the DG series has a high load capacity.
The DG hook is designed and manufactured completely in accordance with API 8C. Upon the
assembly completion, the spring retainer with fluid flow passage divides the chamber in hook body and
tubular body into two parts. When there is machinery oil filled in the tubular body, with the help of
bumper function it can eliminate the axial impact which is produced by hook body moving up and down,
and prevent the rebound vibration and drill pipe thread damage while the drill pipe being unscrewed. And
the oil can lubricate bearing (18), latch device (9) and other parts simultaneously.
There is a safety locating unit in upper tubular body, the safety locating unit consists of 6 springs
installed in the upper end of the tubular body and the locating disc (4) which is held in place by spring
force. The locating disc can slide up and down but cannot rotate. When the unloaded elevator has been
lifted, the locating disc contacts the annulus area of bail holder, with the friction produced in the annulus
area by the spring prevents the hook body from swiveling, so the elevator ’s rotation can be prevented, it is
convenient for operator to operate the elevator. When the string weight is hanging in the elevator the
locating disc disconnects from the bail holder and rotates freely. The hook body can swivel freely, so there
is no possibility to rotate the traveling block.

3.2 Latch device of the hook

The latch unit (9) of the hook is shown in Fig.2. It is composed of locking wheel (9-6), locking wheel
shaft (9-3), detent (9-7), detent shaft (9-1), springs (9-2) and (9-4), and housing (9-5) etc. It can lock the
hook in any one of eight uniform positions, when the handle of the detent shaft is pressed down from the
“STOP” end, the lock wheel is inserted in concave groove of the hook lock to prevent the hook body from
turning; when the handle of the lock wheel shaft ( “OPEN” end) is pressed down, the lock wheel is
disengaged from the concave groove of the hook lock and the hook body can swivel freely.

3.3 Safety pin body of the hook

The safety pin body can be locked by latch unit (refer to Fig.1). When the detent (11) of latch unit of
safety pin body (13) is pressed down by joystick, the safety pin body can be opened, install the swivel bail,
the bail moves to operation position along the inclined area of safety pin body, upon the gravity of bail the
safety pin body resets and locks the bail.

4.2 Operation of the hook

1) Caution: the hook operating temperature should not be lower than -20℃; if it is necessary to
operate at the temperature below, the low temperature performance of the material should be confirmed
and the protection measures should be taken as well.
2) While drilling pull down the handle at STOP end of latch unit by joystick to lock the hook body
for preventing the swivel turning.
3) While tripping pull down the handle at OPEN end of latch unit by joystick to make the hook body
rotate for preventing accident due to wireline twisting.
4) Before hanging the swivel, pull down the detent of safety pin upper part to open the safety pin.
5) After hanging the swivel bail check if the detent is locked properly to prevent the swivel bail
falling off.

4.3 Maintenance of the hook

1) Immediately check the main components (such as hook body and hook opening, subsidiary hook
and bail etc) for abnormal conditions after the hook bears great impacts (such as bumping, drill string free
falling, accident handling etc). and affirm there is no obvious abnormal conditions then it can be put into
use again.
2) Periodically check the lube oil in tubular body, if there is insufficient oil, add timely; if the oil is
polluted, clean the chamber of the hook and replace the oil properly.
3) Periodically check each load bearing position of bail and its holder, hook body. If there is any
crack discovered, stop operation.
4) It is not allowed to gas cut or weld at the hook body, bail, bail holder and tubular body.

5 Lubrication

5.1 Grease lubrication

Grease lubrication is used for locating disc of hook safety locating unit, the safety pin, push rod,
detent etc; grease them with grease gun once a week. The products used are:
NLGI 2 compound lithium base synthesis grease in winter
NLGI 2 lithium base grease in summer

5.2 Oil lubrication

7
USER’S MANUAL OF DG SERIES HOOK

Oil lubrication is used for the bearing, bushings etc in hook tubular body. The oil level should be
checked once every shift. Check if the oil level is within the specified range. The oil should be replaced
once every two months. For new hook or newly repaired hook, replace the oil after 200 hrs operation or
when serious pollution is confirmed. Before add new oil clear out all sediments with resolvent oil. The
hook should be zero loaded and the two oil holes of the hook should be opened at the same time. Add oil
from one hole till the oil reaches to the other hole (oil amount is about 20 liters). The oil used is as
follows:
ISO VG 150 compound gear oil or Mobil SHC629 in winter
ISO VG 150 industrial gear oil or Mobil gear oil 629 in summer

6 Packing, transportation and preservation

6.1 Packing and transportation

Each hook should be transported integrally without packing. When you transport and install it a
crane should be used for lifting. Dragging on ground is not allowed.

6.2 Preservation
For long storage, the hook should be put in a dry and venting place for preventing rust; for storing the
used one, clear out the oil and sediments on hook and tubular. Grease the exposed machined surface with
anti-rust oil before storage.
