Foreword

The rotary table is one of the major components of drilling rig. It is mainly used

to suspend the drill string and drive the drill stem to rotate in operation.

ZP375 rotary table is designed and manufactured according to API 7K

Specification for Drilling and Well Servicing Equipment, it can be matched to drilling

rig with same load rating.

This user ’s manual introduces the technical spec, structural features, operation

and maintenance etc of rotary table in details. So it is important to read this manual

carefully, and operate and maintain the rotary table according to the requirements for

prolonging RT service life, ensuring safety and reliability of well drilling and

improving production efficiency.

We provide “Parts Book” of RT for users. If users need spare parts, please select

and order according to “Parts Book” and tell us the drawing No (Part No.) and name.

There is an serial number on the nameplate of each rotary table, if users order

spare parts or inquire some things, please tell us the model and serial No. of RT.

1 Safety warnings
1.1 The personnel who is in charge of installation, operation and maintenance of
the equipment should be trained and qualified with qualification certificate.
1.2 The major personnel who are engaged in installation, operation and
maintenance of the equipment should be experienced in corresponding installation,
operation and maintenance.
1.3 There should be a chief principal for installation, operation and maintenance,
and persons in charge of each work task should be appointed. Detailed and reliable
safety measures should be taken.
1.4 The personnel who is in charge of the RT installation, operation and servicing
should read this manual carefully before they start to do the work, and install, operate
and service the rotary table according to the requirements of the manual. If you don’t
know the related contents, improper installation, operation or servicing may cause
human injury or the equipment damage sequentially.
1.5 All the equipment should be used strictly in accordance with their operating
rules and relevant safety regulations.

2 Brief introduction

2.1 Purpose and application


The rotary table is one of rotating equipments of drilling rig. Its main purpose is
to rotate or suspend drilling string. The rotary table described in this manual can work
normally at operating temperature no less than -20℃ and match drilling rig with
corresponding load grade (rating).

3 Structure description
The ZP375 rotary table (Fig.1 and Fig.2) mainly consists of turntable device (8),
welded cast-steel rotary base (6), fast shaft assembly (10), latch device (1), master
bushing device (1), top cap (7) and so on. The welded cast-steel base (6) is welded
casting subassembly, assembly welded of cast-steel base and metal structural parts.
The cast-steel base is also used as oil sump for lubricating bevel gear pair and bearing.
The turntable (8-2) is a cast-steel component. Its opening is good to let drilling
tools and casing string go through. In order to rotate the drill string, there are two
machined grooves on the top of the turntable mating to the two bulges on the
master-bushing (9). The lower seat ring (8-5) is bolted (8-7) to the lower part of the
turntable.
The turntable is seated on the main and subsidiary combined bearings (8-3) and
supported through the middle ring of bearings on to the rotary base. The upper part of
middle ring of the combined bearing plays a role as a main bearing and bears the
weight transmitted from the drilling string and casing string, the lower part of middle
ring plays a role as an auxiliary bearing and through the lower seat ring (8-5), installed
on the lower part of drill floor, bearing the run-out from bottom hole. The axial
clearance adjustment of the auxiliary bearing is realized by putting shims (8-6) into
the place between the turntable and lower seat ring.
A pair of bevel gear drives the turntable; and the big gear-rim (8-1) is seated on
the turntable.

The bevel pinion (10-1) is installed in one end of the shaft (10-4); the shaft is
supported on two bearings (10-2), (10-6), which are seated in the bearing housing
(10-3). One of the two bearings is radial short cylindrical roller bearing, the other is
radial spherical roller bearing. The flange (10-7) and duplex chain sprockets (10-8) are
installed on the other end of the shaft. They together form the fast shaft assembly.
The meshing clearance adjustment of a bevel- gear- pair is realized by adjusting
the shims (8-4) below the middle ring of the main and auxiliary combined bearing and
the shims (10-5) on flange of the bearing housing.
The latch device (1) is installed on the top of the rotary table to lock the turntable
against left and right rotation. To lock the turntable, one of left and right pawls (1-1) is
sent by the joystick (1-2) into one of the 28 grooves of the turntable.
The master bushing (9) is constructed in two halves. The top two bulges are put
into the machined grooves in the turntable. The master bushing is removed from the
turntable by lifting two bails on the bushing.

4 Operation and maintenance

4.1 Checking before drilling:


1) Check the position of the joystick (lever) on latch device, it shall not be in lock
position before the rotary table start to work. Because a locked rotary table
may cause a severe damage inside the rotary table when it starts working.
2) Check all locking blocks and pins used for fixing the turntable and master
bushing. They shall be lubricated and move freely.
3) Check oil level in the oil sump of rotary base, the oil level should be at the top
mark on the dipstick
4) Check the performance of the oil seal with spring on pinion shaft for
reliability.
5) Check the mesh condition of bevel gears while the rotary table being rotated; it
should be good without abnormal sound, block and impact conditions.

6) Check the temperature of oil sump and all bearings for normal conditions.
7) Check if there is any offset with the flange. Tighten the shaft end clamping
plate with bolts if any.

4.2 Operation
4.2.1 When the rotary table is bearing the max. load, the ambient temperature
should be above -20℃. If it has to be operated below that temperature, the low
temperature property of material shall be confirmed at first, and protective measures
should be taken.
4.2.2 Cautions: when the rotary table is turning, do not lock the latch device.
Only when the rotary table has been stopped, can the latch device be locked.
4.2.3 When the rotary table is operating, the lube oil level in the oil sump of
rotary base should be between the two marks of oil dipstick. When the oil level is
below the lowest mark, it means lube is not enough; when the oil level is above the
highest mark, it means leakage may happen.

4.3 Maintenance
4.3.1 After the rotary table has been impacted by a rather heavy load (such as
collision, drill string free falling or an accident handling etc.), all main components
(such as bearing, gear etc.) should be inspected at once. The rotary table can be put
into operation again only no abnormal condition is confirmed.
4.3.2 Check the lube oil in the oil sump of the base periodically, when the oil
level is too low, add oil; when the oil is polluted, clean and replace it with new oil.
4.3.3 Check the load carrying components such as bearing, gear etc. and the main
stressed positions of the base periodically, if serious corrosion or crack is found, stop
operation and modify them.

5 Lubrication

5.1 Oil lubrication


The bevel gear pair and all bearings are lubricated with a splash lubrication system.
Check if the oil level is within the two marks of oil dipstick every shift. Check the

cleanness of oil every week, if the oil is polluted seriously, replace it at once. In
normal condition, replace lube oil every two months. If new or repaired RT has been
operated for 200 hours or the oil is confirmed of being polluted seriously, replace it. In
oil replacement, drain the dirty oil, clean all sediments with cleanser and refill new oil.
Oil brand is as follows:
ISO VG 150 synthesized gear oil, in winter.
ISO VG 150 industrial gear oil, in summer (10℃~+40℃).

5.2 Grease lubrication


Grease lubrication is adopted for pins on latch device, grease is injected with
grease gun once every week.
Grease brand is as follows:
NLGI 2 compound lithium base synthesized grease, in winter.
NLGI 2 lithium base grease, in summer.

6 Inspection and servicing

6.1 Disassembling
6.1.1 Before dismantling, empty lube oil from the oil sump of rotary base. Oil
being drained, put the RT on the stand flatly, unscrew the oil plug screw under the
base to drain oil.
6.1.2 Dismantle the connecting bolts between the bearing carrier of input shaft
assembly and base first, and remove the input shaft assembly from base.
6.1.3 Dismantle the upper cover, bushing, master bushing and turntable assembly
one by one.
6.1.4 Check the lower race ring of main bearing for its working condition, if it is
good, do not dismantle it; if it has some fault, dismantle it to replace.
6.1.5 After the input shaft assembly is dismantled, check its bearings and other
components; if they are in good condition, no need to dismantle; if not, dismantle
them to replace.

6.2 Inspection
After the disassembled components are cleaned, inspect all the components
completely, do magnetic particle inspection for the main bearing race way and the
surface of rolling element; do penetration inspection for the bevel gear to make sure
components are in good condition. Repair or replace damaged components.

6.3 Assembling after inspection

6.3.1 Input shaft assembling

Upon installation, all fitting surfaces of bearings, all fitting surfaces between
shaft and bearing carrier should be cleaned and coated with clean lube oil.
The inner ring of the roller bearing near to driving bevel gear should be heated in
an oil bath, the heating temperatures should be controlled between 65℃~95℃.
The driving bevel gear should also be heated in an oil bath for easy fitting, the
temperatures are between 260℃-300°C.

6.3.2 Turntable device

The big gear-rim should be heated in an oil bath for easy fitting, at a temperature
between 150 ℃ ~200 ℃ . Its end face must rest tightly on the shoulder-face of the
turntable, and the contacting degree inspection is as follows: insert a feeler gauge of
0.1mm thickness in radial direction, its inserting depth should be no more than 1/4 of
fitting length in radial direction.
The upper race way of the main and auxiliary combined bearings should also be
heated in an oil bath at a temperature between 150℃~175℃. Its end face must tightly
rest on the shoulder-face of the turntable, and the contacting degree inspection is as
follows: insert a feeler gauge of 0.05mm thickness in radial direction, its inserting
depth should be no more than 1/4 of fitting length in radial direction.
The adjustment of axial clearance of the main and auxiliary combined bearings of
turntable is realized by adding shims. The adjustment is as follows: install the main and
auxiliary bearings together with lower seat ring in the turntable, tighten all bolts without

shims until the bearings have no clearance. Measure clearance between the turntable
and lower seat ring with feeler gauge; the total thickness of shims required is the
measurement plus 0.05mm.
Due to difficulty to adjust the turntable bearing clearance it may be adjusted from
0.0mm to 0.05mm with a slight interference (redundance) , but not exceed 0.05mm
clearance. After the clearance is adjusted to requirement, the bolts should be tightened
with a torque wrench to 690 N.m (500ft·lbf).

6.3.3 Installation of rotary table

Before the input shaft assembly is installed in the rotary base, clean thoroughly all
fitting surfaces between rotary base and bearing carrier (pinion cartridge) and coat with
clean lube.
After the input shaft assembly is installed into the rotary base, in order to
determine the axial position for the input shaft assembly, the distance from the bevel
gear end-face to the center of rotary table should be adjusted by shims on bearing carrier
(pinion cartridge) flange.
Before installing the turntable device into rotary base, clean thoroughly all fitting
surfaces between rotary base and main and auxiliary bearings and turntable, and coat
with clean lube. Install shims with a theoretical thickness of 3mm first. Hold the
turntable tightly and rotate the input shaft to check the meshing clearance of the gear
pair. When you check the meshing clearance, check tooth-flank back lash of the gear
pair at a radius of 178mm, it should be within 0.34mm~0.58mm (0.013in.~0.023in.),
otherwise, adjust by adding or removing shims under the turntable to get the correct
tooth flank back lash.
Loosen the turntable, rotate the input shaft to turn the big gear-rim a circle, check
gears meshing at the four quarters of gear-rim, the meshing surface should be no less
than 50% along tooth length and height.
Finally, tighten the nuts on bolts with torque wrench, the max. torque is 690 N.m.

6.3.4 Fill oil into oil sump of the base till the oil level is up to the top mark of oil
dipstick.

7 Package, transportation and preservation

7.1 Package and transportation


The rotary table should be transported or shipped separately and integrally in nude.
The rotary table must be lifted on all four lower corners when you lift it. Dragging it
on the ground directly is prohibited.

7.2 Preservation
When the rotary table needs to be stored for a long time, put it in a dry and
ventilating position indoors; if it is put outdoors, put it on a flat ground without
accumulating water and cover it with waterproof cloth to prevent it from rust. For
preservation of used RT, coat anti-rust oil on exposed machined surfaces.
