Objective
To provide customers top drive inspection guidelines and acceptance criteria to maintain serviceability
of the mainshaft due to load collar wear and internal diameter wear of the bore.

Issue
The mainshaft transmits torque from the drilling motors to the drill pipe. It is also responsible for
supporting the load of the drilling string while drilling, and therefore is a critical load path item.

Solution
The information presented in this bulletin provides top drive customers with inspection guidelines and
acceptance criteria for the mainshaft for all top drive models noted in the effectivity section above. This
inspection should be performed in conjunction with existing maintenance inspections as specified in the
NOV Service Manual. The inspection should be performed annually, but could occur more frequently
based on environment, load cycles, regulatory requirements, operating time, testing, or repairs.

The criteria are based upon industry standards and from API specifications and procedures. Inspection
of the mainshaft should be completed following API Recommended Practice 8B. Additionally, API thread
inspection should be based on API Recommended Practice 7G-2.

Dimensional inspection criteria are provided for the following:

 Critical areas of the mainshaft Stress Relief Groove (SRG) and wall thickness at SRG due to bore
wear are shown in Figure 1, Figure 2, Figure 3, and Table 1 below.
 IDS and TDS mainshaft grooves are shown in Figure 4 and Table 2.
 IDS and TDS split load collar teeth are shown in Figure 5.
 TDX mainshaft load collar groove is shown in Figure 6.
 HPS mainshaft split collar grooves are shown in Figure 7.
 HPS split collar teeth are shown in Figure 8

If evidence of metal transfer is found from the load collar to the mainshaft, contact NOV Aftermarket.
