Actinomycetes bovis

Presentation by :- Prathamesh Ajay Ranawade

Introduction

Actinomycetes bovis was first

described in 1877 by Bollinger and
Harz, when they isolated the
causative agent of lumpy jaw from a
cow.
1) Exogenous Theory
2) Endogenous Theory
General Characters

Anaerobic, Non motile, gram

positive, non spore forming, non
acid fast, branching filament
Causative Agent

Causative agent of Lumpy

Jaw in cattle’s.
And Oral, Gastrointestinal
tract infection in humans.
MODE OF TRANSMISSION

Enter through
Subcutaneous soft tissue.
Female genital tract.
And also by normal flora of
Nasopharnygeal.
Salient Features
Causes Granulomas, Abscesses, Skin lesion and
bronchopneumonia in humans.
PATHOGENESIS
After being associated with particular locality or
01 area organism invades the tissue and there is
reduction in oxygen tension.

There is production of toxin that leads to

02 actinomycosis and once the mucosal barrier is

broken intense inflammatory response is generated
which forms hard yellow granules.

03 These granules drain outside through sinus and

results in intense fibrosis of tissue.
SYMPTOMS
Fever.
Weight loss.
Chest pain.
Abdominal
pain.
Pain while
chewing food.
Detection and Diagnosis
1. Microscopic examination.
2. Complete Blood Count.
3. Erythrocyte Sedimentation
Rate.
4. Dental Radiography.
5. CT scan and MRI.
6. Pulmonary Bronchoscopy.
7. Tissue biopsy.
8. VATS.
Treatment
Antibiotics like Penicillin G, beta
lactum, amoxicillin and
cephalosporin.
Macrolides like erythromycin,
clarithromycin and azithromycin.
Sodium iodide.
