CE INST 1 | CLIMATE CHANGE AND DISASTER RISK
MANAGEMENT

PRELIMINARY ACTIVITY

1. Climate change in the Philippines is a pressing issue that necessitates immediate attention. Rising
temperatures, increased frequency of extreme weather events, and rising sea levels pose significant
threats to the country's ecosystems, economy, and people's well-being. It is crucial for the
Philippines to prioritize proactive measures such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions,
implementing sustainable practices, and adapting to the changing climate to mitigate the impacts
of climate change and secure a sustainable future.

2. Social vulnerability is important in reducing the impacts of climate change on vulnerable

communities. It involves addressing factors like poverty, lack of resources, and inadequate
infrastructure. To address social vulnerability, we can enhance resilience, ensure equitable access
to resources, empower local communities, promote sustainable livelihoods, and increase education
and awareness about climate change. By reducing vulnerability, we can help communities adapt
and mitigate climate change impacts
.
3. Illegal logging in the Philippines has detrimental effects. It contributes to deforestation, loss of
biodiversity, soil erosion, and landslides. It also disrupts local livelihoods and indigenous
communities that depend on forests for their sustenance. Additionally, illegal logging worsen
climate change by releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and reducing the capacity of forests
to act as carbon sinks. It is crucial to combat illegal logging through strict law enforcement,
community engagement, and sustainable forest management practices to conserve the country's
forests and protect its ecosystems.

4. Climate change disproportionately affects the poor, worsening existing inequalities and making it
harder for them to escape poverty. Effects include increased food insecurity, water scarcity,
displacement, health risks, economic vulnerability, and limited adaptive capacity. Addressing this
issue requires reducing emissions, supporting adaptation measures, improving access to education
and healthcare, and promoting sustainable development.

5. To ensure the future of humanity, a shift in our thinking and actions is necessary. The existing
policies, which are outdated and ineffective in addressing the challenges of disaster risk, poverty,
gender, and climate change, need to be replaced. We require new, comprehensive, and integrated
policies that are proactive and innovative in tackling these issues and securing a sustainable future
for humanity.
