Example of Motor Re-Acceleration Logic
Example of Motor Re-Acceleration Logic
Here is the attached logic for motor reacceleration. In complex refinery process, the reacceleration logic in motor feeders are
provided in order to restart critical motors after restoration of power supply in sequential manner. Input related to the list of motor
feeders in which reacceleration facility is required & required time delay before which motors should be restarted after power supply
goes dead, i.e. occurrence of undervoltage in system (here this timer is ON delay timer T2) is given by process team.
Generally, reacceleration scheme in motor feeders are provided in switchgear having following configurations:
1. 1 I/C (NC) (normal supply) + 1 I/C (NO) (emergency supply with auto closing facility).
2. 2 I/C (NC) (normal supply) + 1 B/C (NO) with auto closing facility.
3. 2 I/C (NC) (normal supply) + 1 I/C (NO) (emergency supply with auto closing facility) + 1 B/C (NO) having auto closing
facility.
In attached logic, process flow is as follows:
Description of the sequence:
2. In stage-2 it is assumed that, system is suffered from undervoltage (i.e. undervoltage picked-up).
3. In stage-3 due to persistent undervoltage timer T1 elapsed and undervoltage protection trip command is provided to circuit
breaker. The value of T1 is set higher than the farthest end relay’s fault clearing time (i.e. network’s relay coordniation time).
Undervoltage time coordination start from this point when undervoltage persist in the system even after farthest end relay’s
fault clearing time.
4. In stage-4A, the undervoltage is restored before allowable time duration of motor reacceleration (Timer T2). After restoration
of power supply, the reacceleration close command shall be provided by relay with following conditional checks of system
healthiness:
1. Bus Voltage >80%
2. No Protection Trip
3. Spring Charged (Not applicable to Contactor Feeder)
4. Trip Circuit Healthy
5. Breaker in Service + OFF
FLOW CHART OF SEQUENCE OF OPERATION (STAGE-WISE):
4A. VOLTAGE RESTORED BEFORE TIMER T2 ELAPSED 4B-1. VOLTAGE NOT RESTORED BEFORE TIMER T2 ELAPSED
5. In stage-4B-1, the undervoltage is assumed not to be restored even after elapsing timer T2. This make reacceleration logic
disability and reacceleration close command won’t be provided by relay even after restoration of power supply.
6. In stage-4B-2, it is shown that, voltage is restored after timer T2 elapsed. Here we can observe that even voltage is restored,
the reacceleration close command won’t be provided by relay.
