plants while on vacation
It’s that time of the year when all you want is to get into vacation mode and leave your
responsibilities behind! But before you go, make sure that your plant babies are accounted for
as you’ve taken such good care of them and would hate to see them withering away when you
return. We all know that a lot of time, energy and effort goes into growing beautiful and healthy
houseplants so we must ensure that they do not suffer even when you are on vacation. Being
away for a week or more will necessitate the implementation of some systems to ensure the
health and long-term survival of your plants while you are away.
Even if you don’t have a dependable friend or neighbour to take care of water while you’re away,
there are several ways to ensure that your leafy companions are thriving when you get back
home. We’ve put together a list of five simple hacks for keeping your balcony plants alive while
you’re away.

Water the Plants Before Leaving

The day before you leave for your trip, gather
up all of your houseplants, remove any dead
leaves or flowers, and give them a good, thor-
ough soaking, draining all excess water from
their saucers. Water the plants right before
you leave. Keep all indoor and outdoor potted
plants in a cool, shady location away from
direct sunlight so that the water doesn’t evapo-
rate too quickly in the presence of too much
light and the soil stays moist for longer. Keep
all of the plants in one place so your friend,
who will be in charge of watering them while
you are gone, doesn’t forget to water them.

 Watering Options
Keep a small tray or plate of pebbles filled with
water beneath each potted plant, this will help the
plants stay hydrated for a long time. You can also
set up your own sprinkler system by suspending
small earthen pots with holes in it, slightly above
the plants. Choose the pot depending on the size
of each plant, fill them to the brim and leave it. It
will water your plants drop- by-drop for a while.
Or maybe purchase self-watering devices before
you head for the holidays.

Move Plants To A Shady Area

Plants in direct sunlight will dry out faster than
those in indirect sunlight. To limit the amount
they dry out, move them off window-sills and out
of south-facing rooms. This doesn’t apply to your
general cacti, but handy for many in your collec-
tion. By moving your plants a few feet away from
the window, it will make a huge difference in the
amount of light they are getting throughout the
day. And since you won’t be home to move plants
if there is a particularly hot day, it’s best to move
the plants so they don’t get burned, too.

Use a Wick
Take a container full of water, a cotton rope or a
natural fibre rope. One side of the rope should be
buried in 2 to 3 inches of the well-watered soil,
while the other side should touch the base of the
water container. The cotton rope functions as a
wick which continuously absorbs water from the
container and transfers it into the soil. This is one
of the best ways to maintain a good moisture level
within the soil for a period of 1-3 weeks. Note that
multiple wicks can be used for multiple plants.

Plastic Bag Greenhouse

This method seems unconventional, but it works
wells for longer vacations. Using the largest clear
plastic bag you can get your hands on, place a
towel inside to protect the bottom, and then rest
your plants on top of it. Gather the top of the bag
and use either a vacuum in reverse or blow manu-
ally into the bag to inflate it as you don’t want the
leaves to touch the plastic. Seal the bag tightly
using a zip tie so that condensation takes place.
This mini greenhouse will capture the water as it
evaporates.
